It's a major disappointment. The AirPods should have been available along with iPhone 7.
Agreed 100%. A successful product can still have a botched launch. This does nothing to help transition people from using the headphone jack to wireless. The Lightning headphones can't be used on any other product, as there's not even the hint of a Lightning headphone to 3.5mm adapter, much less a USB-C, or Thunderbolt for using with one's own Mac. That means customers are put in the position of using the 3.5mm adapter with an old set of headphones, or worse yet, buying a new set of 3.5mm equipped headphones, because they don't have an old pair.
How long has Apple known they were ditching the headphone jack? How long have they known a successful transition away from it depended on improving the wireless products available in the current marketplace? This really is inexcusable. One wonders how well the iPhone 7 would be selling following this delay had the Note 7 not been taken off the market tainting the entire Samsung brand along with it.

Absolutely, because all the iPhone7 will have to go for another few months without being able to listen to music.
I can see millions of people storming Apple stores, demanding their money back because Apple didn't think to include some kind of wired headphone set in the box.
With all the research being done indicating a likely correlation between EMF radiation that's being emitted right next to one's head and various brain cancers I think these Bluetooth AirPods are a bad idea. With most people ignoring the dangers of placing their cell phones with their associated RF radition right up to their ear's constantly, Bluetooth will be adding an addition threat to one's health. And please, don't tell me there's no substantial proof of the dangers.
Perhaps you should post some: substantial proof I mean.
I'll say it again ... totally botched the removal of the headphone jack. Essential transition technology should have been ready day one, not a month and half later, and now with no ETA at all ... really inexcusable, especially considering how much time they've known this was going to happen. Probably won't affect sales of the iPhone 7 substantially, but really poor form considering all the other compromises customers who made use of the headphone jack have made since upgrading to the iPhone 7.
um lemme see here, i have iphone 7 (do you?) and the compromises ive had to make thus far -- zero. ive had to make zero compromises. plus i gained a better OIS camera and image processor, longer battery, and water seals. my BT headphones somehow still continue to function, and i use the shipped earpods for routine office meeting calls.

thank you for your completely uninformed, crankpot opinions.

id say about as well as every single iphone launch -- fucking amazingly well.
No loss to me - whoever designed any version of the AirPods didn't wear earrings - totally useless!
Really. Of all the designs they came up with one that makes you look like a total idiot. When I get the money I'm getting some Beats or some other better looking ear buds. Sheesh!!!
This is starting to worry me, I'm seeing more and more cases where the Apple culture seems to be swinging toward the 'deadlines aren't really meaningful' side of the pendulum. Always before, when I ordered something from Apple with an "in the future" delivery date, I could bet money Apple would beat the projected delivery date. Now I'm not so sure, the attitude about deadlines and NLT dates seems to have shifted.

really?what about the white iPhone 4? Rather later than flaw. You can't fix hardware after it shipped.
This announcement is coming very late (a few days before the end of October). Possible reasons are:
1. Apple hasn't manufactured enough for launch because of production challenges.
2. They have encountered a software challenge that is slowing things down.
3. Apple thought they were ready to launch and only recently discovered an issue significant enough that it would trigger a recall if the product were already out.
The way this message rolled out today seems most consistent with the last scenario. Presumably we'll learn more tomorrow. If they had even a small number ready to go (scenario 1 above), Apple likely would have gone forward with the launch anyway. That's certainly what seems to have happened with Apple Watch.
If it is scenarios 3, however, that would suggest that they have no units ready to ship. And that in turn would suggest a high likelihood that this product will not be ready for the holiday season.

What … Wait … Are you sure?
Oh.

give it a rest -- you havent been victimized.
Wonder if the problem lies with Apple or a vendor?
