After being announced at CES 2018, Abode is finally following through with its promise of delivering HomeKit support to its Iota do-it-yourself smart home security update today.

Abode Iota DIY smart home security system
Abode Iota DIY smart home security system now supports Apple's HomeKit

The Iota is a popular DIY solution for smart home owners by combining multiple accessories into one. The device acts as a hub for different accessories but also packs in a security system, alarm, and an HD camera with two-way audio.

This is an easy way to get an affordable security system in your home and add additional accessories when needed.

At the update's launch, the security system, the alarm, the camera, as well as abode-branded motion sensors and occupancy sensors (including the motion sensor in the recently released abode keypad 2), and abode-branded door/window sensors will support HomeKit. Abode plans to add additional accessories to this list a time goes on.

For now, Iota won't support Apple's HomeKit Secure Video for the camera though it is something Abode is exploring.

The HomeKit update is available now for Abode's Iota all-in-one system and its traditional first and second-gen home security systems will also be getting the update in the "near future."

Interested parties can grab the Abode Iota all-in-one smart home security kit on Amazon for $229.

HK powered home security is an area of interest for me. I never expect Apple to ever produce any hardware for this niche, but I do hope Honeywell and similar build it into the commodity residential security panels sold by home security monitoring companies. As is all my equipment remains dumb, other than linking up to the monitoring company via cellular.

My home security service is provided by alarm.com. Shortly after the release of iOS 12 they updated their app to support Siri Shortcuts. Now I have Shortcuts to arm/disarm the system that I can issue from my Apple Watch. It also allowed me to build Shortcuts that control the alarm and also run a HomeKit. For instance, I can say “Goodnight” and run a Shortcut that turns off my lights, lowers my thermostats and sets my alarm.

Having full HK integration would be nice but this is a pretty viable work around.
