17" iMacs? 17" iMacs! Speculate away!

Thinksecret says yes, so what do you think?

I'm thinking 1280x1024, the basic format for a 17" flat panel. After all, there current 17" has these specs.

It would be NICE to see a 4:3 widescreen, though. Maybe the same as the TiBook: 1280x854. Certainly would look different (and I say better) that way.

Finally, as for the insides, I think we are going to see the 1 GHz iMac.

If I had to guess, I'd say:

15" CDROM, 15" Superdrive, 17" Combo, and 17" Superdrive with speeds fromm 800 MHz - 1 GHz.

Sounds reasonable to me. Having two display sizes in a single product line has worked well for the iBook.

Four separate models differentiated by screen size and optical drive would be perfect.

Would these 17" iMacs introduce a 133 MHz bus and GeForce4 MX graphics? I hope so.

c/net says "yes" as well (and no new PowerMacs at MWNY).

The small size of the screen on the iMac (15") is all that's keeping me from considering it. At 17", I think maybe, yes.

I meant 3:2. One day, I'll actually proofread something before I post it.

That would be cool. I hope it's a nice tight resolution too. Here is the c|net article:

Sorry: I didn't read the cnet article, this is the same article, just on MSNBC.

Wow, people are too busy <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002013"; target="_blank">crucifying Apple</a> to make up hare-brained specs?!?!?

    What has AI come to????

Oh, and what if Apple is really putting up a SMOKESCREEN? You know, the could be PLANTING rumors to hide the real dirt, said dirt being G5 Powermacs at up to 2.4 GHz!!!!

It makes perfect sense. Apple seeds the G5 rumors before MWSF, then all the rumor mongers expectations are totally deflated. They don't want to hear anything else about G5s because they got burned so bad. So this time, Apple seeds lots of rumors, ranging from 1.2 GHz G4s to nothing at all for the Powermacs, when in reality, all this time, they've been putting the finishing touches on some bad-ass Powermac G5s with enough memory bandwidth to embarrass an elephant, and enough MHz to make grown men feel proud.

    It's going to happen!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!

d000d!!! Powermac G5s at MWNY or bust!!

17" would be really nice indeed, I would still like my 15" 800Mhz model. But when I think of it I rekon if a 17" model comes out there will be no 15" model, as I am sure they [Apple] can still make a 17" model affordable.

I personally think there will not be a 17" model, but if there is it shall be cool indeed

Damm I have already bought 6 x 15" LCD iMacs, I would have bought the 17" if they had offered them in the first place and Apple could have had the higher revenue. I had a suspecision that they would become available but my PC's were really on the way out and I could not wait, I had no choice. I couldn't wait 2 years which was my estimate of how lonf they would take to appear, particulally as LCD prices were rising shortly after the 15" machines were released.

This is not really a guess, but rather what I would find a good (and reasonable) upgrade to the iMac line:

    Three models:

    800 MHz G4

    133 MHz bus

    256 MB RAM

    40 GB HD

    CD-RW

    15" LCD (1024 x 768)

    GForce 2MX

    1299$ (back to original price)

    800 MHz G4

    133 MHz bus

    256 MB RAM

    40 GB HD

    DVD/CD-RW

    17" LCD (widescreen, 1280 x 854)

    GForce 2MX

    1599$

    1 GHz G4

    133 MHz bus

    256 MB RAM

    60 GB HD

    SuperDrive

    17" LCD (widescreen, 1280 x 854)

    GForce 4MX

    1899$

(ok, maybe the GF4mx is too optimistic, but it would be nice perhaps they could find a way to make it BTO? )

EDIT: I have marked the improvements over the current line with bold

Yes, of course Apple will need to upgrade the Power Macs ASAP if the iMacs are upgraded at MWNY, so they won't cannibalize the PM. Remember when the iMac G4 was launched? The exact same thing happened. No one in their right mind would buy a PM right after the iMac introduction, but a few weeks later the Power Macs was upgraded. I think the same will happen this time. iMac at MWNY, Power Macs in august.
