MacWorld soon... who cares?

well, if that statement doesn't get the flames a-goin'...

seriously, though. i am so not-jazzed-up about this show at all. and i am usually counting the minutes before the keynote. maybe it's because i know apple and macworld's relationship is hanging by a thread, and i may be watching the death throes of big announcements at trade shows.

or maybe i get the bad feeling that all the hope i have for new hardware will result in something utterly disappointing, like ipods in different colors and eMacs with bigger hard drives...

or maybe i know i'll get more bake-offs and iapp demos than i really care to see, since panther (aka mac os x.3) seems like a next-summer type thing.

or maybe it's because there isn't even a HINT as to what's coming. i know steve likes his secrets, but sometimes leaking a little to get people's attention isn't so bad if it means people are actually paying attention for the really big stuff...

or maybe it's because... ah hell, i dunno. it's just weird, you know? like i should be way more into the anticipation.

i guess last year's hype didn't start until new year's eve/day on apple.com, so maybe they'll still surprise me.

I'm with you. I really don't care at all that Macworld's coming in a couple of weeks.

    Ditto.

I don't expect anything big until the 970s hit the street towards the end of '03. Mediocre hardware bumps and some possible iApp updates are all I expect. Not a lot to get excited about.

Wen was the last "bake off" at a MacWorld, though, rok? It's been at least a year or year and a half, no? I guess that's a sure sign that the G4 isn't something that Steve wants to show off on stage. Either that or Photoshop for OSX isn't up to snuff with OS9 when if comes to running through series of multiple actions.

    *sigh*

    I'm stoked.

Buying my wife a new iMac, and buying my best friend a new iMac as well. It's his first Mac, and I talked him into waiting a few weeks (really wanted if for Christmas...) for the revisions. Picking it up for him since I can get pretty good pricing here.

And since we all KNOW they're getting an overhaul, it's going to be exciting waiting to see just how much iMac we're going to be able to get. I expect big things.

OK it's not THAT exciting... but I guess it is if you're planning on plunking down a few grand the second something gets released.

Is she going to be like you and get a new Mac all the time, murbot?

i dunno, i don't expect amazing things for this mw, but i always look forward to them. besides, i've got my tibook-- i'm a happy girl. i hope we don't see the death of the big trade shows-- i don't care about apple's finances or whatnot-- i want my tradeshows! i love the lights, the crowds, the sounds, everything. weird, but i love it.

For some reason, I'm not very excited about MWSF either. Odd. Usually, I'm all spazzy and wound-up, and heavily participating in "I predict..." threads here.

This year is just like "hmmm....okay, whatever...".

    And I don't know why.

Perhaps because I'm pretty satisfied with what I have and the thing I've been waiting for for so long (a G4-powered, flat-screen iMac) has come to be?

I guess about the only thing from Apple that I'm secretly lusting for would be a G4 iBook of some sort, maybe with a 13" wide screen?

But that ain't happening next week, I'm sure...

I think people are finally getting it worked into their primal instincts that major hardware announcements are no longer happening at Macworld.

Whether that's a good thing, I'm not sure. At least there will be slightly less disappointment...

Major hardware announcements might not be happening at expos for lack of impact, not for lack of want, regardless of what Apple might say publicly. If a PPC970 smokes the wintelon competition, you can bet it will both debut during an expo and be front and center for a backoff during said expo. Jobs is a media whore and would never pass up a chance to reveal significant new hardware technology at an expo. iBooks were a special event, and 'book/powermac updates have been quite affairs, but the last time Apple felt it had somethiing significant (in the iMac) they not only showed it at an expo first, they ran teasers for a whole week before.

I am not expecting much, except maybe an impromptu lynching of Steve Jobs

They'll have to give the crowd some pretty hefty RDF blocking shields for that...

I've been busy with other things.. it's surprisingly easy to ignore the MWNY... uh, buzz, this year. I was just starting to get a little excited today. Since it's so close.

But this thread reminded me that I don't have any money to buy anything anyway, I'm poor, and Apple is expensive. And I don't got me a sugar mama.

Back in the late 90s (1997 - 1999), there was a ton to be excited about. Hardware was getting so good, so fast, it was unbelievable!

My family purchased a PowerBook 1400 in 1996 only to have it blown away by the original iMac in 1998. Then came 2000 where I got my Pismo and it was the one that smoked the iMac. Less than 8 months later, my brother invested in a DP G4 500 tower when Apple was blowing them out.

At that point, machines were getting so much better so quickly, it boggled the mind. But I haven't really seen much yet that makes me want a new machine.

I can still run the latest version of Mac OS X with the latest apps (other than games), and do just about all I need to on my PowerBook. Whenever I have upgraded before, it was out of necessity. But as of now, almost 3 years since I purchased my computer, I don't need to upgrade!

As nice as it would be to have a new G4 tower, eMac, iMac, or PowerBook G4, I can't really make the argument that I need it. After all, a little speed isn't going to help me that much.

I've thought long and hard about buying an iPod as well. After all, I've had the money to buy a new Apple digital device lying around for years.

I just can't bring myself to buy an iPod either, but I am interested in seeing if Apple offers us a new device at MWSF.

The one thing I hope Apple doesn't do is overhype the show again, like they did last year. I still think that they shot themselves in the foot by doing that and that people being upset that they didn't get more than the Flat Panel iMac is what is causing Apple to start pulling out of Macworld altogether.

Who knows what next week will bring, when the show gets closer. But I think many people are happy with what they have and unless they show something so cool that I have to upgrade to use it, I'll be sticking with my Pismo a while longer.

    Never, gonna, happen, period.

.Mac price drops would cause the angry masses to converge on cupertino. After all... lots of folks just shelled out the $ for it and don't want to see that they could have waited a few months and gotten a discount.

I think eventually the price will come down. Probably not this soon, but sometime in the future.

i posted this in another thread, but apple didn't try out the .mac for US$69 special for their thanksgiving sale just to be nice... they were testing the waters. so expect it to drop to US$69 WITH the purchase of an apple hardware product (including iPod).

you gotta admit that sounds like something they would try.
