This is getting to be a habit with Apple. What in past years was a "sleepy" quarter instead becomes another "gasp and wow"
Macs are more difficult. Apple depends on Intel there. While I do t agree with everything Apple does with Macs, that dependence is a problem. It’s not a problem as far as Intel’s product delays are concerned. But it is a problem because of the way Apple considers its product lines are going to be used.
most PC OEMs will make just about every combination of components that can be made. Hp, Dell and others have several dozen notebooks in their various lines. Some are small and light, and some are big and heavy. In other words, they cater to just about everyone. Want 32GB RAM last year? No problem, we have this 5.5 pound beauty for you.
apple doesn’t do that. They decide on what they are going to make, and that’s about it. If they have a design, and Intel’s chips aren’t ready to support it? Well, you wait until they are. This is a problem with Apple. Other manufacturers will simply use chips that are available, design a chassis to support them and have a machine for those who want the extra spec.
while a lot of people like what Apple makes, there are also a lot who don’t. And while it’s easy to say tough to them, it’s not that simple. Look at how Mac sales dropped by 13% this quarter, YoY. Does anyone really think this would have happened if Apple had timely updates to their computers? I don’t.
ok, I’m having a lot of problems on my iPad with the last two OS’s With the betas. Never had so many problems before. Never reported so many lasting problems to Apple before. I tapped Mike54 to reply to, and instead, I’m replying to Folio. Sorry. Lots of problems folks. The and nothing appears on the screen. Sometime try to place a cursor, and the magnifier appears instead. The machine goes through random pauses where nothing works from 5 seconds to 15 seconds. This is why it’s not a great idea to use a beta unless you’re prepared for this.
It was a great quarter no doubt but iPhone sales were essentially flat. I’m not sure how much more they can raise the price so they’re going to really have to ramp up services revenue even more,
It was up a few percent. With the overall smartphone market down by, I think, 2.4%, that was pretty good. I just hope that Mac sales will recover next quarter, and the one after. A decline of 13% is large, no matter what the reason. iPad sales up only 1% YoY didn’t thrill me either. I’m concerned that iPad sales are showing less unit growth each quarter. Did the $329 model just give a temporary burst? i understand that the pro was updated last June, and this year, we’re still waiting. They are likely looking at that very closely.
I think the compelling feature that a lot of people want is FaceId. So they may be waiting for that. Of course I am not sure how worth it is to upgrade the iPad every year. I think a two year cycle is fine.
My daughter and I get a new one every year. For us, the iPad Pro 12.9” is worth upgrading every year. For others, maybe not. We do our phones (along with my wife) every other year, and this is the year for that.
Apple's tiny AirPods are turning in mighty big numbers and the demand still exceeds supply. After using them for over a year I now know why.
I see people of all ages wearing them.....EVERYWHERE! These are a huge success for Apple.
I was in NYC for the last few days, and AirPods were indeed *everywhere*!! I could not believe how many people I saw wearing them (this is a city where a lot of people were ear buds of some kind). Walking in th street you easily saw 5-10 persons per minute wearing them.
I think they were close to the number with the default white EarPods.
Sorry haters - AirPods appear to be a tremendous success...probably the most successful Apple product accessory in history...
Apple's tiny AirPods are turning in mighty big numbers and the demand still exceeds supply. After using them for over a year I now know why.
How do they fit in your ears? Do you miss not having a strap for if you wanted to take them out and just wear them around your neck. I do that with my JBL wireless all the time. I would really miss not having that.
