In addition, there was no logical or even imaginary reason for it to be put on the iPhone at all.
Logical: optional changing while listening with bundled headphones.

Imaginary: charing cases, camera cases and gaming controller that don't obscure the charing port and don't have a chin.
While possible uses, Apple doesn't tend to go for the small end of the market that will actually do these things.  While iPad pro users are more likely to use a smart-port keyboard, I don't think iPhone users are as likely to put the phone into more than just a protective case.  Apparently, neither did Apple.

I admit that charging while listening to headphones is a benefit of having a separate port for each, but with so many times you are NOT listening to headphones as an opportunity to charge, it's another gamble Apple appeared willing to take.  I'm not defending it, just pointing out how they may have justified it.  I personally DO this very thing at my desk.

Apple's products tend to be very evolutionary.  I think we won't miss the headphone port in a few more years or iterations.  I would like to see wireless charging, myself.  Possibly on a ceramic phone.

I stop reading all of the rumors at the beginning of summer. By that time there are enough guesses and generalities about the next iPhone to peak my interests. However, to me, knowing the specifics is like knowing what you are going to get for Christmas (or Birthday).  For me, that takes away the surprise and mystique of what Apple has in store for us in at their September event.
