I can see carriers encouraging iPhone users to switch to Samsung over this spotty crap.

Maybe this will cause Apple to adopt 5G pre-maturely.
Please provide evidence of Apple adopting a technology or feature pre-maturely because it was pressured by a competitor’s product. Where do you people get these dumb ideas anyway?

I agree it's a dumb idea and never said Apple would do this.

But if you've been to carriers their employees are only there to push sales. According to this chart many iPhone users think their iPhone is 5G compatible. If an iPhone user asks for 5G at their carrier, the employee may recommend a Sammy for compatibility. If this causes enough switchers than I can see Apple including 5G in the next iPhone to clear confusion and keep people from switching.

It's a dumb idea but keeping customers is more important.
    My bet:
    1)  It looks like the roll-out of 2019 phones in September will be a major yawn.
    2)  They will announce a really spiffy 5G phone with all the bells & whistles for early 2020.

     Helpful reminder:

There are two kinds of “5G.“ Obviously, I’m not counting AT&T’s fake “5Ge” here.  The vast, vast majority of “5G“ is actually a somewhat more efficient and somewhat faster ”5G” that runs on the existing 4G spectrum. This is generally referred to as “sub 6GHz“ “5G“.

In a very few select spots in every big city where there is plenty of clear line of sight, you will get “microwave“ 5G. This is the one that you always hear about, even though it will always be the rarest form of ”5G.” Speeds up the 10 times faster than LTE’s maximum are possible with this form of “5G,“ but again it has severe limitations in terms of coverage, and the carriers are planning on using consumer confusion about the two different types of “5G“ to raise prices.

Bottom line: if you don’t live near the select and small “hotspots“ in a major city, all you were going to get out of “5G“ is a higher bill and perhaps a barely-noticeable increase in your average speed, along with a very-noticeable increase in your bill.
    That's accurate.
For myself,  I live in a densely populated suburb of a major city.   I have 3 telephone poles within 100 feet of my house that Verizon just bought.   I see only one reason for that:  ultra fast mmWave 5G used to replace the cable that's been hanging there for the past 40 years.

I see many people confusing geography with demographics -- as in:   "Most of the country...."   When it should be "Most of the PEOPLE in the country..."

Urban and urbanized areas have always had preferential treatment from private, for profit companies dating back to the 1920's and 1930's.   That is why Roosevelt created the TVA -- to electrify all the rural areas that had been neglected by the power companies because it simply wasn't economically justifiable to run wire dozens or hundreds of miles for a handful of people.

I suspect that for America's rural areas to catch up to today's communication technology will require another government intervention.   That was discussed during both the Bush and Obama administrations.  But today it has not only been forgotten about but put into reverse as necessary Huawei equipment (even for 4G) is blocked in the trade war.

Damn it, I hate it when false advertising works!

    Stupid AT&T users...

Now we’ll have to put up with more of that crap in the future...

How is false advertising working?  I don't understand your comment? If you were referring to the comment by Mobird .. I thought it was obvious that the winking emoji and the Hallelujah's were sarcasm?

    IPhone X on AT&T -
    In Memphis, TN...
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah, - I Believe!!

....Or maybe you were being funny as well and I misunderstood you?  AT&T pulled this same BS back when 4G LTE was being rolled out. Changed the icon to 4G with a slight speed increase, but nothing like the speed offered from true LTE once it was fully rolled out and available.

% of users who think 5G is ready.
This is the thing,5G will be of limited use.   I would fully expect many phones to fall back to 4G regularly.   The simple fact is that the high frequencies used to implement 5G still have to comply with the laws of physics.   The biggest problem is simple objects can now block signals very effectively.

One might consider the trouble AT&T had in some cities with 4G before they switched to lower frequency bands.   It will be much worse with 5G.

...yet folks will be insistent on buying phones with 5G capabilities all else being equal. TBH why wouldn't you? I doubt very many people would change platforms for it tho. I think most are probably pretty settled into the OS they've become accustomed to.

Apple has a part in this as well. That 5GE icon does not show up without Apple putting it there. So I guess Apple is guilty as well.

What's displayed up there is dependent on the carrier support files. While Apple isn't stopping it, Apple isn't putting it there.
