Dangit to all h3!! I love my apple, but its time to get it on. Do they have Vitual Mac? It will be faster to run OS X on a PC at this rate!! Just kidding, but seriously I really wish we were past this 1 Ghz thing. Not meaning to complain (which is what I am doing), but don't you guys feel we can do/deserve better?

    Jesus, that's fast.

I'm on a 1.8ghz P4 right now and the thing is fast as greased shit.

    3.0ghz

a 1.8 p4 is only slightly better than a 1 gig p3, so a 1gig G4 would certainly outperform it. so we really aren't that far behind, guys, but we definitely need some improvements.

Yeah my PC at work is a 1.0 and it smokes about at fast as NT 4. will go. I can't imagine a 3 ghz..just in time for Christmas! What a nasty gaming machine that will make.

We do have better. I don't get woozy over megahertz because I've followed the design of the P4 for sometime now. Here comes the obligatory Car Analogy.

The P4 is like a Honda Vtec Engine. On paper you see a 4 banger cranking out 240HP and you're amazed until you drive while and realize that the full power isn't derived until you've hit 7-8k RPM. Now drive a car that hit's it's peak HP at 6000rpm and you tell me which one if the funner one to drive.

The P4 was designed to clock extremely high and then make up for the low IPC by requiring high bandwidth memory...hence it does better with RDRAM. It's a design tradeoff but clocks like a throroughbred and I won't doubt that at 3Ghz it's fast but nowhere near as fast as even a 2Ghz PPC would be.

I'm curious to see where Apple goes with the next gen HW it'll be exciting.

Your saying a 1gig G4 will outperform what?? A 3Ghz pentium...I think we will have to wait for some benchmarks before any comment like that can be made. Don't you? Unless I misunderstood you..which is possible

    yeah sorry for the ambigiouty. i meant a 1gig g4 would certainly outperform a 1.8gig P4 since a 1gig P3 can keep up with a 1.8p4.

    maybe that made sense. heh.

To get the fastest G4 to keep up with/beat the midrange P4 takes some very carefully chosen tasks. RC5, maybe a few Photoshop filters.

Why does anyone need a 3GHz machine to look at porn? In that instance, isn't slower better?

    Chicks seem to think so.

Playing those fullscreen DivX porn clips gets taxing on the CPU. So I've heard.

I just built myself a new PC last week with a 2.26 Ghz (my G4 400 will be getting the 1Ghz upgrade card in 2 months...woohoo!) and I can't imagine running a 3 Ghz machine.

Besides, a 2.26 Ghz plays those DivX files just fine

(edit: been so long since I last posted I forgot how to spell)

Yes and its so frustrating when you find membership site cracks that only have .asf files and some don't work very well in quicktime even with all the codecs

Let's see. I am typing this on a 900 PIII and have a 1.7 PIV right to the left. The 1.7 is much quicker. I repeat, much quicker.

Exactly... I want Steve Jobbs to stop showing G4 beating PCs in Photoshop and start comparing full screen PORN!

Put the SEX in OS X!

Before you all start crapping your pants (over a yet to be released processor), lets just see what Ol'Stevie has in store for us this fall. It might not be bad at all, not at all. In fact I think it will be quite good.

However, if all we get from Apple is 1.2 GHz with 133 MHz DDR hack (a la xserve), then I'm going to need a new pair of pants. But I doubt it!

Be cool. It's not over before the fat lady sings

Wew thank God for 3 Gigahertz PC's. I'm sure to appreciate the lighting fast Windows Product Activation or the speed at which Digital Rights Authentication takes place so I can listen to my music. Hooray!

The P4 performance issue is true. It is very dependent on the software that is running- it could be very, very good or very, very bad.

For heavy duty CAD, I have observed a 2.2 Ghz Xeon P4 performing along the lines of a 1 Ghz PIII. When performing a task that required heavy sequential recalculation of CAD geometry + ripping a video to plain jain AVI (essentially ripping a 3D animation to video), I observed a 1.7 GHz Xeon P4 peforming at a shocking level of a 700 Mhz PIII!

So in the case of CAD operations, this 3 GHz announcement only means the P4 is just now beginning to significantly move ahead in performance from where it left off with the last PIII iteration.

Naturally, if you are running optimized applications such as playing Quake III or ripping MPEG2/4, things are quite fast on a P4. ...But then the same can be said for the latest G4's when you are running "favored" applications on them.

personally i dont see the need for any CPU over 1ghz. now that all 2d and 3d aplications are being moved completely to the Video card, what do you need a fast cpu for? only thing i would need a faster cpu for is to punch out them SETI units faster.

persoanlly id rather have an increased bus to around 200mhz (400mhz ddr), along with a current geforce4 TI or a new ATI 9700, and all the little extra goodies like usb 2, firewire 2, bluetooth, 802.11g, serial ata HD's, 5.1 surround sound, 8x AGP, and dual Gigabit Ethernet.

if apple could supply me with these things i would be very happy at staying at 1ghz for the next few years.

Hehe, I do. If you've ever done fairly complex layouts in Illustrator 10, you'll know what I mean
