You pay $50 extra for 20 Gig more storage. Not worth it.

About pricing though. I can get the edu price BUT apple charges tax. So in the end it's the same as retail with no tax. Plus online sellers will most often throw something in with it.

Is this what others are seeing?

iDunno I think 50USD for 50% more storage is a decent deal, but not more than that. HDD's have a way of filling up no matter how big they are.

On Slashdot there was a bit on storage almost being down to $1 a GB. So $50 for 20 Gigs, even in a notebook, aint cool.

Fear not, if Apple's price is borderline acceptable now, it'll likely be hugely inflated in 3 months when they're still hocking the same upgrade at the same price.

$50 for a 20GB upgrade appears to be quite good if you're customizing it. I figured it was pretty good, and I checked Dell and Gateway, they charge about $200 for a bump from 40GB to 60GB. In addition, Apple charges $100 for just a 10GB bump from 30GB to 40GB. So all in all, I think it's actually very good. I mean, you could just buy a 60GB drive and plop it in, then sell the 40GB drive, but I'd rather just pay the $50 and not have to deal with it.

Scott: Yeah, Apple's edu prices are a joke. With tax added on, it's no better than the online merchants. In fact, that's why I bought iBooks from other places rather than Apple, zero benefit to me. If I was at a different university that had better edu pricing, then it'd be worth it.

What's the deal with edu, in some places it seems pretty decent, in other's, well, it sucks. I got 500 off this machine, bringing my total plus tax to just under the regular MSRP. Not bad considering our absolutely disgusting 15% (7%fed, 8% provincial) tax. As much as I'd like to blame Steve for that, I'll have to blame Mulroney/Chretien. One thing that sucks is Apple's excessively pessimistic conversion rates in Canada and around the rest of the world. They suck, we're not using pesos, you know? Not yet.

Forgot to mention, I called my dealer to check on the order and ask again about BTO. As I mentioned before, no edu price on the superdrive12, also confirmed by a dept PDF I scrounged up. But, the flaky asian girl I talked to first time round didn't seem to get the concept of BTO, this dealer DOES do BTO options on edu price stock (though they're only about 5-10% of the Apple Store price). However, BTO will take 6 weeks, "original config" will take 2 weeks. They're expecting a shipment in two weeks and I'm in line for the first batch, WHEEE!!!

Since I'm spending an ungodly amount of time tied to my computer, and I really need to get away from it, or at least away from my home/office I've decided to take the model as I originally ordered it, and use the cash for a nice bag and bluetooth phone instead. Then I'll crash AI from TO area Chapters/Starbucks/Timothy's. I can't wait, it's driving me nuts!

Bah, flaky sales staff; they're the worst. I remember that the retail store for MacWarehouse Canada here in Toronto had the worst sales staff of any computer retailer I've ever been to...I don't think anyone missed it when it died.

If you're looking around for a good Canadian Mac retailer in the Toronto area, I really recommend the <a href="http://www.dvshop.ca"; target="_blank">DVshop. CPUsed is good too, but their prices for software and RAM are a tad overpriced.

Congrats on the new 12" PB!

They've got an impressive little store from the looks of their site -- particularly the little screen writer's resource. Prices look decent too, better than CPUsed/PCused. Are they also an edu retailer? They estimate mid feb shipping, I'm supposed to get late Jan, we'll see.

BabyBook, i don't know if you made this name, but it sound to me that this way of calling the subnotebook may become popular.
