US removes Xiaomi from blacklist banning Chinese technology firms

The US Defense Department has agreed to remove Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi from its blacklist of technology firms, following a successful lawsuit.

Xiaomi should shortly be able to resume trading and dealing with American companies, after the US Defense Department agreed to remove it from a blacklist. The smartphone company had been one of many subjected to various sanctions and blacklisting by former president Trump.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the decision to delist the company comes two months after Xiaomi won a federal lawsuit over the blacklisting. Judge Rudolph Contreras then ordered a temporary halt to enforcement of the ban, ruling that the Pentagon had failed to provide sufficient evidence.

The decision also comes a week after Judge Contreras ordered a similar halt to the US Defense Department's blacklisting of Chinese mapping company Luokung Technology Corp.

Separately, in September 2020, US Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler blocked the execution of an executive order banning WeChat from the App Store, on similar grounds.

Xiaomi and the Pentagon have jointly announced that they will now negotiate terms regarding the prior de-listing the company. The court is expecting to hear a final proposal regarding the terms by May 20.

Xiaomi  make some good gear, like portable batteries and robot vacuum cleaners, but all too much of their phone, earphone and computer gear is a blatant rip off of Apple gear. 

And at the moment the Chinese government’s behaviour is pretty bad, making it hard to justify dealing with Chinese companies.

Even when they were doing the right thing, they did it in such a clumsy, inept way with no regard for the rule of law, that it gets thrown out. This is what happens when you have a leader that has no understanding that there are ways to do things if you want them to stand up in court. You can’t bully and buy your way around the rule of law.

Yep. Same as calling the USA a democratic republic. 

Too many people rag on China while buying China manufactured goods at almost every store in the US. It’s difficult to find things actually made in the USA. Even most American branded automobile companies build most if their vehicles outside the US especially parts.

I fail to see how their phones are "a blatant ripoff of Apple gear".  The M11 Lite -- similar lens layout but how many different ways can you arrange 3 lens + flash?

Reviews of their high end phones are usually great.

Your post suggests a complete ignorance of history, of how this evolved since 2007. 

Unless you have a narrative you're trying to peddle, look up Xiaomi's past of ripping off Apple's designs (if not software).

Why yes. Copying is the American way after all. I mean isn’t that how American industry got its start? By copying from Europe.

Trump knew the law very well.  But he either ignored it or used it based on his agenda.

Both statements are true.   Both statements are false.

The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.

Pure democratic capitalism has strengths and weaknesses

Pure communism (better termed autocratic socialism) has strengths and weaknesses

Neither the U.S. nor China has a pure version of either.  Both are a mixture with leanings on one side or the other.

Without his megaphone the claims will be questioned.

No narrative and I don't really care one way or the other, but if you read what I replied to:

IS a blatant ripoff (suggests PRESENT products), not WAS a blatant ripoff (suggests PAST products).  I live in the present and I don't see much of their current product line of phones being a rip off of the iPhone.
