Say what you want about Schmidt but at least Page and Brin didn’t have to wander the wilderness and create a fantastically wonderful animation studio before returning to Google.

He also served on the Apple board of directors between Aug. 28 2006 and Aug.3, 2009, and stepped down to avoid any conflicts of interest  after Android had copied enough from the iPhone to really piss off Steve Jobs.
    .

    There.  Fixed it.
Maybe is just me but Eric Schmidt always struck me as a creepy, untrustworthy, corporate so-and-so.

He's also been involved with some of the recent Clinton corruption. There's a reasonable chance Google gets broken up. I'd say this was damage limitation by getting rid of a guy who has ties to one of the biggest scandals in US politics.

I've read some blogs that promote the idea, some for obvious "fan" reasons. How would you suggest it be done? Split into 2 search/ad companies competing with each other? Splint into separate ad company and a standalone search engine which doesn't seem reasonable since search must be paid for by something, and then what do you do with the "bets"... or maybe split into Google and then "everything else" which would negatively impact overall industry research and tech development? Finally if the result is an even richer, powerful, and more influential Apple controlling a extremely high percentage of smart/mobile profits and suppliers how long before they get the same treatment?

TBH do you believe Google is more powerful than Apple? In my experience money is power.

I think Google "broke itself up" by changing to a series of companies all operating under Alphabet. They saw where the political winds were blowing I think (especially in the EU).

As an Apple fan who has clear memory of Schmidt's treachery, I stop paying attention to what Schmidt does and says. Indeed why should anyone at Appleinsider care about Schmidt's retirement?
Because it's very relevant and major industry news and many of us aren't teenage girls straight out of "Mean Girls"

I actually do believe that Schmidt’s love fest with the Clintons and Obama is a huge liability.

Getting rid of Schmidt would seem to be an effort to reduce that liability.

I also do believe that Alphabet is going to be broken up. It means terrible things for guys like Sergei and Brin but the stockholders stand to gain substantially.

Stripping YouTube from Google would seem the most logical choice.

As for sexual misconduct, that would not surprise me either. Having mistresses isn’t the issue, coercion in the workplace to gain favor is. Given his role and powerful position he occupied, it would not be surprising in the least.
