One word: Money. (okay more than one word.) Apple makes millions in licensing Lightning cables. Apple isn't usually one to leave money on the table.

The security of a Lightning connection with regard to accidental unplugging is much better than that of a USB-C connection, at least with Apple's Lightning sockets. The Lightning plug snaps into place and takes considerable force to remove; USB-C does not have any sort of latching mechanism, so the connections will become undone much more easily.

"To borrow a phrase from Steve Jobs, USB-C is still a "bucket of hurt" for Apple."

Yeah, a bucket of hurt because it's not Apple proprietary, and they can't make buckets of $$$ from licensing.

Lightning plugs are the worst. If you look at those tiny gold fingers under a 10x loupe, you'll see that they're very thin, and wear off after repeating plugging/unplugging.

Ya'know, I said almost the same thing to Pharaoh about the Sphinx's nose...
