I have milked my 4s for everything it's worth and it's still going strong. I don't like big phones. A 4 inch phone with up to date specs is the next phone for me.

Oh gosh. Having read several articles today on the stunning S7 Edge, I feel absolutely agitated by Apple's itsy bitsy nonsense. I've been a long time Apple user, and I sure hope the competition will finally rattle the complacency of what's become an old boy's club (I still cannot unshake the image of Eddy Cue groovin' to Beats 1). Years of following each and every product announcement and WWDC in sweet anticipation, just to be sorely let down by incremental tripe and dizzying trade-offs in lieu of device thinness. Please, snap out of it Apple. Surprise us in 2016.
Stunning as in stunning iPhone clone? You do realize Samesung makes more than one phone with a smaller screen than the S7 right? I don't understand why people get so butthurt if Apple releases a small phone. Who cares. People have different tastes.

That's guaranteed to happen to some extent.

Sad how this is what Apple has become... a cash machine.

What happened to liberal arts meets technology and changing the world?

I know plenty of people who are still holding on bigger iPhone. If they haven't changed their mind yet, I could see SE will have big potential. I believe not everyone likes the big form factor, some really do prefer smaller size, especially those who don't spend their time playing iOS games, but prefer to use for it for just social media, calling and texting.

Why can't they put out a smaller phone with current specs?  I'd buy this phone, but I'm put off by the old specs.  I'd even pay current 6s prices for it.  I want the smaller phone, but old specs is a rip.

Yes it has, many commenters have been over this :

Early reviews peg Samsung's Galaxy S7 as a serious contender for best smartphone - iPhone Discussions on AppleInsider Forums

Our credit card is at the ready. My wife's old iPhone 5c has had better days and she doesn't want a "big" phone like my iPhone 6.

Huge market out there for those that want the smaller form factor.

I just hope they don't neuter it with sub 6s specs.
Even were it "neutered" to some extent it would still blow away the 5c performance by leaps and bounds, which would be the actual point would it not?
Ain't that the truth. The 5c was running with 4s guts... If Apple puts 6s guts behind a 4" screen the phone may just jump out of its case with so much power!

Stunning in an emperor-has-no-clothes way, yes.
I wonder what's informing your opinion. Have you actually seen it or read about it?
The S7 in intended just for clueless idiots, you will love it, I'm sure. Especially since it cannot run full out for more then about 30 seconds before over-heating and dialing back on clock speed. The next thing to fag out will be the battery, so no danger of burning your fingers on Samsung's latest "shiny."

    Disappointing how?

I have the 5s, I bought it a month after they released the 6, upgrading from the 4, because I didn't want a bigger phone. It's a fantastic phone, and if there wasn't the prospect of a new 4" iPhone with Pay coming out in a couple of weeks, I'd be planning to keep it as long as it takes, and would likely pay to repair what I consider a warranty issue that Apple won't acknowledge. It's perhaps the best iPhone I've ever had.
But my wife does not have the 5S, she has the 5C.

    Totally different.
Sorry. I must have seen 3GS, 4S, and just extrapolated the 5s. That said, my girlfriend has the 5c, and is perfectly happy with it, has been since the beginning. In fact the LCD screen just went out after a drop, and she paid $100 to replace it, even with the new 4" coming. Depending on what the new phone offers, she may continue using the 5c until after the 7 is out, unless I get it and we find it does things she may want, especially if Pay takes off this year.

It's basically GS6 with mSD slot and water proof which is not obviously visible. What the hell do you think about a phone with 99.9% the same as its last year version and call it "stunning"? Do people say iPhone 6S look stunning vs iPhone 6?

Also, it bears noting that this thus-far-imaginary four-inch revamp Frankenphone -- even if it actually did contribute $5.5B in a year -- would make up possibly as much as four percent of iPhone sales. Apple made $231B in revenue in 2015, and at least $150B of that was iPhones. There's no figures on how well the iPhone 5s (a four-inch iPhone still sold as new to this very day) is doing, but I'd guess about the same percentage. So you're going to have to explain to me again why Apple has any motivation to do this other than as an experiment.
Apple has the information on sales and knows that there are many 4 inch iPhone users who have not upgraded since the introduction of the larger 6 models or even earlier. I have kept my 5 for three years. The common view, at least on AI, appears to be some don't like the bigger iPhones. I think this new 4 inch iPhone will demonstrate if Apple are looking for further growth or if they are happy to just coast with a relatively minor upgrade of the 5S.
Hope not. If the new smaller phone is inferior in any way to the flagship I won't buy it. Not interested in second best, and a bigger phone shouldn't be better than a smaller one. I have said numerous times that a smaller phone a little thicker can have  the best battery, best screen, and best internals. Apple needs to figure that out or start infuriating its customers.

This new iPhone better not be a table scrap offering for those of us which want a smaller phone, because if it is Apple will start to lose for the first time. It will happen mark my words.

By "totally different" you must mean "slightly different". The 5S and 5C are not "totally different."
Well they're totally different, at least to me.

    The 5s has a 64bit CPU along with a motion co-processor.

It comes with Touch ID, a better camera and doesn't have the cheap plastic case.

Just because they have the same screen size does not make them comparable.

Why would I? "Fandom"? What are you, 11? Dissent doesn't equal fanboy-ism, tool. I don't even like Samsung. All I want is for Apple to pick up the pace. I’ve been a long time Apple user and definitely want to stay that way, but it’s bloody difficult when they keep dropping the ball on updating their products. From iPhones to Macs, the update cycles feel glacial and industrial/product design feels like an afterthought.
Macs have been slower due to Intel taking longer to release newer CPU's.  That being said, what more are you asking?  They're still the best machines out there, best displays, and best quality, fasted SSD performance.. etc...  You want to play high-end video games, go elsewhere.  Otherwise, Apple does what it can with what's out there.  My 4-month old 5K iMac is the best machine I've owned yet.  Period.

iOS devices have been consistently updated every year, and is always the best performing units compared to whatever crap Samsung comes out with.  What more do you expect?  You want Apple to introduce iPhones every 6-months?  Then folks like you will complain that the devices are already obsolete after a few months?
Please. Games? No, what I do want is to run FCPX, After Effects and Nuke without being presented with more beach balls than a sunscreen commercial. You're spending top dollar to get mid-tier results and chassis' stuck in time in 2012. Intel had released the 5th generation processors when Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro last year, which would have allowed eg. 32 GB RAM. Instead, we got a new touchpad. Whoopty do. I’d also love to marry a new MacBook Pro with a 4K (or 5K) monitor. But Apple monitors haven’t seen a refresh in over 5 years. My 2011 iMac (which coincidentally was awesome for the occasional game on Bootcamp) needs a replacement , but I just can't get myself to spend 5K on a 5K iMac just to future-prove a glorious display with a laptop in its hump. Shall we talk about the Mac Pro? Or the Mac mini? Catch my drift now? Keep your periods to yourself.

I'm not arguing Samsung makes crap. But you have to admit, the S7 Edge is a really good-looking piece of crap. They did manage to iron out certain industrial design flaws *cough* *camera bump* and give it a punch. No, I expect Apple to retain its annual refresh cycle and to either drop the yawn-worthy "S" revisions, or make a better job at ironing out the sore spots.

The only thing that's making me want to complain right now is your sanctimonious tone, really.

This is the danger of relying on a single vendor to provide everything: the software platform and the hardware.

Basically... if Apple doesn't make it... you can't have it.  That's a horrible way to live (or to run a business on)

Hopefully Apple will have some good news for you soon.
