what about the MAC PRO and the iMac, omg. One of the strong parts of apple always has been the strong interconnectivity between their entire producline. Good luck connecting your brand new iPhone7 to straight to your brand new MPB as well. Steve Jobs passes away more and more, every single new apple keynote. Lack of vision all over the place.
no lack of close friends of Jobs who keep popping out of the woodwork, tho. how long did you know him?

Will this allow a 2015 12" MacBook to connect to a Thunderbolt Display?
No, because the retina MacBook doesn't support Thunderbolt at all.

Does anyone know if I could use this adapter to connect my firewire audio interface (Focusrite Saffire Pro 40) to newer mac?

So, firewire cable -> original TB to FW adapter -> new TB2 to TB3 adapter...?

Seems like FW peripherals are forced into extinction...

updated: It actually only supports OS X Sierra. I am using Mavericks or Yosemite due to compatibility with my programs..
Still wonder if it will hold up FW devices though in Sierra.

true, but he did say display. I can easily buy adapters that allow me to drive an Apple display ( I have a 24 inch and last of the 27 inch TB display)
what I cannot do is provide power to the macbook at the same time. This is unfortunate - it means I can only drive my apple displays for a short time.

    Hey Falcon,

Thanks for the reply. Do you have a link or something? I ask because according to the Apple Specialist I spoke with, it is compatible, but I am somewhat suspect (especially since the product link doesn't mention the 12" MacBook). And as Fred pointed out, the purpose of this adapter would be connecting the 12" MacBook to the Thunderbolt Display, not for any sort of Thunderbolt drive/etc.

Your bigger issue with your use case is that the new hardware, with Thunderbolt 3, only will run Sierra.

Everything about this line up is nickel and diming. I like the new toolbar, I am even comfortable with all usbc, but little else.
Here's another example.  The new MacBook Pros don't include the extension cord that goes between the power brick and the wall socket.

    Power Adapter Extension Cable

    $19.00

This AC extension cord provides extra length for your Apple power adapter, including both the 61W and 87W USB-C Power Adapters for MacBook Pro.

Anyone aware of an article which discusses USB-C and Thunderbolt 3, compatibilities, speeds, backward compatibilities, passive vs. active cabling, etc.?

I'd like to get smart on this and a soup-to-nuts discussion would be helpful.

    Hi Felix,

For what's it's worth - my understanding is that Thunderbolt 3 can support USB C, but not the other way around.

$49 for this adapter is CRAZY.
How much active circuitry is in it?

This adapter is cheap compared to similar Startech and Kanex adapters. It's a steal. I had to buy a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 made by Starteck back in June 2016 for the NUC Skull Canyon to have a secondary Gigabit NIC by daisy-chaining that adapter to the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter. The Starteck Thunderbolt 3 To Thunderbolt adapter I purchased cost $67. Its list price is over $100.

By by the way, if you want a Gigabit NIC on the new MacBook Pros, you will have to daisy-chain two Apple dongles now, which is ridiculous.

I assume this would not work in reverse. Say, if I were to purchase a TB3 device, anticipating that in the future I will own a Mac with TB3 ports, would this adapter allow me to use that device on my current Mac? I'm going to guess probably not.

It should if the device you purchase is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2. You would need a Thunderbolt 2 male-to-male cable for this scenario to be used with this adapter.

I love it how everyone says too expensive, when others are much more and they have no Idea what is inside. Like the airpods OMG too expensive, when all the others are more with less battery.

Always too many knee jerk reactions.

wow...it is encouraging to see so many disappointed apple people on AI (myself being one of them)...microsoft is going after creative professionals a little at a time. will apple continue on the road of indifference of their customers concerns/appeals? microsoft have recently emphasized that they are paying heed to the needs of the creatives out there, they are courting them and turning around with bold, considerate designs aimed at the creative who feel more and more estranged by the long-time love apple. glad i have gotten well acustomed a software solution that is cross platform aside from my Logic DAW of which i have used since 1995. i am more adapt to jump ship when the time is right instead of sinking with it. glad there aren't too many audio unit plug-ins that don't have a vst counterpart...shew!

everybody, get out before you are sucked so far into the ecosystem that they force you to buy an iCar (or idiotCar according to indersider memos obtained by wikileaks)...this rollout is completely embarrasing and anemic, zero fire under the belt. p o o r
apple, you wonder why your numbers are on the slide? lets see: ipad pro WTF...if you can call it "pro", dinky morsels of spec boosts for iphones, taking away more and more connectivity for legacy (or industry schemed obsolescence) devices and mass storage with the afore mentioned nickle and diming BS, having some "who's who" curate playlists for us regular clueless folks to listen to and be enlighted by with the subsequent hope for a doling out of our hard earned cash to support their narcism and maybe they can get a versace applewatch that we are suppose to admire in people magazine?

You just need one of these:

Adapters are a compromise while other manufacturers adopt newer standards. After years of having dozens of different port standards that all transmit some form of data, they have reached the goal of having a single port for everything, just like iOS devices and it's extremely fast. 4x 40Gbps in a laptop.

A lot of things can be done wirelessly now like syncing iPhones, Airdropping and most people are on wifi. Having a single port will ultimately reduce the amount of adapters the more that people move devices to USB C devices.
