johnsonwax, you've got to realize BadAndy isn't wuite an insider and often what he says is wrong. Until I corrected him, he thought the PowerBooks uses 744x variant G4 chips.

You're right. He isn't an insider, and he does make mistakes wrt to Apple. But he knows the ins and outs of PPC. Whether Apple will use a a given chip or not isn't really a question that BadAndy might field, and certainly not one that I'd trust out of him. But if you just want to know about the chip, he's pretty solid.
[quote]Lots of things BadAndy posts about seem almost designed to throw people off or talk about tangents. They're so tedious.

Well, Programmer can be the same way. Good information is funny like that. BadAndy gives a lot more detail than what most people want, but its founded on far more than 99% of the other posts available.
[quote]Royalties? Why do I have to pay dues to Ars?

You don't. You didn't dig up the news yourself. All you did was repost someone else's work. That's my point. Don't compare yourself to journalists.
[quote]They do nothing but slander the AI community most of the time. Frig, Mac Achaia exists because a handful of Battlefronteers like me begged and begged with Caesar in the Suggestions forum and in private e-mail for it. I already paid my dues.

So what if they slander AI? If Steve Jobs himself followed up to a thread in Mac Ach titled "Will Apple ship Cell based systems?" telling us that they would and when, you wouldn't pass that along? You'd just create a new thread in AI titled "Will Apple ship Cell based systems?" and let people flail about?
I don't mean to be harsh, but it seemed really odd to carry a thread over from Ars and not at least make people here aware that there was some decent content there.
you've basically started a pissing contest with Eugene. He's a grown Man if he wants to repost info then let him. He never said he was a journalist.
Given the choice I think that most of us would rather read Programmers detailed posts than to argue about the orgin of topics or discussions. Everything we do in life is in some way or form taught or emulated. We don't spend our lives acknowledging every individual person.
Let's get this back on topic. Anyone think we'll hit 1.4ghz? I'm hoping so
PS: I can't resist, being the pedantic German I am: it's "Wie geht's DIR?" "

Danke, es geht mir gut.
Actually, I intended to say,"Wie geht es innan?", but still not sure of the spelling, haven't lived in or spoken German since 1966.
Note: My earlier post, mentioning we didn't need to rely on BadAndy's post was not meant in any way to impune his knowledge nor his credentials. It was only meant to prove the veracity of his mention of HiP7.
As far as I know, he claims almost no insider knowledge and always qualifies any predictions. He appears to have extensive knowledge and if he is not sure of information, asks for others to post.
Now, the big question is," how many months of experience manufacturing parts using HiP7 are required before migrating the G4 to it???" I have basically been asking this question since October of last year. Only Motorola knows and isn't talking.
It would be, "Wie geht es Ihnen?" - wow, most foreigners NEVER get that far!
Concerning Bad Andy, I only just now became aware of the fact that some other posters were discussing his knowledgeability/credibility - I greatly enjoy reading his posts even though they might be lengthy at times; I didn't see your comment as a statement on him at all, instead I took it rather personally, like I was supposed to know squat about what I was talking about... (being a molecular biologist, I probably don't, concerning computers)
[quote] ... . Only Motorola knows and isn't talking.

I keep wondering whether a) Motorola isn't allowed by Apple to talk about their actual plans for G4+ and on, b) whether they are being chicken to talk about it after the 1999-2000 non-ramp disaster after widely opening their mouth and bragging about HOW GREAT the capacities for ramping the G4 were supposed to be and the situation hasn't improved much since, or c) if they may be trying to leapfrog the competition with whatever they are/must be working on and just don't want anybody to rain on their parade.
I would love c) to be the reason. Time will tell, I guess...

Thanks. I've read a few of BadAndy's posts over there and for the post part they are pretty good. I don't agree with everything he says, but I'm sure the same would be true in reverse -- technical opinions are still opinions.
I'm sorry if anybody finds my posts tedious, skip 'em if you don't like 'em... my feelings won't be hurt, I promise. I might get annoyed if you keep talking about something that I already explained was impossible though.

What? Never! You are one of 3 peeps I enjoy reading posts from as there seems to be some basis for them and they are also entertaining. Other than yourself I don't mind hearing from moki who is obviouslly in the software game, and Dorsal M for some of the more eye-raising posts.

*CONFIRMED!* New processor could be anything! Which is why the Mac rumour scene is so interesting: Apple is keeping us in the dark, fuelling the (sometimes wild) speculation.

Thank you for the correction. I lived in Ramstein(1964) and Bitburg(1965-1966). Haven't used German since then, but did ok communicating back then.
As far as your taking my comment personally, I apologize, I never intended to question your knowledge(re: my degree is in Biochem and I certainly have little knowledge in computers
) I try to make it my policy to never offend other posters or make comments on the internet that I wouldn't make in person.

I'm sorry to say it's hard for me to get excited about a 167MHz boost in proc speed and 33 MHz in bus speed. Firewire or Gigawire is impressive but Apple still needs more to make me part with my money. I'm talking new G4s made by IBM or some other company with half a breath of life left in it. 1.4+GHz dualies and 333 or 400 MHz buses with DDR 2700 and up. I think Apple should try to skip to where hardware is now, possibly even move ahead with the nforce chipset, HyperTransport, RapidIO, something to put them back on top.
Every time I've purchased a Mac or Mac clone they were the leaders in technology and speed. I'm not going to stop now.......

I'm seriously thinking about developing a signature, with those exact words of course.
Eugene, are you sure JYD didn't hijack your handle!?
However a small increase in bus speed coupled in DDR RAM with a slightly faster dual G4 would yield much improved performance. FireWire 2 (Gigawire?) would be nice too
The 1667 MHz Athlon XP was released in January. AMD is at 1800 MHz now. That's a 133 MHz bump in >6 months plus a die shrink!

I've just learned that there are 3 PowerMac 1167 Mhz machines here in Norway, tested by the few Apple Certified Norwegian engineers. They wouldn't tell me anything else (formfactor, bus-speed etc) but told me about the Moto G4/1167MHz when I pushed them about Power4 and x86 rumors.
Comments
MOS 13 is the main plant in Austin ... at least based on everything I've read it is.

Yup.
MOS13 was qualified for HiP7 almost exactly a year ago now. AMD has been shipping Athlons made on the HiP7 process for about 6 months now.

Apollo is the 10 stage G4. It is also likely the G4 w/ DDR support

Motorola refers to the 7455 as Apollo.
new PowerMacs will use 333 DDR

You can take that as confirmed (yes I said the magic word) since the Xserve uses 266 , and the Mac RAM vendor also lists 333 DDR RAM.
That doesn't tell alot about the processor of course.

No die shrink @ 1667MHz??
So still Moto inside, but no G5 (of course).
We'll see what has happened when we get to MWSF.
