Here's some perspective on "The 19th Century plug that's still being used":

Apple is known for evolving technology: "They got rid of DVDs, they got rid of the floppy disk drive; they got rid of parallel ports, they're eventually getting rid of USB. This is how they move,"

Don't like it? There are plenty of other choices out there. Stop complaining.

It's still being used for very good reasons, as are the plugs that deliver mains power to all your appliances.  New does not mean better.  You are right, people who have a use for the 3.5mm jack have plenty of options that will be available from Apple's competitors.   It will be interesting to see what slaes of the iP7 are like.  Perhaps I am wrong and the majority of people won't care and sales will be terrific.

Are you suggesting there has been no evolution of the mains connector?

Even more short-sighted in that comment is that in order to use the appliance I bought in New York, I have to buy an adapter to use it in London.

No, no of course there has been evolution.  A century ago, some English colonial masters tried to bring their horrendous idea of a mains plug to Australia that was about the size and weight of a house brick and which required about 30 newton meters of force to insert and even more to withdraw.  The locals said F*** that for a joke mate, and came up with a more sensible and highly evolved form of plug life.  Since then, nothing.
