Dish Network on Monday announced it will shut down its Slingbox services and hardware support in two years.

In a message to customers, Dish said that its Slingbox servers would be permanently disabled 24 months after Nov. 9, 2020. That means the devices will officially be killed off in November 2022.

While most Slingbox models will continue to work in the meantime, the company said that the number of supported devices "will steadily decrease as versions of the SlingPlayer apps become outdated and/or lose compatibility."

As for why Dish is shutting down its Sling Media hardware, the company said that it was to "make room for new innovative products." No new Slingbox products are expected, and most resellers have been out of stock of the devices for a few years.

It's worth noting that the shutdown has nothing to do with Sling TV, an unrelated streaming product owned by Dish Network.

Maybe it has everything to do with Amazon's Fire TV Recast

Had Sling but stopped using them years ago. Hope TiVo isn't next.
