Google Assistant arrives on the iPad, but still isn't going to replace Siri soon

Apropos of nothing except to vent about dumb smart machines (to date) - the most most touted as genius programming tool in the digital universe is Wolfram Alpha - I've tried multiple times over the years when a regular search won't do and have yet to get anything resembling a useful answer - even to things that I would think would be well within its stated functions......

....or maybe I'm the dolt for continuing to try (hoping it will have improved as also promised in the beginning, i.e., as its store of data continues to grow).

While I like my Apple products, Siri is THE WORST thing about them! 90% of the time I call her a dumb b***** because never a correct answer not even close unless it is a SIMPLE thing like a reminder or a measurement conversion, I can ask the same questions that Siri can't get to the google app and EVERYTIME I get a correct answer!! Plenty of fan kiddos on here badmouthing the google assistant but I've always found it much better than Siri, and that goes for the map application too.
I bet if you used more all caps she'd understand you better.

God, this is a badly written app.. what a pain to sign up. It's not possible to upload pictures. Even though it gives the option. It's also a pain to just write a comment. This isn't a native app AND IT SHOWS. Bad work..
This poster is clearly talking about the AI app, not the Google app. Note his 1 post history -- he's saying using the AI app is difficult to comment with.

After a year stuck just on Android devices

How long has siri been stuck just on Apple phones?

I'd say Apple allow this as a Siri replacement with one catch, before you install this a warning pops up telling you EXACTLY what Google does with your data.

"WARNING: Google collects your personal data to sell to advertisers."

This will raise awareness while giving goog an offer they can't refuse.
So collecting data doesn't improve services at all? It's just to sell to advertisers? And is Google selling my specific personal data to 3rd parties or is it anonymized data that can't be traced back to an individual user?
Google does ad-placement based on what they think they know about the basket of anonymized folks you are lumped in with. They don't sell data. Cali is confused.

You have to assume that Google sells everything it knows about you to anyone willing to pay for it.
If this needs a google account to be of any use then there is your feed to the Google AI.
Like Facebook, whenever you sign into Google, the Ad slinging part of Google will get your complete history including things like browsing history, CC purchases, where you have been and used Google Maps etc etc.
If you are comfortable with spy on you 24/7/52 then go ahead and use it.
I've stopped using google entierly for this very reason. Perhaps you should think about your use of Google as well?

I want to share my activities with Google, this is how Google learns and improves the functionality it provides and makes life better for us all.

All the Google services such as search, Street view, Google earth, Google maps and android os have helped educate more people on this planet than anything Apple have created and it is all free to use.

Google is awesome and so is Apple, we need them both.

No mention in your piece that it's US-only. You know, how most of Apple's users are outside the US.
We covered that in yesterday's news announcement about it.
As a reader i'm not sure you can assume we see every story your write. I didn't read that one, so the info would be useful in this story too.
We don't assume that. That's also why we linked to the previous news story in the first paragraph about when it was announced, and didn't roll right into the installation paragraph.

On the homepage, where we get most of our traffic there's a "Hands On" badge, telling readers that this isn't a news story and is about using the title. I'll talk to the powers that be about migrating that over too.

Facts are "badmouthing"? Google is a spyware company walking the line between legal and illegal, sometimes falling on the illegal side.

YES. Google makes over %80 of its profits selling your data to advertisers. Don't kid yourself, goog isn't a charity nor do they have morals.

What data does Google sell? Can you give any example or it is just not knowing their business model?

Cali knows Google doesn't sell personal information. It just serves his purposes for the moment to say they do. I wouldn't expect a reply from him, but surprises can happen.

Fortunately Apple isn't in the habit of lying to their users so they'd never issue such a warning.  ;)

Only if you don't personally care about either honesty or truth. Worse, some less-informed readers might mistake what you wrote as fact when it's demonstratively not close to being true.

Good God Man, just go back to Google HQ and say you have worked hard all day!  Can we have our Apple blog back now?

Why would supposedly intelligent and informed smart people here at AI want to spread falsehoods, distrust, and general misinformation? If that's what your goal is why would you even deserve to "have it back"? You wouldn't be helping anything and certainly not an asset to the forum. (Not saying that at all applies to you)
