I just went to YouTube using Safari and found that 4K videos play just fine on my 5k iMac as they always have. What is all the fuss about?
Read the article for comprehension, and don't just skim it. Check the sample videos included, and follow the directions. You'll see that there is a cutoff date where the videos before are fine in 4K and the ones after are not.

Well, it certainly would have been much more helpful if an example link had been provided showing the problem. You only did that INDIRECTLY by referencing Reddit. After reading Reddit, I found the following link which some say is supposed to be 4K but which I have confirmed displays only at a max resolution of 1440p:

Hopefully this link (assuming the uploaded video was in fact 4K) will be helpful for others who visit this forum wondering what the heck is going on.
