We've heard this Samsung nonsense before. Just like when they "accelerated their work" to release their hideous smartwatch when rumors of the Apple Watch started floating around.

I am willing to believe this... up to a point. But this is all about appearances and the timing of this release is conspicuous. I think Apple should now just go ahead and copy this feature entirely, just make it a lot better. Samsung's high end smartphone business model is based almost entirely on shamelessly copying Apple as quickly as possible so I don't think Apple need to worry about copying some nifty features from Samsung. Samsung fans heads may pop, but who cares? For me it is not about who makes the best phone not who copies who - I am not even looking in Samsungs direction.

I thought all the Android fan boys said Samsung will have 3D face recognition on this version of the phone, They said Samsung was working on the same tech as Apple for a long time and it was ready on the next phone. We only saw it from Huawei, so their 24/7 copy machine is turning out new features faster than Samsung. This why Samsung is loosing in China and can not out do Apple elsewhere.
What exactly is Samsung loosing in China?

Copying or not, who in their right mind admits to anything that result to negative consequences.

It may look like a copy, but it's not. That's the genius of it. (Rolls eyes right here.)

I woke up to the news of new emojis hitting the market, even if this is a non-Apple developer, with so much excitement I almost peed my pants! What will they think of next?
    A pee-in-your-pants emoji?

    Marketshare.

Specifically due to the challenges dealing with North Korea, there is some resistance to purchase Samsung products in China, and the rest due to competition.

I agree that Samsung doesn't copy Apple's approach, but their alternative looks like ass in comparison.
Then know it and that is why they take inspiration in/copy whenever they can.

How bullshit this sounds...lol. Samsung is the type of companies that will release any feature, working or not working, to the market to claim the first. So, if their 3D-Emoji was anywhere close to production within 2 years of productions, they would've released it. Beside, Samsung didn't have any IR camera for it to work in any of their flagships.

Samsung: admitting that you spent 17 years working on a totally useless feature is far more embarrassing than admitting that you copied (yet another) Apple product feature. While I'm not a big fan of Apple's Animoji one way or the other, it's very easy to see how Apple came with Animoji as a side project that spun up from their work on 3D facial mapping. Heck, Animoji is not a bad way to model and demonstrate the capabilities of Apple's 3D technology - and some people think it's cute.

So if Samsung engineers were laboring away in the secret confines of their crack R&D lab for 17 years and this is what they have to show for it ... in the wake of Apple's little side project ... what the heck were those engineers shooting for?

Gotta issue a red card with a "BS" embellishment on Samsung if they insist on perpetuating their lame excuse on this one. Just fess up and take it like a man. Your customers will forgive you like they always do.

It is a copy when every time Apple does some new feature on the iPhone, Samesung goes and does the same thing on their following phone. There's so many examples of this. This is no different. It's not a exact copy. But why didn't they do this a year or 2 ago? Why not a year or 2 from now? What Samesung has done is creepy. It's kind of similar Nintendo Mii, or the Xbox Avatar, only this is based on what you look like and then makes a creepy looking version of you, which mimics your face just like Apple. Don't worry, Samesung will copy Apple even better. Then make some lame excuse how they're not copying. The way Samesung had been making it out to be. Like Better than Apple, next Gen. Innovative. Taking things to the next level. Yet I don't see that at all. The S9 series phone this year are a huge letdown. At least they fix their completely crappy fingerprint location, to just a crappy fingerprint position. Why not under the screen? Maybe they're saving that for the S10? Maybe they need something for the Note 9?

Mmm, they even fail to copy. But the worst thing is, they even fail to defend the failure of the copy.

Seriously there's too much poutrage on this thread, if you guys don't watch out you'll end up like macrumors. FFIW the Samsung answer (if indeed it is meant to be an answer) is not a copy of anything Apple has done unlike much of their serious stuff like actual design thievery. In this case it's simply a risible and creepy looking badly executed attempt so it's definitely not a copy. It's the sort of thing that Android owners deserve.

AR Emoji" has been in development for many years, and isn't a copy of the Animoji found on Apple's iPhone X“.

Ok phandroids, in which case, why do you not believe:
”Apple iPhone X has been in development for many years, and isn’t a copy of the Samsung Galaxy S8”.

Their take on AR emoji sucks. On the other hand, the variable aperture feature is revolutionary.
I was dreaming of this for quite some time, debating whether or not it was possible, and when we'd get to see it.
    Bravo, Samsung.
Lol. Not revolutionary. Variable Aperture has been around for smartphones for quite sometime. The first smartphone to have it is a Motorola phone back in 2008, then later by Nokia N86 in 2009. Take note, the Nokia phone has triple aperture rather than dual on Samsung Galaxy S9.

They just wait for people to forgot the existence of technology and a decade later, claim it as theirs. Shamesung.

Sammy engineer:  I was using 3D animations back in 2001, but just didn’t think to release an AR-based emoji feature, or any AR features, until March 2018, coincidentally with the very next Galaxy model to ship after Apple released AR capabilities in the iPhone.  Pure coincidence that after 17 years of having this dream that this is when we decided it was ready.

Oh, and that lag as you use it, which suggests it’s not ready and was likely rushed to market?  Just ignore that, it doesn’t imply what common sense suggests.
