SGI may be the next to go:

but to who?

The following article tells of MS leaving OpenGL. Could SGI be an Apple purchase in the future. Apple uses OpenGL, Maya, and could indeed use a Unix team that complements OSX with Tech support. This article does not state anything of a take over, but several months ago MS purchased some patents from SGI involved with OpenGL. I believe those assets were to de-solve an old partnership they had combining DirectX and OpenGL called Fahrenheit. Only time can tell. Apple has been wanting a 3D app. This may finally be the answer to Apple's 3D solutions.

If you mean apple making a 3d app from scratch, I don't think that's a good idea. If they made one it would have to be able to compete on the level of Maya and XSI. Making a great 3d app is allot bigger deal than say a final cut pro. It needs to start on a good foundation and have time (years) to grow and mature. Plus there is not allot of money to be made in high end 3d apps nowadays, everyone has dropped there prices, and its a big deal for a 3d shop to switch to another application. They should just continue there relationship with alias wavefront, once the 970's come out you will see some real workstations that many people will conceder. Kind of like using maya on an sgi, but with the benefit of the mac os.

    But what do I know

As far as where OpenGL is concerned.

M$ only purchased the patent on OpenGL 1.3 (not too sure about 1.4) or older.

The coming OpenGL 2.0 won't be affected.

But if Apple buys SGI they get Cray and they can use the tech and people there to make a better Xserve!

Haha tell me to get a "real" computer then...

Buying SGI will give Apple a 3D app. A/W is owned by SGI and so is OpenGL. That would give Apple a bigger presence to add to Apple's technology such as FireWire, QuickTime, etc. By the way, Apple will have even a bigger influence in old Hollywood. Old Hollywood are those who still use SGI computers and not PC ones. Apple can convince movie effect studios to switch to a Mac and Osx from SGI and Irix. Remember that Irix is Unix based as is OSX. They can also illiminate a platform choice by purchasing SGI. Another good feature is the SGI product support team. They can only enhace the Mac and OSX. Their knowledge of Unix can only make a better OS. A 64 bit OS by the way. Irix is one of three operating systems that are 64 Bit. This can help speed OSX into a 64 Bit OS for IBM's 970 or G5. Many good things can come out of this. It will only cost them 300 million to buy SGI with Debt included. While they are at it; pay 260 million for Avid. Get rid of the old names with a new replacement. Avid owns DigiEffects and Softimage. This would be a good thing. Martha S thinks so, so do I.

Until Apple has good hardware offering, buying Alias|Wavefront is just a silly move

Ah yea I forgot about sgi owning them my mistake <img src="embarrassed.gif" border="0">

I know ILM was still using Softimage 3D on sgi for animation cuz its so damn good, but I heard they were making the switch to XSI. Avid really screwed up Soft with XSI after ironically microsoft helped to make Soft 3D so good (access to NT's core secrets), though from what I heard XSI is getting much better. I would seriously kill to be able to use Softimage on my mac, I never was a huge fan of Maya. But I think it would be bad for 1 company (Apple) to own both maya and softimage and then make one disappear. There would no competition. It might be better if they owned Maya cuz so many houses are using it, vs. with Softimage they would have to continue the process of building it back up to a great program again, and then get people to switch back from maya.

And yea Leonis is right. Hopefully there is a plan thats been in the works that will take effect with the 970

This reminds me that the best music programs are made in Germany, the best audio/video equipment from Japan, guess that leaves everything else made in the U.S.A. Only having fun!

The US just pays for all of it. It's like the food chain: everything points to us.

Maybe it would work for Apple if they buy it, sell off 90% of the crud and keep the good stuff. The good stuff would be some of the software dev team, some of the apps and some of the people. Okay maybe sell off 99% of it.

But that's not Apple's style. Maybe they'll buy stuff if SGI is willing to sell off part?

    Also this love for Maya...

Whither AutoStudio? Most Apple hardware was designed with it--as are many automobiles and other products. That won't be ported to OS X. Hope it doesn't get lost in some goofy Parametric or UG buyout if SGI does dissolve.

Maybe if Apple, SGI, Sun, Oracle, and IBM combine, they can take on Microsoft. Now this would be a battle of epic proportions.

Picking up SGI would give Apple a clear avenue to go after the high end server market and allow a complete top to bottom sales effort for Audio/Video/Design market.

IBM could then buy Apple/SGI. They could then merge with Oracle (for database stuff), and Sun.

I think an Apple/SGI/Sun/Oracle merger would more closely resemble the Perfect Storm than any titan. It might even beat DaimlerChrysler, HPaq and AOL Time Warner for sheer internal chaos. IBM would just ... well, let's just say that I can't imagine Apple or SGI or Sun engineers at IBM. It would be like holding the Burning Man in downtown Tehran.

As for SGI, they might be willing to divest themselves of certain technologies, which Apple could cherry-pick. I don't really know if they'd want to swallow SGI whole, though. It would take them years to integrate, to the extent they ever would.

It's nice to see the old SGI buyout rumor back, though. It's been a while. Disney, anyone?

XSI has become an extremely strong package. v1 wasn;t usable but v3 is awesome. Avid has been a huge advantage for Softimage.

As far as I know it is cheaper to get stuff done in Canada. That is another reason why a lot of Hollywood productions are shot and post produced in Canada. I do like you Canadians though.

Yea and can't you get lots of grant money in Canada if your an artist? I heard they really fund the arts well there.

Yea I haven't used the newest XSI version yet either, but from what I heard about XSI in general from long time Soft 3D users is that they took away the foundation and brilliant intricacies of Soft 3D, and basically built 3d tools into a compositing application. But then again the new version could be like gold for all I know. I'll shut up now -
