I'll be 60 years old next May. I'm not afraid of much, but I do live in fear that the day might come where Macs no longer exist.  It is fairly easy to believe that Apple might choose to kill Macs as a business decision.  I wish Apple would consider a marketing push to get more PC to Mac switchers.  It would also be nice to see more Macs ads.

It's hard to imagine life without a Mac.
Fear not. The Mac is still the primary platform for building iOS apps. There is no XCode for iOS. Unlike Microsoft, Apple has not tried to make an interchangeable desktop/tablet experience. They keep each unique. Apple has always emphasized using the right device for the right moment. Desktops aren't going anywhere.

Apple does not need to encourage switchers anymore. Look around an airport; in the waiting halls or airline lounges, I see at least 50% Macs. Go to a university campus. You'll find over 75% Macs. The new Swift Playgrounds, intended to teach kids (or anyone) Swift is an amazing way to make Swift the dominant language for the next generation.

Mac sales are down for Apple because PC sales are down for everyone. I don't know what % are holding off for updates but it's probably significant. Apple sensibly doesn't update on every CPU/GPU change because the improvements are marginal and the constant redesign would hurt margins and create obsolete inventory. I'm certain that updates are coming but will not ship until the fall because they tend to always ship with the latest OS.

Hard to tell how this will all play out, but my current desktop is a 2009 model iMac. It works at least as well as the day it came out of the box. A family member is running an original all in one white translucent iMac from about 2006. Same story. If you fear the Mac will be disappear, buy a couple and stick them in a closet. I'm not being sarcastic or joking. I really can't see Apple deciding to do to OSX what Microsoft did to WindowsXP by stopping security updates. And the OSX 10.4 my family member is running has had no update in years; I think mostly because it simply doesn't need any.

Personally, I will probably not buy an iMac replacement. For a desktop, I'll go to an HD monitor (that are now inexpensive) and probably a mac laptop in some sort of dock. I am not much younger than you, and I expect such a setup to last me until...well...I don't need a computer.

Well..for now there is no XCode for iOS. For now. But your point is correct.

I am at the University of Washington. I can see the Microsoft corporate campus from my office window. UW has a Computer Science building here donated by Paul Allen (and it is named for him.) It amuses me when I visit that location, because the vast, vast majority of students there are all sporting Macs.

My computing needs are simple, so I don't need the latest anything. I suspect many users are in the same boat. I update/replace when I need to, not a minute before. And As I mentioned, I'm running a 2009 iMac. It works great for what I need. At some point in the future, that will not be true, but until then... I think this is mostly why PC sales are dropping. Most people - perhaps practically all people outside professionals - don't see value for the new, latest anything.

    Apple's iPhone business

    ...
Apple added "millions" of first-time smartphone buyers in the quarter.

Active install base of iPhones is up double digits year over year.

iPhone install base has grown 34 percent year over year in China alone.

    Yeah you missed something.

    What if:
    1) Some Android users fed-up with lack of OS updates getting their first iPhone, the recently launched and affordable SE model.
    2) Fewer current iPhone users upgrading because we're long into the last product cycle with a new one on the horizon.
    3) Still far more Android users churning to their next Android phone to get newer OS.

    and presto!
It is not about the market that I missed something,  It is about mathematics. The Android market share went up, the iOS market share went down, the total market remained roughly equal and yet according to Tim Cook  the number of Android to iOS switchers should be at their highest levels ever.  This is for me mathematically impossible.  Maybe he used Numbers to calculated the switchers, this could be an explanation
Did you miss some important details from the article?  It isn't always about how many sold, but how many stayed.  Have to think long term and Apple is succeeding in that area.  They still attract new users and users tend to stay around once that are on the iOS platform.

I'm on at 2010 MBP 15" which is starting to have serious problems. It still works well enough but has a bad graphics card that cannot be fixed without a motherboard replacement.  BTW my first portable ever was the late lamented 12" Powerbook G4.  I used it for seven years.  I agree that I don't need the lastest thing, but when I do buy, I try to get the fastest and highest capacity I can afford to extend usefulness.  I am intrigued by the idea of the OLED function strip that has been rumored.  I might just have to get one of those if it actually materializes.  Oh I also have a sweet Mac Mini that is my home server for a whole bunch of stuff like automation, weather data processing, AV processing, AV backups, security camera NVR, music server etc.  Can't really do without that little guy at all.
