Coronavirus forces Apple to close all stores and offices in China until February 9

Apple has closed its 42 Apple Stores in China, and an unspecified number of local Apple offices, in response to the Coronavirus and what the company calls "an abundance of caution."

The company's current plan is for its retail and office buildings to remain closed through February 9, but this decision will be continually reviewed.

"Our thoughts are with the people most immediately affected by the Coronavirus and with those working around the clock to study and contain it," said Apple in a statement, according to CNBC.

"Out of an abundance of caution and based on the latest advice from leading health experts, we're closing all our corporate offices, stores and contact centers in mainland China through February 9," it continued.

Apple says that it is monitoring the situation, however, and will reopen its offices and physical retail stores "as soon as possible." The online Apple Store is unaffected.

The move follows the earlier decision to close two sites, the Apple Wonder City in Nanjing and Apple Tahoe Plaza in Fuzhou. In both of those cases, the malls the Apple Stores are in took the decision to close and were planning to reopen on February 2.

It isn't presently clear what the long-term effects to Apple's businesses will be. As well as Apple's own locations in China, it relies extensively on suppliers and manufacturers in the region. Some are situated in Wuhan, at the center of the outbreak, and Tim Cook said earlier this week that Apple was working on plans to mitigate production issues.

"We have alternate sourcing and contingency plans," he said. "Factories outside Wuhan are less clear. We are trying to factor in factory re-opening delays into our guidance."

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo sees five different impacts to Apple's business. They range from component supply problems, to the more mundane like Face ID not working properly through protective masks.

Probably overkill, but the Apple Stores do tend to be full of mingling people. Probably thousands of infected wandering around without even knowing they are by now since there are >10000 confirmed infected (how many people did they converse with), with the vast majority recovering or not even getting sick.

There will probably be some buying opportunities in AAPL in the coming week as fear shakes out the nervous , but we know it’s capable of hitting 325++ again in due course in you are patient.

Hopefully the Chinese will close all those barbaric animal markets for good now - the cost in lives and $$$ billions to the global economy is massive. They never learned after SARS though. The United Nations should demand it I think.

    Two things are certain:
    1) This whole Coronavirus outbreak will impact the global economy. A lot of stocks including Apple will lose some ground as sales slow and/or they have trouble filling orders as fast as normally would.
    2) Because AAPL declined a bit Apple will be the target of a lawsuit form a group of stockholders claiming Apple knew this was coming and lied about their guidance. The suit will drag on for months and only the lawyers will come out ahead.

EDIT: Fun Fact if you do a list like this, use numbers. If you leave out the space B ) becomes B)

Not any more than any other time Apple has been said to be doomed for the last 18 years.

Here’s hoping some day China as a culture abandons wet markets of unsafe animal butchering, as well as killing and grinding up exotic animals as superstitious nonsense cures, and adopts safe modern food processing and medicine. I saw it when I was there twenty years ago and it doesn’t sound much better.

In any other county citizens & companies would probably consider suing their government for damages (& other countries & global companies impacted should sue the Chinese government in this instance) for allowing the depraved “live-food-butchering” markets to operate which allowed this virus to transfer & propagate.

Same happened with SARS (exact same origin) , and yet here we are again - a global economic disaster all because of the Chinese culture of butchering and eating anything that moves plus the Chinese government did nothing to shut down these sick markets.

Apple will suffer because of this but Apple also needs to move far more production out of China. Too much risk in one place. The whole country is going into lock down at this rate of infection.

Apple is not doomed. AAPL is for a while, especially for those who bought it since last September. AAPL will retest its 2019 lows in the $150 range.

That's true.  But they are far from the only country.

China is doing an amazing job containing this -- far more than any western country could ever hope to do:  Quaranteening entire cities of tens of millions of people, travel restrictions where only one family member can leave home in others, organizing increased production and distribution of safety equipment, building 2 major hospitals in 2 weeks and so on.   Obviously its not been enough and nothing would have 'been enough'.  But they are taking this seriously and throwing all the concentrated power of their centralist government at it.

Many of the closures are scheduled for about 9-10 days.  We should know by then if the efforts are successful -- if the epidemic in China is still growing or if it is shrinking.

In the past 24 hours, there have been 45 more deaths and 2,590 more infected. The rate of deaths and infections continued to stay at about 25% per 24 hours. This means that the number of people who die and people who become infected daily doubles every 3.5 days and quadruples every week.

By the middle of next week, there will be 100 people dying every day and 5,000 people getting sick every day. By February 8, there will be 200 people dying daily and 10,000 people getting sick daily.  By February 15, there will be 800 people dying daily and 40,000 getting sick daily.

You can see how this snowball effect grows exponentially. By March 1, 6,500 people will be dying daily and 350,000 getting sick daily.

By April 1, more than 300,000 people will be dying daily and about 20,000.000 people (yes, 20 million) will be getting sick daily.

By April 18, there could be as many as 10 million people dead every day and 650,000,000 (650 million people) getting sick daily. So, by the end of third week of April, everyone in China may be infected. By the end of April, EVERYONE in China may be dead.

Of course, everyone will not die unless this virus mutates into a much deadlier strain. However, these calculations  show you how fast the epidemic grows. Even if only 3% of people die, we are talking about 45,000,000 (45 million) people dead, which will happen by mid- April. Just in two months, China will be facing a calamity of biblical proportions.

Do you think they are going to worry about making iPhones, iPads, and AirPods while the epidemic is ravaging their cities?

Let’s be realistic here. AAPL will lose at least half of its value, and that will be a fortunate outcome for Apple.

Apple will survive this as a company, but AAPL is going to be hit very hard in 2020.

Tim Cook showed tremendous skill cozying up to Trump to avoid tariffs on Apple products. He had to do it to save AAPL because of his refusal to move manufacturing out of China. This time, however, it’s hard to imagine what he could do to avoid the AAPL share price being trashed.

TSLA will also drop in half this year, but at least, Teslas are made in the US, so they will lose their Chinese market and any benefit of having built a Chinese manufacturing facility, but they will continue manufacturing cars for North America and for Europe in the US. Apple, however, will lose 80% or more of their manufacturing for at least half a year in 2020.

Yes, that is all possible (I'll take your word on the math).  In fact, something like that did happen 100 years ago during WW-I.  It is said that it killed more people than that bloody, disastrous war.

But, without any means of curing or vaccinating itself against the disease, China has rolled out a massive campaign to contain it.  To date we haven't seen a large impact from those efforts -- likely because the disease has 7-10 day incubation period so it appears that new cases keep arising when in fact those people were infected in the earlier stages of the epidemic.   And, other countries are taking serious steps to isolate themselves from the disease as well.

Will China's efforts be successful?   Or, more correctly, successful enough?   We should begin to know that sometime towards the end of next week.  But, the fact that they are popping up 2 new major hospitals with thousands of workers tells you they expect a massive impact of the disease.

No kidding, Apple Stores can be a nest for virus since everyone mingling and touching almost everything.

Not sure how safe it is to spray disinfect to any Apple products. Are the materials made for alcohol proof?
