No, it would be more like: "I used to use a PC for gaming, but half the games I bought wouldn't work unless I spent 6 hours downloading patches, and even then some didn't work right. I was sick of spending more time getting the game to work than I spent playing it. Now that I have a Mac, I buy the game, install it, and play it right away. Plus, if I do want to 'tinker', I can always put the latest AGP graphics card from ATI or NVidia in my Mac for faster performance!"

the expected delay on both the 933 and the ghz is 20 days.

    on a related note, they have 23 pbg4 800's and 33 667's in stock.

I find it telling that they sell so many of the high-end model and so few of the others. The lower-end machines just aren't a good value. Now, if they sold the entry-level iMac flat panel for $999, they'd sell some. Of course, they wouldn't make much money on them. Maybe $1199? I just don't see people shelling out $1400 for the iMac with its current features, especially when they can get the much better superdrive model for $1800 or an iBook with combo drive for $1500.

There are a few things that I have noticed that no one else has touched on, and recap a few others.

    1. Various reports seem to indicate that the current powermacs are end-of-life status, and that quantities are low with various vendors.

    2. August 12 is the end of the current Powermac promotion.

    3. According to various rumors, Jaguar went GM last Wednesday. There were comments that this was earlier than expected, and some developers thought there would be a few more builds before reaching Golden Master. It was pointed out that with OS X 10.1, GM was only a week before ship date, and they still were able to manufacture in time for the ship date. 10.2 went GM three weeks before ship date. If Apple were going to release new Powermacs on August 12th, the early GM date of 10.2 might have been to get 10.2 shipping on the new Powermacs, which it seems there is time for. Jaguar is shipping without iCal because it wasn't ready, even thought there might have been time to delay GM until it was ready and still make the 24th.

    4. Phil Schiller is keynoting Seybold. It doesn't seem likely he would be the one to announce new Powermacs.

    5. Apple Expo Paris's keynote would be in the middle of the night for most people. This doesn't seem like the best time to release a new Powermac line.

    6. In January, Apple bumped the speed of the Powermacs two weeks after Macworld SF. No annoucement was made at Macworld before this speed bump.

This is all circumstantial, but it does seem to me that this makes a new powermac announcement around the 12th more likely.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Not quite - every day w/o new PMs is another day the reseller doesn't sell product. Apple has already sold them to the resellers, and it's their product and inventory now.

Whats the usual notice period for Apple Media Events? It must be around a week or so? Maybe an announcement within a day or so?

there might not even be an event...

seeing as if the PMs are lackluster they will just do a silent bump.

I figure they're either gonna come the same time as jag (which if true they will do a press thing to promote them both) or Paris, assuming jobs is keynoting

damn, I was just in paris too! I should plan better

According to this seminar and expo page over at<a href="http://www.apple.com.au/seminars/macosx/"; target="_blank">Apple Australia</a> for later this month, Apple says, "Discover one of the world's most innovative and powerful operating system - Mac OS X v10.2. At this free, two-hour seminar, you'll learn how to work with the ultimate computing platform. See the next generation of Apple hardware in action."

They'll announce the new PowerMacs on the same day they ship Jaguar.

No sense bothering making a big hubub twice in one month.

There's no announcement so far for the 13th - and today would be the day.

First: Apple having events at the Flint Center is an old thing. They have not had anything there for years, they use the theater on the Apple campus now.

Second: I think Apple is just going to do a web update with a press release and some interview press along with some nVidia press releases for the next Power Mac. Not sure that DDR ram and a faster front side bus is that revolutionary considering it's been available on the PC side for well over a year.

Third: Apple would not announce a new product on a Saturday when hiting the wire would cause little to no action till Monday when there will be probably 10 other stories that have hit the wire between Saturday and Monday. It would not make good business sense.

By the way, when you order a Power Mac at the Apple Store it's a 3-5 wait with no CTO, 7-10 with CTO.

Actually there is sense in it -- it gets Apple more media exposure, and gets them into people's faces more often. This is a common marketing tactic.

    On topic.

I was trying to track the quanity of Powermacs at MacMall to see if there was any indication of the 13th as the release date. The problem is the available numbers are all over the place.

For example on 8/1 there were about 2200 1GHz machines listed on their website. The next day when I checked they had only sold about 30. By Sunday though they were down to about 650 but yesterday the number went back up to 1700. As I type this the number is 597. I really don't know how their inventory scheme works. Maybe they list the machines as in stock until they ship and they ship them all at once during the day. Or maybe it is just a random number generator

Either way I am not sure how valid dealer inventory numbers on the internet are.

I don't know why everybody still expecting a G4. In a week time, it will be G5 for sure. FOr the last G4 update, Motorola has only added 200 MHZ along with L3 cache. What makes us all think 1.4 and 1.6 GHZ chips are possible. G4 is not even on .13 micron roadmap. So, if we are expecting speed, longer pipeline, new process and faster bus speed are definitely the three major criteria to get us there. I don't see it on the G4. And if G4 going to get another bump, may be 200 MHZ max. And if that happens, PM sales will continue to slide as their performance difference between the pro line doesn't justify the higher price tag. I don't see that Apple will like to offer all those crystal saving promotion all the time. They offer it only if they aren't selling. Offer another G4 is more like suicide. The next chip on PM will be longer pipeline, higher clockspeed, and much faster system bus. SO my only conclusion is a G5.

Apple Expo in Australia and from Apple.

There are also developer seminars planned particularly on porting from Unix, Java in OS X and cocoa.

Oh I dunno, seemed a fair comment to me, the Paris MW is for Europe which has a massive population. We deserve announcements too, as does Tokyo.

But usually MW Paris is kind of the Euro repeat of MWNY, just as MWTK is kind of the East Asia repeat of MWSF.

But realisticly, Apple now prefers Events not Expos.

No slight against those in Europe was intended. I meant middle of the night for those in the US. People see what they want to see. If that is what someone is focusing on, they missed the whole point of the post.
