It was already mentioned but let me say it again: the G3 upgrade card goes in the same slot the 604 card is in now. In other words you have to take out the 604 card and replace it with the G3.

I've seen some USB -> wireless adapters like the ones from belkin: hello

But you'de need to get a $20 USB card still.

    like resurrecting a dead horse....

this may be slightly off topic but i didnt feel the need to start a new one...

are pci cpu upgrades better or zif?

ie i have a now working b&w g3 which landed in the hall outside of my lab and would like to upgrade the processor...

the debate is between the g4 pci and the g3/800 zif...

Without a doubt, get the ZIF. PCI has inherent transfer rate limitations. All of the PCI slots on the B&W are 33mhz accept for the one with the video card...it is 66mhz. So unless you moved the video to another slot (thus slowing the video down), you'd stick a screaming G4 behind a 33mhz bus. The PCI upgrades are really meant for old Macs that can't take anything else.

The ZIF you just pop out the old and put in the new. No traverssing foreign busses or anything wacky, so you'll get the natural 100mhz FSB that the B&W sports.

Another note on the B&W --> you may want to look into a PCI ATA adapter. The onboard ATA on the first revision B&W sucks horribly, though the one on the second revision is fine. Do you know which you have?

I wouldn't touch OS X on an 8600, even with the upgrade. Mind you, however, this is coming from someone who won't touch OS X on a G3 at all. OS 9 works amazingly with a G3, i see no reason to bog it with OS X, and if you add in the overall system slowness of an 8600, you're in for a crawl.

Upgrades for PCI machines DO NOT go in the PCI slot! They are for the first PCI machines that have a processor slot originally outfitted with 604 processors. That's the 7500,7300,7600,8500,8600,9500, and 9600 series machines. It's a bad naming convention that they are called upgrades for PCI machines but it's to differentiate between the original PCI PowerMac and the later ones based on the G3 and ZIF slot.

Oh, that makes a lot more sense! I thought it seemed strange to stick a processor behind PCI.

I cannot beleive you threw those 8600s out. They are perfectly capable luxury computers. You could've donated them to individuals who have shitty 6100s or something, or a school....

Thats sick! I've never thrown away an Apple Computer in MY WHOLE LIFE! It doesn't matter whether its a G3, 8600 or a IIx, its a Mac and someone somehwere would pay to have it.

I know! That is such comeplete lunacy that you threw out those four 8600s, you couldve gotten $50 or $75 a peice if more, so well over $200 for 'em.

My former boss would not have taken kindly to that. We would get more from tax write-offs.
