Reliable sources mix things up, too.
Don't think it's fair you deleting my comment for calling you out on including this line. It's an unjust justification for Ming-Chi Kuo getting things wrong. When he got the thinner MBP in June two years ago wrong not so much as a pip-squeak.

When he gets it right ye shout it from the rooftops—when he's wrong ye excuse and minimise. And Apple Insider isn't the only publication guilty of this regarding this guy. Some of his predictions such as Apple going higher end than Beats didn't even read right at the time. It's like a gambler only recalling his wins. Sooner or later he's no house and is forced to look at his reality. No doubt Kuo has some inside sources, but he gets things wrong and right.
I deleted it because you made a joke implying I was having sex with him. Your post is indefensible -- we don't tolerate that kind of content.

You don't like Kuo, fine. No need to insult the reporters at AppleInsider. Cut it out or leave.
Get out of his bed was meant in the business sense of that term. Apologies if you felt it was a personal attack or a literal reference. We just get fed up when this guy gets a pass when he's wrong. I believe that's the case. It's OK for him to be imperfect. He's often on a few sites not even referred to as an analyst—he is an analyst. Analysts usually have sources. That's their job. If they don't they are a mediocre analyst.
I have to agree. There is a colloquialism called "getting into bed" with someone and often refers to an infatuation with a business or client that results in favoritism. While it may have its basis in a sexual relationship and how that clouds rationale thought, he was definitely not inferring that you are having sex with someone. It is a perfectly good explanation of how some people could see the relationship with a source when there is favoritism that overlooks faults.

Instead of deleting the comment, perhaps you should adddress it and why you ignore those failure. Deleting the comment just confirms that comment further.
There is no word limit to comments here. One-line trolling isn't welcome. Well thought out criticism is fine. Comments that don't meet our guidelines will be deleted and people who continuously violate those rules will be banned. We welcome discussion, but at the end of the day, it'a our house and our rules.

Don't like Kuo? Fine, talk about it. Implying he's paying us off? Not productive.

P.S. I'm glad this article was made. Would be a great tradition since sites and analysts are never called out.

Thanks! That was the overall goal: Identify who is putting their neck out there and reporting rumors well in advance of a product launch, and highlight those who are doing a good job with those reports. The goal here is to offer an accurate assessment of who you can trust, not promote our own editorial decisions. But you can't please everyone.

Wouldn't be surprised if Apple goes uses the same ceramic in the next iPhone as they do in their Watch. This article makes a good case for it:

    https://www.quora.com/What-will-the-iPhone-8-be-made-of/answer/Brian-Roemmele?srid=Pi3
Thanks for the link. That was an excellent read! If they use this material I'll be interested to see how it handles drops and scratching.

Update: lots of conjecture at the bottom of this piece unfortunately. He asserts Lightning becomes a MagSafe connector? So EarPods were given a Lightning connector for just this year? And wired sync and backup and charging will be changed? And not just water resistant but waterproof? Not even their watch designed for swimming is sold as waterproof. Not even the ceramic model. The piece could instead have been concluded with, "I really want one".

Good news -- this is a very easy thing to achieve. It just means not reading rumor sites.
As easy as avoiding water for a month.

Just wanted to vocalize my appreciation of this article. Very intuitive for a rumor publication to tally up a report card at the end of the rumor cycle. Great work AI team! Love to read more in this style.

Here's a patent application that may explain it a little bit better

I've seen no evidence that we're ready for a MagSafe connector 8 or 16-pins with electrical—not optical—data and power.

Not even their watch designed for swimming is sold as waterproof.
Using -resistant v -proof is almost always patently false when it comes to manmade objects.

As far as I'm concerned nobody nailed the A10 chip (outside of it being called A10, not much of a stretch there), the big.LITTLE type configuration was a surprise to everyone.
And NOBODY called the better battery life of any previous iPhones.

I don't know anything about pixels or photoshop, but that smart connector on the back of the iphone looked faker than fake to me.

In addition, there was no logical or even imaginary reason for it to be put on the iPhone at all.

Um… charging. Using a dock has always been and still is cumbersome when you need to use deep plug just to charge. Smart Connector is great on the iPad and would be great for one-handed docking and undocking with considerably less dexterity/attention needed.

Then you have the potential for countless accessors connecting to the Smart Connector without having to use the Lightning port, or require an extra big chin for a Lightning or Micro-USB as a passthrough, like on a powered case, health monitor, etc.

And this is precisely why Apple events are now criticized as boring, disappointing, and meh. The rumor sites pound their chests for getting the scoop but Apple suffers PR damage from the tech press because there is no suspense.
I see the rumors  180° the opposite of you.
First the negative rumours from the so called "investment experts" give me bad feelings on Apple's coming announcement.
But the actual Apple announcement is then even better because it's usually much better than the negative rumours.

The main thing I learn from this is how lousy the "investment experts" are at predicting the market.   :p
So I'm even happier that I make my own investment decisions.   :)

My bet is on the next version being the iPhone 10 for the 10-year anniversary of iPhone.

How did you separate the trash talk from the valid rumours.
    I couldn't ?

My guess is that the iPhone 8 will be made of ceramic, do away with/seamlessly integrate the home button, and adopt a OLED screen. Won't be here until 2018. Will be the standard iPhone 7S upgrade in 2017.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't. Maybe it will arrive for the 7S-series, not until the 8S-series, not until later, or not at all. This depends on many factors lining up.

What factors? Well, a lot more than I'm certain aware, but off the top of my head I'd say that cost and production quantities, and QA, are three major factors that are likely affecting the high-end Apple Watch Series 2 numbers at this moment, Can they refine that process in two years that a $900 price difference for a small case/relatively small amount of material can be brought down to $0 so that the iPhones can maintain their current price points? I don't think it's impossible, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Now, what about Apple offering a special, high-end iPhone made of ceramics that is less prone to cracking, breaking, scratching, or scuffing, and is lighter than aluminium for, say, an extra $500? Well, that might work at a premium option, especially in certain markets, if the ceramic Watch sells well -and- Apple can use economies of scale and expertise to bring down the price from where it stands today.

Nice, thanks. I understand where they're going with all this a lot better now, especially the co-molding process which I hadn't quite grasped before.

My guess is the iPhone 8 will be 1/2 opaque white/black or whatever-colored ceramic co-molded with polymer internal structure with clips/etc to join with the front half, which will be transparent fucking a-loo-meenyum housing the screen.

One of the citations in that post:

Agree wholeheartedly.  Though the "headphone jack removed" and "static home button" rumors led to another rumor that AI kept mentioning quite often in the last year: that the iPhone 7 would be thinner. I hope there will be a little bit of backing off the insistence that the next iPhone must always be thinner. From the 6 to the 6s it got 0.2 mm thicker, from the 6s to the 7 no change. So 2 successive generations of it not getting thinner. Though a bigger battery in the 7, if memory serves, and a bump in battery life as well.

I can think of several reasons to put the Smart Connector on the iPhone. Connecting peripherals, charging, etc. What I couldn't see, and still don't, is why it would be in that position. If they include it on a future iPhone (and I suspect it might be next year, if the 10th anniversary model rumours are true), they will put it either in the same position it has on the iPad (left hand side, on the edge), or they'll put it on the bottom edge (bit tricky with the Lightning connector in the way). They won't put it on the back the way all the fakes showed it.

Besides, if you ask me, it looks more like Calculon than Bender.
