Ok here's a list of CDs that came with my iMac. (all came in a little carboard sleeve with a silver Apple logo on the front. All the CDs were in paper sleeves inside the larger carboard one)

    ? Mac OS X Install Disc 1

    ? Mac OS X Install Disc 2

    ? Apple Hardware Test

    ? Software Restore Disc 1

    ? Software Restore Disc 2

    ? Software Restore Disc 3

? World Book Mac OS X Edition

And give FedEx hell for this. This is an abomination.

Well, LCD seems fine - can't find any dead pixels. Didn't want to unwrap everything though (keyboard and mouse)... so this is just inspecting it during the start up, and to the registration screen.

A woman at FedEx (not the delievery person) just called and I told her items were missing. She wants me to list them and tell her the replacement value.

I told her it's useless without them (OF COURSE) and I'll refuse it if they can't come up with them.

"Yeah, just cut me a check for $50 and we'll call it even. I sure don't need THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE."

Just have to see if they can retreive the disk set I guess. I'm sure it's a DVD too alcimedes, just want to confirm all the other contents of the pack if I can...

    Thank you, Spiffster, that's great.

How loud is your hard drive BTW, can you hear it clicking pretty loudly? I can hear pretty sharp clicks here... I can't even hear the hard drive accessing at all on the SuperDrive PowerBook I've got here right now.... pretty loud in comparison.

    What's yours like, guys?

the HD on my 17" iMac is silent afaik, although it's out in the grad. lab, so i'm not 100% sure, i'll go check for you though.

if the software discs you got were on DVD and not CD, you should only have 3 IIRC.

i'll check what came with the 12" PB when i get home.

(and i do have the superdrive, so they should be virtually the same)

edit: checked the HD, is basically silent. no loud noises at all, just a slight hum of the platters spinning.

Yeah, put a few machines around it to sleep, tell everyone to shut up, and stick your ear to that iMac for me.

If you can't hear it clicking, it's going back. I need silence.

Well, after 20 minutes of arguing and asking for supervisors, I got an RMA for this iMac.

So, I'll see if they can get me the software pack back today, give it a little test romp tonight. If it doesn't rock my socks, back it goes.

You know, an OPENED box computer sells for LESS anywhere else in the world....the fact that the contents of your shipment have been opened would worry me to no end as would the noisy drive. The fact that the screen is free of dead pixels might make me pause to consider keeping it, but I'd say that the situation is bigger than the new machine.

I would say that I feel that the package contents have been "compromised" and that this shipment snafu has been a "costly delay" on my part. I would express disappointment in the company's performance (in these parts the FedEx folks usually do a pretty darned good job) and tell them that I am worried about using their service in the future and that I was going to express this sentiment to the manufacturer of the product that was (mis)delivered to me.

I would do all of the above in writing (ask your FedEx phone rep where you should direct your "letter of concern").

Meanwhile I would do an RMA.

    But that's just me.

Are you sure the plastic wrap was completely unmolested? If the guys got a clue last night, they may have already pulled bits from the machine, swapped the HDD or taken out RAM.

For someone who has bought so many Macs in the past, it's nice to see receiving another one still has a sense of anticipation, what with tracking its delivery, wanting to set it up over a long weekend etc.

If I didn't know you were a married man with a couple of kids, I'd have thought this thread was started by a 16 year old receiving his first ever Mac.

So the delivery person made a simple mistake, mistakes happen. It's an iMac manufactured by the thousand you've bought, not a priceless work of art.

As for the 'stress' involved in just checking over the contents, as mentioned by someone

You sound like a bunch of old women...

[edit: Rod beat me to it, with the same sentiment.. oh well..]

Heh. I think this is going from 'where's my computer?!?' to 'how to squeeze every last drop of blood out of FedEx'

Not that i perhaps wouldn't do the same

But if the plastic wrap is unmolested, i strongly doubt the computer's been compromised. It would take a seriously dedicated opportunist to actually swap internal parts on your iMac (not to mention without leaving any trace).

The machine's probably fine. So, there was a bad mis-delivery screwup... That sucks, but you have the machine now. It seems to be fine, and there's no dead pixels on the screen either.

If they can't find the software CDs, get FedEx to pay Apple to send you a new set. They'll do that for you.

And write a letter to them, if you like. You might get something, like a $25 check or some freebie, if that's worth your time.

I'm leaning that way... and I know, mistakes do happen, and I'm normally a really understanding person about mess ups like this.

And no, I'm not milking anything out of FedEx. I just want to insure 100% that nothing is wrong with this thing. I'm not convinced that the iMac wasn't unwrapped either, upon further inspection of everything. And actually, after inspecting every piece carefully I'm pretty sure they opened a few things. The twist ties on the modem cable don't match up, so it's been untied at least. The mouse wrapping has a big rip in it, so that's been out of the bag... and I just realized that there are no Apple stickers in it. I've never received one that didn't have 2 white Apple stickers in with the manual. I'm sure they didn't stop including them... someone with a new Mac here can confirm this for me.

If she shows up here today with an intact software pack I'll probably end up keeping it, since I'd rather not wait another 10 days for one - that's the updated ETA on a new machine at the local shop. The pixel-perfect display is nice, and I'll get a better vibe on the HD after firing it up for real tonight.

It's just the idea of the whole thing that's ticking me off, and the "yeah, well so what" attitude I am getting from both FedEx and Apple.

This makes 3 botched FedEx deliveries in a row for me. First 2 were items I sent out. The company has to have something against me!

If you keep it, in a months time, the botched delivery will probably be forgotten.

If you send it back and receive one with an imperfect display, it will probably be an every day reminder for the next, well... month until you sell it on eBay.

Yeah, i understand how infuriating a "yeah, sowhaddayawhantemetadoaboudit?" attitude can be. I moved to New York this summer, and it took me a few months to get used to people here. Usually in Canada it's better, but not always. When calling Apple and FedEx, you're probably talking to Americans.. the attitude to customers can be quite different from what you get in Canada.

Sometimes you get lucky though. I had UPS deliver a keyboard to the wrong person in my apartment building a few weeks ago. I called them, and in within an hour or so, a new one was on it's way, overnight, on their dollar. Later, the original one showed up, but the UPS rep told me to just keep both It wasn't worth it for them to go through all the returning etc etc process for less than $80 of merchandaise.

just as a side note, i'm almost 100% certain they didn't take anything out of the iMac, unless it was the user accessable RAM or Airport card.

reason being if you take one of the new iMacs apart, when you put it back together you have to clean the contacts on two heat sinks and apply thermal paste to them. if you don't the machine will KP due to overheating.

not something 99% of people out there know or have access to on a moments notice.

Robo, stereotypical Bostonites and New Yorkers do not represent all Americans. When my family dropped my sister off at Harvard, we quickly noticed the lack of courtesy displayed taxi drivers, airport valets, receptionists, etc.

Oh haha that made my day. Yikes my PBG4 12" is going to be sitting outside at my Gram's house in NH! Racoons might piss on it or steal it! Now I'm going to have nightmares.

System Profiler should be able to tell you what kind of HDD is in the iMac.

Got two with my 12" Powerbook on Saturday. And I still haven't found anywhere to put the two that came with my Cube...
