Hacked? What do you think? They'd never admit to that but I hear Google was hacked earlier this year - it was very hush hush, of course. Just speculation about Apple.
Some people need to realize that very complex systems will have more downtime/problems than simple ones. NASA spent over $450 million per space shuttle launch yet two entire crews died. But even with this Apple can probably do a better job in keeping their services working -- measure their results against similar competition.
Forestall was fired because Cook didn't want some who was a Threat for taking his job around. At this point is obvious that Cue is kept because he's not a threat.
What evidence is there that Forstall was a threat to be CEO? I don't doubt he may have thought he was worthy but there is zero evidence he was ever under consideration.
Its my own opinion, but Cue hasn't had to sign a public letter accepting responsibility for all the times his services are going down. Lets face it iMaps when it came out was basically somewhere between alpha and beta code but I really don't see where its much better and outside of the US it has a poor reputation. The new maps center in India is plainly far too late - should have been set up two years ago. Why didn't Jony Ive apologize for having a protruding camera on the 6 and 6S. And SIRI is really sorry. Apple really needs to get their software act together fortunately the core of iOS is still as pretty close to how Forestall built it (despite a bad UI redesign by Ive a few years ago. I also think the iPhone SE will be a bright spot for apple this year and save Cook's bacon. Cook's basically a bean counter. They need someone who realizes a smart phone is more just a "pretty" slab. Its the software that brings life to the hardware. They need someone to really drive that and put emphasis on it.
P.S. I wouldn't trust an Apple car for the next ten years considering iMaps and SIRI.
This kind of attitude is why Apple's services are midrate at best.
No. Apple isn't lax because users are patient. Two different things. Systems experience problems. I see two major problems — (1) Apple's status messages are slow to appear and vague, and (2) Users demand 100% perfection from very complex systems.
Slurpy is correct. We will survive. As soon as the systems are fully operational again, it will be life as usual and we will have forgotten all about this. #fact
My company is developing apps for 3rd parties and last year the app store went down during the final acceptance of an app at the premises of my customer. I had to redo the acceptance tests at a later date, costing me a lot of goodwill and approximately 2000 Euros in lost wages and transport.
I really don't understand the attitude of some people here which dismiss the lousy service from Apple as a non issue. They are much less forgiving for Android devices

Indeed...but that won't quell the zero patience 'me me' Trump voting entitlement whores. I must be unique. Owning an indecent amount of heavily used Apple gear and services over the years, I've never suffered the bricking and outages that get the hyperbole treatment on the web. Now if we were talking broadband suppliers, that would be different.

And I wouldn't trust anybody wielding so many reality defying memes in one post. I lived in the village in Norfolk UK that was the very first Google Street View mapped area here. My house had someone else's drive entrance, was referenced against the wrong post code and together with Google Maps showed the wrong access down a track and my house on the edge of a non-existent lake. It improved with user feedback, just like Apple Maps. "Why didn't Jonny I've apologies for having a protruding camera..."? What. The. Fsck. Why don't you apologies for your totally unbalanced viewpoint?
Adding an 'S' to the iPhone interim models is something that Apple has done since the Jobs era. If the author falls at such a low hurdle then I have to wonder what else he got wrong.
Still, as opinion piece it was an interesting collection of words.
Yep. I've only been saying this since forever. Obviously outages can happen but they seem to happen more frequently with Apple these days.
And Forstall was sent packing over Apple Maps, whereas Eddy has problems with all the services, many times a year. Starting to look like a favoritism thing at this point.
Forstall was apparently "grating" against others in Apple's senior (and otherwise) management team, so that had influence in him getting the boot. He was seemingly a good lead software engineer though, and known as a "mini Steve", which is sort of what Apple needs to keep Cook on the straight and nor
Sigh, I think parts of the online store and iTunes are still running WebObjects.
You'd be right. Even though they don't sell it or support it anymore. The iTMS seems to be the most reliable out of all Apple's online services though.
Tim Cook needs to consider replacing Eddy Cue. Here is Cue's bio from the Apple webpage:
"Eddy oversees Apple's industry-leading content stores including the iTunes Store and Apple Music, as well as Apple Pay, Siri, Maps, iAd, Apple's innovative iCloud services, and Apple’s productivity and creativity apps."
Isn't that basically a list of the products Apple has had the most problems with?

From what I've read, Forstall was fired because he didn't do "team" very well. As long as there was Steve as the most massive overriding and unifying ego, he was kept, since he's apparently a truly brilliant engineer. Once Steve was gone, it didn't work anymore.
