FYI.. I managed a reseller for 3 years. here is some insight as to how thing actually work in 'the channel'

Apple does not own this inventory, MacMall does. Apple may offer a limited amount of price protection against the Apple Store, but that is about all. Once MacMall has ordered and received the product it is no longer a concern of Apples.

It is also possible, even highly likely if not probably, that Apple Distribution offered these to MacMall at a significant discount to clear their own channels. Apple wins, they clear inventory and save on the overhead of warehousing; MacMall wins as they are able to make close to 25 points on each unit (which is their original incentive to do this) until Apple lowers the price. Likewise they are even then able to offer very attractive prices, say still making 12-14 points, on units after the new ones are released. $1099 for PMac 800 would be a steal, yes? A Dually Gzh for 1999.00.... yep, thats a steal.

The chase: A daily review of MacMalls inventory is absolutely nothing to go on.

I second the motion that ThinkSecret.com has been remarkably accurate so far, and they made it pretty clear they were putting more than a few of thier reputation points, or quat-ma-thingies, on their prediction of Aug 13th - Hence the Headline "New PowerMacs Aug 13th"

I think I'll toss my two pesos into this.

At the financial analyst meeting several Apple execs said they weren't expecting to see an improvment in PowerMac sales until Jaguar was shipping. The reason being that some of their large institutional buyers would wait until machines were shipping with OS X 10.2 already loaded on them rather than have to update the software on a large order of new units only weeks after getting them.

In addition, the head of the retail division ( Apple Stores ) said they were considering doing some " midnight madness" type of introduction for Jaguar on Aug. 24th.

I don't see how much impact a mere software release could have on the media to justify this kind of marketing, however, imagine the hype that would be generated if all of the Apple Stores opened at midnight on the 24th to promote Jaguar and, by the way, here are the new PowerMacs to run it on, available immediately.

Another thing to take into account...is back to school time...true this is more an iMac/eMac oriented buying time...but traditionally the end of summer is a time that people buy a new computer...I know I am planning to get a tower come the end of summer....I think we'll see new powermacs in august.

Phil Schiller is keynote speaker at Seybold. This means no new products announced AT Seybold, but certainly something before it. If SJ was keynoting Seybold, I'd think new products being introduced AT Seybold.

I think this is probably because SJ is Keynoting the Paris Expo, which begins the same day. Could be a big day!!

Don't know if it makes any difference (which it probably doesn't) but AT&T is unveiling their GSM/GPRS Network on August 13th. I know it doesn't mean much, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Inventory of the powermacs is low NOW. Ingram has little to no powermacs Now i repeat, the top execs of apple do not suffer from a mental disability, which would be apparent if they held off release of new powermacs for an entire month when theyve already succesfully cleared inventory and the promotion is ending. Those of you thinking apple would for some reason hold off the new powermacs for a later date are wrong and ignorant in the ways of business. You'll learn. Someday.

I really can't help but feel that Apple is coming out with some really nice machines. If they were only 1.2GHz, they wouldn't try to clear the channel so thoroughly. They'd just sell the older models at the same time at reduced prices. If I remember correctly they even sold G3 B&Ws side by side with the G4s.
  • Reply 37 of 82
Yeah, if you look on the Apple Store Education site they sell the 733mhz model, as well as the current three.

It won't be at Seybold. It's Schiller's keynote, not Steve's.

holding new product while waiting for old to be cleared out is not usual business practice. i doubt apple will do it unless they have compounding reasons to do so. in addition, when will apple's current quarter end? at the end of august or sept? by the way, school is starting around the end of august. i really think apple will make some marketing/sale pitches around that time.

Codewarrior, thanks for posting that link. Now I can use FUBB and BOHICA in a sentence! I even thought up a new one - BOBHICA!

For example: if someone were to ask me how I felt about the upcoming Power Mac updates, I would say:

"Hey ... BOBHICA, pal. You'll be lucky if you're using a 1.5GHz PPC chip next August! Apple's hardware problems are FUBB...."
