Sony Playstation 'iconic IP' coming to iPhone in late 2021

Sony's CEO says the company will bring "iconic IP" to mobile platforms as a part of the effort to bring first-party content off-console.

Sony Playstation titles will be coming to mobile late 2021
Sony Playstation titles will be coming to mobile late 2021

During Sony's investor relations day, the CEO Jim Ryan said that more games featuring Sony's "iconic" intellectual propery would come to mobile. The move is part of the company's larger effort to spread those properties off-console.

According to VGC, "Gran Turismo," "God of War," and "Uncharted" are Sony's most popular franchises by sales. Sony has seen a profitable start to publishing its games on PC.

"In FY21 we will begin to publish some of our iconic PlayStation IP on mobile and we anticipate that in 2021, that will not provide a significant profit flow, but we do anticipate that as we learn from that experience," said Sony CEO Jim Ryan. "As we increase the number of titles that we publish on mobile, the contribution from both PC and mobile will start to become steadily more important as time passes."

This news follows a job advertisement posted at Sony seeking a "Head of Mobile, Playstation Studios." The listing explained it sought a candidate that will "lead all aspects of the expansion of your game development from consoles and PCs to mobile and live services."

After the demise of the Sony Playstation Vita, the company sought to capture attention in the emerging mobile gaming market with little success. This new effort featuring Sony's classic IP may finally make a dent in the giant that is mobile gaming.

Sony hasn't made any official announcements for titles or distribution, but its new mobile games are expected to be available on Apple's iPhone and iPad. Apple also offers a slew of games from third-party developers via its Apple Arcade subscription service, but there is little chance of Sony IP appearing in that catalog.

Sony will be competing directly with other major publishers like Nintendo, which has brought several popular titles to iOS including "Pokemon GO" and "Mario Kart."

Sony has experimented with mobile titles in the past, including "Uncharted: Fortune Hunter" and "Run Sackboy! Run!" It isn't clear if Sony's future efforts will be in a similar vein, or ports of existing titles -- but given history, the former seems most likely.

Bud, Sony isn't doing any exclusive deals with Apple or anyone else.  Exclusivity deals would only hinder Sony's efforts.  Sony wants to get their mobile/clould/PC gaming initiatives running to catch up with Microsoft.  They got caught flat-footed with MS's Game Pass.  Xbox Game Pass is currently handing Sony's equivalent Playstation Now service it's ass in a hat.

Fortunately, it's early in the life of Game Pass and Sony has time to catch up... if they execute properly.  Executing properly means getting their IP in front of the most people possible.  To get their IP in front of the most people possible they have to get PS Now in a better state... and quick.

Apple should make an exclusive deal with Sony. Especially since Japan hates knockoff iPhones/knockoff iPads.

Do you have reading comprehension issues? Whatever you are asking for - CloudTalkin explained why it WON'T happen and why it is NOT in the interests of Sony to do that. The likelihood of what you are asking for to happen is very slim.

Interesting to note per Sony: they're saying that the standard edition hardware of the PS5 will be profitable within the next few months. Compare that to MS claiming in the Epic case that they didn't make a profit on console hardware.

Given how many keys and control knob Sony controller has. I am not sure how Sony able to plot the PS games to touch screen.

Anyhow, we need Metal Gear, even it is not Sony’s own title.

These aren’t ports of existing console games, they’re developed for mobile, so the controller buttons are immaterial.

Ars has a more detailed version of that story with some of the slides from Sony's investor presentation.  https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/05/sony-lists-pc-version-of-uncharted-4-in-investor-report/ ; The slides are quite illuminating.  The info you're referencing is in one of those slides.  What the slide shows is the PS5 is still not profitable.  Just like the MS exec said their consoles aren't profitable.  Sony sells more consoles so reaching profitability before MS shouldn't be surprising.  It's going to take MS longer to get to profitability.  They weren't implying they don't/won't ever gain profitability.

More interesting, on the same slide is the info that their reliance on console revenue is drastically reduced.  Their money is being driven by software, services, and peripherals.  They really really want their services to grow. MS kinda made it pretty clear a reliance on the console isn't really necessary.  But Sony's gotta get waaaaay more subscribers for PS Now or create a Game Pass equivalent.

Sony specifically says that the Standard Edition PS5 will hit hit "break even" next month and then will generate profits from hardware within a few months. Is it really that likely MS won't be making a profit from base models of the Series X in the near future? That's probably the reason they wouldn't provide any proof of their claims in court.

Because I’m gonna stop calling knockoffs “knockoffs” because some random guy online is offended.

Apple SHOULD make an exclusive deal. I mean everything has its price. Even if it’s a brutal one-year exclusive “window” like companies are doing nowadays. Like Nintendo did but an actual deal to hold the exclusivity longer.
Android is just sh** for gaming.

I appreciate the mature reply but this is again, a hope not a FACT of any sort. It just seems weird that random forum users are speaking for Sony but my hope isn’t welcome. This is no different from all the Apple should acquire Nintendo posts. Sounds nice and is POSSIBLE but in the end it’s less likely. Except this is 100x more likely.

Is the bolded question in your comment rhetorical? I ask because I answered the question in the very next sentence in the quote you parsed from my comment.  I even expounded on that in a subsequent sentence.  My quote reads:  "What the slide shows is the PS5 is still not profitable.  Just like the MS exec said their consoles aren't profitable.  Sony sells more consoles so reaching profitability before MS shouldn't be surprising.  It's going to take MS longer to get to profitability.  They weren't implying they don't/won't ever gain profitability."  So no, it's not likely.  It's also unlikely that anyone thought the exec was speaking in absolute terms of the lifespan of the Series X.

Question for you.  Do you think it's more likely the exec was reluctant to provide proof of their claim in court because 1. she made up a stat for effect to somehow hurt Apple or 2. she didn't want to provide competitive intelligence to Sony about XBox profitability timelines.
It's fairly obvious Sony reaches console profitability before MS.  Pretty sure she was just going to divulge how much more quickly Sony gets there before they do.

My advice to you is don't continue engaging.  You can't win.  Mark Twain famously said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "... at their level, they'll beat you with experience."

MS was testifying in a lawsuit where Epic was speaking in the absolute and claiming consoles were not sold at a profit. That was Epic's justification for not treating the 30% commission and single stores on consoles as anticompetitive. There weren't any disclaimers about that lack of profit only applying to the first year of availability.

But you are more than smart enough to understand the distinction.  I've read your comments across various threads so I know you understand.  Relying on pedantic exactitude to form the basis of an argument seems a bit unnecessary and hollow.  I feel fairly confident you don't even believe the argument you're putting forth.  I could be wrong, but it seems like an argument for argument sake.  There's no logic to believing the MS exec was claiming lack of profit in perpetuity.  Nothing in business works that way.
