FedEx gave my iMac away
I finally got some answers today on my missing iMac. It was supposed to be delivered by noon on Friday, and after a few phone calls that was amended to 2:30, then to 5:00. They insisted it was "on the truck" in the city, and must have been delayed... I'll have it first thing this morning.
They couldn't tell me where it was by 11:00 am, so they opened up a case and said they'd get back to me. I just got their call here at 2:30 pm. Bad news.
Another business in the same area here had ordered some computers from Apple as well, apparently, and this stupid bitch gave them my iMac too. They were delivered at 2:00 on Friday. Amazing that FedEx couldn't tell me this during my 3:00 or 5:00 phone calls on Friday, or my 3 phone calls today.
So, this other place (don't know who yet) has had my iMac for 3 days.
What happens with FedEx here, is they pass off items to a local delivery outfit, who then distributes them. So the lady with this delivery company is going to go back to these guys, see if she can get the computer back, and deliver it to me tomorrow. I am just thrilled, of course.
A bit of a strange circumstance, and I don't know what Apple's policy would be on this, but if that box has the seal broken on it I think I'll refuse it on the spot. For all I know, the people there were excited with their big Apple shipment and unpacked everything. I'd have to go through everything to make sure all the accessories are there, the install CDs, make sure the display isn't scratched... and that the right iMac got put back in the box.
Even if the tape was cut and it looks like it wasn't taken out.... screw it. I'm not going to take a chance.
I think I'll flat-out refuse the thing if there is anything other than one piece of packing tape on it. I don't know if I'm being a jerk or not, but even having someone else unpack my iMac and put it back in scares me. I'll refuse it and call Apple to tell them I want the order cancelled immediately. After all this messing around (on top of the shipping date change they gave me), I can probably just get one locally in a couple more days. Apple can have this sucker back.
Of course, it could be sealed up fine, in which case I can just keep the thing... just pisses me off that I missed out on setting my new computer up over a long weekend because some incompetent broad gave my damn computer to THE WRONG PERSON!!!! ARRRGGHHH!!!!
Sorry, I just can't see how anyone with the intelligence to get a driver's license could do this. I'm thinking that the DIFFERENT NAME and DIFFERENT ADDRESS on top of the box would tip her off.
Oh well, we'll see tomorrow.

Too much stress involved in checking it as you said.
You could tell Apple how unhappy you are and see if they can "make things better" with a bit of discount on another order

That would be unfair to Apple since it was not their mistake. Any claims otherwise would be fraudulent.
DON'T take it!
What if the guy at the store realizes the error and decides to play dumb? "Yeah, I only got 5 pieces" "Nope I didn't receive an extra iMac, sorry." Meanwhile he gives it to his aunt or something, how the fvck are they gonna recover that mac? And knowing the worst couriers they'll try and make it your problem, I've seen this happen, and though they can't win, they try and make it hard enough that you'll just give up and write off the loss, doesn't cost them anything if you don't get the law involved and it takes so bloody long if you do, and they don't really have any penalties if you win, they just cover the cost, which they had to do anyway, so they might as well try to stiff you.
Nah, don't even wait, this sounds like some backwater hick operation. I'd call Apple right away, explain that you single handedly fuel at least on of Jobs lear jet commutes each year, and tell them you want a remedy that doesn't include that courier or the miss-directed iMac.
i decided that i will NEVER send anything that is worth more than the stamp, in the mail. the italian mail has stolen last year my 512 MB slot of ram (they will go to hell for that), a programming book, a linux distro (freebsd) and a packet sent to me from cupertino . so i was quite convinced to start to use fedex from now ..
I hope that it gets worked out for you soon though. Playing with new Macs is fun.
first, start it up and check the display. if there are no dead/stuck pixels, keep it.
you can replace cd's, you can replace accessories. it's much harder to replace a 17" LCD with a dead pixel dead center.
look at this as an opportunity to get a shot at a perfect LCD, or another shot at a new iMac.
lol, mur just has to make sure his wife or daughters are home, they can bat their lashes at the delivery guy to keep him distracted long enough for him to test his machine out.

To check the LCD for dead pixels though I'd have to fire it up and get past the setup screen so I could get a full screen black image on it.... that would mean having to unwrap everything - LCD, iMac base, keyboard and mouse, power cord...
I could try I guess.
"If we ever lose this one, we're screwed!"
They probably use this photo here:
Somewhere else there's a note on your's truly, it's a hideous likeness that I won't post here, but underneath it reads: "There goes the neighborhood..."
It's a matter of maintaining quality performance, security and $25.
"$25!!!!" you ask?
Yes.
I had a perfectly abysmal time a few years ago trying to get FedEx to deliver a package to my home. After a couple of days when they claimed that the package had been "undeliverable" I had my Dad sit outside the house all day waiting for the delivery. When it never arrived I called FedEx and raised some major shit.
I ---also--- wrote a letter to corporate in Memphis with ALL the details, the fact that I was a stockholder and the fact that I was blown away at the poor performance level displayed by the company that I had so often championed.
They apologized and sent me a $25 American Express cheque.
The company NEEDS to know when things ARE NOT working and they need to know ASAP.
So go for it!!!
your pal,
Drew
Oh yeah? Well my poster has a picture of me holding a Newton and at the bottom of the poster, it says, "Screw this customer over at all costs".

First we take his Newton, the free Ti is a just a red-herring, a canard, speak nothing of it, the fate of your first born and his lies in the balance, MUHAHAHA!!! Mebbe this one is just in Steve's desk somewhere.
I told the people at my office to not accept the computer if it showed up before I got here so I could inspect it, but the lady said she would just leave it for me to check out, and come back to check on me later.
It's open, but the iMac hasn't been unwrapped.
BUT OF COURSE, it can't end perfectly... the software CDs are gone. I'm going to use this as an opportunity to check the LCD for dead pixels, and hope she can go back and retreive the CDs for me.
Anyone here with a new iMac, can you please list the CDs that came with it? I don't want to take the package here and find out I'm missing one...
THANKS!