They fit my ears quite well but are not snug like in-canal phones or buds with wings/tips of some sort. They do not provide any passive noise isolation to speak of so you will hear some outside noise. I prefer this when I don't want to feel totally disconnected. I don't miss having a strap because I often have a pair of reading glasses (cough cough) or sunglasses on a strap along with a ball cap so one less strap is kind of nice. I do understand why some folks prefer to have the earpieces connected. Everything about the AirPods seems well designed for easy loss, so yeah, you have to be alert about not losing the earpieces or the charging pod/dock. A compromise solution may be to find an around-the-neck lanyard that holds the charging pod. They do work very well for phone calls. I have a half dozen pairs of various styles of headphones and no one type fits every use case. The most impressive feature of the AirPods for me is the ease and reliability of the wireless connection with all of the Apple devices I own. Being able to use them with my Apple TV is particularly satisfying because it allows me to use my home theatre system without disturbing other people in the room who may be reading or engaged in other activities.
Damn! Only $486 million away (up 4.04%) from the coveted $1 trillion market cap for a publicly traded company.
And this is not because of the numbers for this quarter. This is about the guidance for next quarter because Wall Street is always looking at the future, not the present. Apple is guiding for a massive quarter coming up. Keep in mind, however, that market cap is a vanity metric that means absolutely nothing really.
I've been hanging on to my iPhone 6 Plus since its initial release because it truly is a workhorse and still impresses me with its versatility. It's aged extremely well. Neither the 6s, 7, or 8 iPhones offered enough to inspire me to upgrade. They just weren't that different than the 6/6 Plus. The X is definitely different, very impressive, but it's still a version 1 design. Come September/October I just can't see myself rationalizing spending another year with the 6 Plus as my main device when the delta between it and the immediate successor to the X will be as great as I envision that it will be. Apple wouldn't be investing as much time, effort, and money on iOS in tweaking every last bit of performance out of legacy devices like the 6, 6s, 7, 8, etc., unless they really knew that their next generation phones were going to eclipse the high bar that they have set for themselves. You'd think that Apple wouldn't be doing much to make their latest and greatest iOS breathe new life into older devices - unless they have something up their leave that's still going to inspire existing customers to upgrade from their slightly improved older devices. If this comes to pass the excitement around blowing through the 1T market cap will be a quaint old memory as Apple moves even deeper into uncharted territory.
Looking at the graph the last quarter were the fewest sold in 6 years (and this is the best economy in US in 10 years) and the lowest Revenue in atleast two years. Seems like the desperately need to get new computers out. Mac sales appear stagnant to slightly down last 4 years.
How dare you tell the truth.
anantksundaram said: You might consider taking a look at the market for computers in general...
And what will be your excuse when it doesn't raise Mac sales YoY?
Instant apologism team! That’s amazing. “Even if Apple actually makes new computers they won’t sell any more of them.” What disturbing mental pathways.
More like, we're realists and see the PC market is shrinking. Sorry dude, it's not the early 2000's anymore. Apple can release brand new Macs across the board and I'd be surprised if it really did much in the long run.
So why can’t Apple fix that? They’re the only company that could; why aren’t they even bothering to try? Do they honestly expect anyone to write and compile software on an iPad? The future is not pocketable devices and “cloud” servers controlled by the government to feed them their data (and offload their processing). It’s not because I refuse to let it be. I’m not going back to the days of paying for mainframe time.
Not only is it their best ever Q3, but their guidance for Q4 will also be another record ($60-$62 billion guidance vs $52.6 billion record). That's $8-10 billion MORE than their best ever Q4 in history.
Doomed....
I think that is the big takeaway here. iPhone is still flat but that guidance is very high. Something is in the pipe that will give them a boost and I doubt it's a LaserWriter update.
And you’ve been waiting years for them to show some love to the LaserWriter.

