Sorry to hear about your troubles with the iBook FCiB.... hopefully you'll have a better experience with whatever else you decide to purchase after you sell your iBook. It's good to hear that you reflected on this a bit before making a final decision. Just continue to use and evaluate technology and see what works for you and what makes your experience the best possible.
I think older hardware in general is more reliable. Take my brother's PowerBook 3400 for example... if it's lasted this long, it's gotta be pretty good. Also that was back when computers were still extremely expensive (3400s were over $6000 for the high end model), so they were made better.
Personally I think a clamshell would be pretty reliable and good, although maybe a Wallstreet would be better since it's more expandable. But those are pretty slow unless you stay in OS 9. PC laptops are really cheap these days and although they're not any more reliable than Macs (probably much less so), they do cost less.
That said, I think it is very wise that you're staying with Apple products. FAR MORE Mac users have been pleased with their machines -- and had those machines last for years -- than have had "lemons." But lemons do happen...in anything: cars, TVs, DVD players, computers, microwaves, and probably even cotton pickers.
So I also think it's wise that you sell your current iBook. Even if we all say over and over again that bad things happen to good computers sometimes, the thought of another potential failure on that SPECIFIC machine will always haunt you in the back of your mind.
Finally, I'll just remind you that warranties DO exist for a very good reason. You had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing why. But let me share this with you: Computers back from warranty are like roller coaster trains after someone has puked in them. Really!
I worked at an amusement park for the last 4 summers, and two of those were on a 200 ft. roller coaster. Occasionally, people got sick riding it and would throw up in the train. We'd clean it up THOROUGHLY with oil dry, disinfectant spray, and much scrubbing. After that, however, guests were very reluctant to ride in the seat that was just cleaned. Their reason: Someone just puked in it! Our response: It's the cleanest seat on the train now!
Fear not, FCiB. Apple products are good. Your current iBook is fine. Yeah, it may still have a bit of an after-smell of the "puke" that plagued it, but that will subside and you should take comfort in knowing that it's one of the "cleanest" Macs out there now.
if ur not REALLY nice or REALLY mean people dont ever mention you
stay with apple, i've only ever had one mac fail on me and that was my Performa 6115CD...and it was probably because i opened it and was poking around 50x before it stopped working
I am not proud that I have become upset at the problems I have encountered with my apple experience however those problems do not justify the level in which I admit I have wound myself up over the issue.
Isn't getting wound up over things that don't justify it a sign of true love? If you were completely indifferent to the whole issue, I'd be seriously worried.
Does this mean that the facist thought police are going to continue to act punitively toward the diverse amount of thoughts out there that differ from your/their own?
Nick
I don't understand this reply to my post. Who is 'the fascist'? What police are we talking about? In what way does that police act punitively? You have me puzzled there, Nick. Would you mind explaining?

What else could I say to explain it but... der Kopf...
