I agree with you, r-0X#Zapchud. The middle-priced config is always the best deal. It always has the technologies of the high end, but w/ a lower clock speed. That has been true for the last year or so: The dual 867 lacked the faster DDR and bus speed, and the current single-1 ghz model lacks the dual processors.

I thought about the G4/667Mhz, the G4/867Mhz and the ultimate G4/933Mhz as one of the worst deals ever.

best deal ever was the dual G4/867Mhz: little slower busspeed but much cheaper as the not so much faster dual G4/1Ghz. they dumped the low end MP configuration for a single 1Ghz because it was the best sold powermac at that time.

so if there will be a new powermac line with the ppc 970, don't expect a dual as low end, ever. it will cost apple to much sales of the faster, fastest configurations.

okay, the G3/350 dvd was, when introduced in januari 1999, the best deal so your right, but it's no science, it's perception.

    btw. i am worried:

i forget to post my next order after my comment.

if we see ppc970 introduced at wwdc, and for sale in september 2003,

i buy a first revision Al 15"powerbook with ppc 970 (in this case second rev Al 15" pb) and a 20" cinema display.

if we have to wait longer for a first rev of ppc 970 say mwsf2004. i have to take a tower with a 20" cinema display. configuration depents on price and features.
