I get the feeling that eventually the iPad or tablet will take over and wipeout the traditional computer.
Just like the computer has wiped out paper... or do you see how writing on paper and printing material on paper still has a place in the world despite the success of digital media?
I guess to be fair, it depends on what 'wipe out' means. If it means what the majority of people use the majority of their time, then that probably will be the way things go. But, that's less due to the capabilities of tablets, but that most people haven't needed the power and potential of a desktop/laptop for quite some time now.
But, if it means wipe out, in that almost no one will use anything else, then I don't agree. It's much more than just advancing technology. There will always be a performance/endurance gap... that's just physics. Then there is the user-interface and input control to match the task. And, as you point out the bigger picture is more than laptop vs tablet.
I just see market shifts in what the majority use for particular tasks, not any kind of wipe out.
