There are so many factual errors and made-up sh-it in this thread (case in point - see above).
I remember when XP was in the Beta stages while OS X was just releasing their PB of X. XP (Or Whistler as it was codenamed) looked VERY different.
Here's some samples of what XP was to look like before Aqua became popular and MS decided to "Incorporate" X-like features into their OS. Looks very different.
Basically, after MS realized that people liked flashy GUI's, they decided to make one that was too distracting.
The point here is that if those SS are real, by the time "LongJohn" is released, it will not look the same. No big deal there. I'm a Mac user. I got all I need right here.
Close but no cigar. XP was built on Windows 2000. In fact, prior to its release, some people had called XP w2k sp1. The screenshot you posted are accurate and they are XP on 2000 core w/o the GUI enhancement. In fact, one can make one's XP look exactly like Windows 2000 easily. Every OS maker is constantly enhancing their GUI - just becase one may have been released in beta before the other does not mean Windows is trying to copy OS X!
[This does not mean the Mac GUI is not superior, of course.]

That 'pre-Luna' look was a far better 'evolution' of the Win2K look than what XP ended up with, I have one as a Theme on my XP PC at work.
I really hated the 'in your face blue' the 'Classic 2K' look is applied like a really poor Theme, Windows 2000 itself looks better than XP using the 2000 look.
I think he is trying to say that Windows early betas do not feature the entire new GUI. They wait until late in the development cycle to unveil them.

The various codenames for XP (Whistler, Longhorn, Blackcomb) are all named for one of my favorite ski resort located north of Vancouver. http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/longhorn.asp

Close but no cigar.

Huh? What are you talking about?
Are you arguing that Windows XP wasn't called Whistler?
Or that his pictures aren't really of Whistler?
Or what?
Yes, we all know that XP evolved from 2000. I thought that was as common knowledge as saying Mac OS X is based on NeXTSTEP or FreeBSD.
