The issue is NOT ApplePay. The issue is that Walmart does not want to pay the 2 to 3.5 percent fees that Walmart and any other store has to pay to the banks if they allow bank credit cards to be used.
If that were true, why do they accept credit cards?
Walmart is doing this to try and save 2% to 3% on CC transaction. They are trying to cut CC out of their business so they can make a little extra profits for the Walmart family.
DING DING DING! We have a winner! They don't care what their customers want. They just are looking out for those small single digit percentages that add up to a lot of money when you process as many transactions as they do in a day.
First I do not shop at WalMart so I do not care what they do.
I will tell you have to deal with the Chip & Pin in Canada and now in the US, the entire process sucks really bad next to Apple Pay.
Apple Pay is another shining example of How Apple gets it right and everyone else has not clue. The Entire chip and pin process is slow and cumbersome. There is so many steps in the process that it is easy to screw it up. Especially at a restaurant, they have to bring the machine to your table, then they have to punch in the information about your charge, then you have to slide in your card , answer questions, then decide how to do the tip, most have defaults for 10%, 15% or 20% or you can enter your own amount. Any place they allows Apple Pay it so much easier. Whole thing at WalMart is just going to take extra steps which people will screw up.
I can not believe there were people on here from the UK and elsewhere talking about how much better chip and pin was. As a person who used card swipe, chip and pin and Apple pay, chip and pin is at the bottom of the list of easy of use. The simple fact you have to unlock your phone, then find the WalMart app, then navigate to the correct place in the app to read the code, then go through what ever security steps to authorize the payment this is going to turn into a nightmare.

To butcher the immortal words of John Adams as it relates to chip and PIN, - My Bank has contrived for me the most ludicrous payment method that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived.
Is "need to open Walmart app and scan QR code" the best you could do to contrast the two mobile payment systems? How about the biggest difference: Walmart requires ACCESS TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT!
I am not so sure The text states that Visa/Mastercard/Discover cards are accepted. There is no need to access your bank account for a Visa payment.
Yes, it'll continue working with CCs because otherwise Walmart would be out of business in a heartbeat. In that usage scenario, I think either you present the CC separately - using Walmart Pay only as a tracker/coupon provider - or you add it to your Walmart Pay account - in which case your CC info is stored on Walmart servers and ready to be hacked by anyone and their grandmothers (see Target & Home Depot about the safety of doing that).
But Walmart's real aim is to get your bank account #. They will even offer incentives - 1% off? - anything to get the customer started using that instead of the CCs.
Unfortunately I live in an area where Wal-Mart dominates. They are about the only game in town. I have tried to use Walmart pay 4 times and have only been successful once. Most of the cashiers do not even understand how it works. I hope it fails soon and they allow apple pay.
That's right. And that's exactly why Walmart Pay will likely succeed even moreso than Pay would. Unlike the many places that accept Pay, every cashier at Walmart will be trained to use Walmart Pay. So, even though it's more complicated, the cashiers will be trained to make it painless. They will also be trained to make sure each and every customer with a smart phone is asked to sign up for it. Likely there will be other incentives offered once the bugs are worked out.
Walmart is the only game in many towns for products and services, rich or poor. Everybody shops at Walmart. It's amazing that virtually every post here echoes some kind of bigoted stereotype, not to mention clueless analysis of the situation by the members of this blog (lots of valuable insight there for tempering my reading of future posts by many of these people). For better or worse, Walmart has huge market share, and this move makes perfect sense for them.
What a load of garbage. HEB in Texas is trying some app similar to this. Surely that one is failing. I don't shop at Wal-Mart anyway. Their stores are depressing. Costco all the way for me. I find Apple Pay most available at fast casual restaurants.

Mmm ... I suspect that Walmart will offer their customers incentives to use WalPay -- additional discounts and/or rewards.
Give Walmart Pay less than a year and there will be a big security breach
You don't have to wait that long, CurrentC (the technology behind Walmart Pay) already had a data breach on October 29, 2014. Walmart has suffered data breaches in thof past too. Many of the other backers of the CurrentC technology, such as Best Buy, Dunkin Dounuts, Kohl's, and Rite Aid, just to name a few, have long since stopped backing CurrentC and now (or soon will) support Apple Pay and Android Pay.
"More than twenty million customers actively use the Walmart app each month and it ranks among the top three retail apps in the Google and Apple app stores."
They don't need ApplePay at this point. And just imagine all the data they already receive before the program is rolled out nationwide. For them, this is huge despite all the Apple/iPhone-loving naysayers. The vast majority of their current shoppers are not iPhone users. It's really no more time than a typical user would spend waiting to be rung up as they check their phone right now. Eventually they'll incorporate loyalty and discount programs and may even come to ApplePay if it's viable for them.

Unfortunately, most cashiers don't understand how Apple Pay or Android Pay works either, or if their store even supports it. I've used Apple Pay at lots of smaller shops that had no clue what it was, how it worked or it they supported it. They were thrilled when I showed them.
There is a reason why people around the world hate Apple products. It's not the product, it's the people that own them. Simply re-read this thread of Walmart hating, poor bashing comments. Elitist... I own 3 iPad mini, iPad Air 2, 2 iPhone 6 and 2 Apple TV. I shop at Walmart and I use their app once a week. I make less that $40,000 a year. You people need a reality check.
Walmart US had sales of nearly $300 Billion last year. That's a lot of losers. In many places, it is the only option. You may hold up your nose at Walmart, but tons of people love Walmart. They are a behemoth and it is the largest retailer in every sense of the word (sales, profits, etc) in many areas.

The drug-dealers aren't smart enough to use an iPhone, and the others pawn their androids to buy drugs.
Or so I've heard.