An iPhone X Plus that they can sell for even more $$$.
And that always seems to annoy you for some reason …

iPad sales didn’t surprise me at all. They just don’t get upgraded as often, and Apple hasn’t released a big refresh in a while. I wasn’t expecting a huge uptick in education; cash strapped schools will continue with the cheap Google data-ripping program, which is fair enough. You can’t spend what you don’t have.
After a sales burst from the 2017 MacBook, I’m not expecting a large sales boost for the 2018 model either, so the next quarter sales aren’t going to show much improvement.
But I think we’ll see a big change during the 2019 modular Mac whinefest.

Apple could make a very funny commercial knocking off that Samesung commercial with the guy grimacing at the lightning adapter dongle: have an AirPod user grimace at a Samesung cord. But of course, Apple rightfully avoids this approach.

That’s why there is more than one company making similar products, and of different designs. No matter how good a design is, and the AirPods design is very good, there will always be people who don’t like them.
i get that some people want them to have a cord, for the same reason you gave, and some will just put them in a pocket. As far as falling out of your ears go, while I don’t have them, people who do, as well as reviewers, seem to feel that it’s very difficult to get them to fall out. They just don’t.
Purely anecdotal, but at my gym, the number of AirPods users has risen dramatically in the last 3 months. Most folk use Beats Bluetooth, next biggest group is AirPods. Then we have some oddballs sweating it out in Beats Studio headcans.
But I think we’ll see a big change during the 2019 modular Mac whinefest.
All you have to do is expect “modular, multi-$100 boxes with a proprietary connector that can only use five GPUs out of the hundreds available; just like every Mac Pro before it” and you’re golden. If you don’t get that, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If you do, at least you knew what was coming. Nothing can be worse than that idea.
Sadly this is the reason that Apple is not putting as much care into macs. But the less effort into macs, leads to less sales, which leads to less effort - less sales, etc.
I don't hold much hope macs unless unless Apple wants to break out of this cycle. Of course they will still need to make them but they will just be less compelling to buy.
Didn’t they just release a new MacBook Pro less than a year after releasing the previous MacBook Pro?
The problem is that you cannot differentiate between Apple doing stuff and Apple doing stuff that suits you.

I'm a cheapskate at heart so never had money for a LaserWriter.
That said, I have a $3,000 toilet and equally expensive TV so YMMV but let me change things for you:

And remember what certain individuals who regularly spew here said about them. Apple has managed to smear egg on all their faces big time. These numbers are almost impossible to put negative spin on. Of course, they will try. They always do. I’m especially impressed with the guidance for next quarter.
I was just schooling some kid on youtube who claimed Apple was falling and Apple Watch was a failure. I've noticed when the iKnockoff slaves get egg on their face, they rinse it off and make up some other crap and BAM egg on their face, rinse and repeat.

Agreed Ikrupp: The overwhelming value of Apple/AAPL is it’s integrated ecosystem. Sure, you are in a walled garden - but what a garden.
Your desktop and laptop computers, your iPhones and iPads, your watch - all connect and sync anywhere you are on the planet, all speak the same language, and all “look & feel” pretty much the same.
Forget all the trivial, “they missed the xyz Intel cpu”, “the MBP touch-bar is rubbish”, "AirPods are worthless" sort of twelve-year old wanking and concentrate on the fact that, overall, this company is doing it right.
To my knowledge, no other computer/phone/technology company provides anything approaching the usability and interactive services like this in our hyper-connected world.
Speaking of 12-year-old wanking, someone on youtube was claiming to be over 30 and an ex Apple employee. He blew his cover when he started using words like " the iShit X and Gaypods".
He literally said he was an older man then used the word "Gaypods"....

According to Apple’s summary PDF both iPhone and iPad units were up 1%. I would consider that essentially flat. Cook did hint at services pipeline. I’m guessing that’s their original TV programming and I won’t be surprised if they announce a news/magazine subscription service. Maybe they’ll offer a bundle for all their different services which would be slightly cheaper than buying all of them individually.
I remember a few quarters ago you were complaining that cook was hiding product sales when he kept talking about future services revenue. You said their products must have done bad if they kept switching the conversation to services.
Well it's 2018 and he was right and services are doing incredible!!
Hate to say it but "haha".

Better;
"PC's are comedy items."
I’ve always thought that PC, when referring to PC DOS and Windows meant Piece of Crap. Has something changed that I don’t know about/
Not that it really matters, but for those tracking this, Apple has almost hit that $1 trillion mark:
Apple shares gained almost 6 percent Wednesday after a strong fiscal third-quarter report, but ended trading shy of a highly anticipated $1 trillion market value. The stock closed at $201.50, just below the intraday high of $201.76. Shareholders had previously been looking for a price of $203.45 to make Apple the first publicly traded U.S. company worth $1 trillion — though the tech giant announced an adjusted outstanding share count later Wednesday that moved the threshold to $207.05.
