That's why it will be wireless. It needs to be something special. Otherwise I might just as well buy Unibrain's Fire-i webcam.
But my guess is, that the camera will be integrated into new hardware if any of the iCam rumors turn out to be true.
No, an integrated camera is not the solution. If a camera were built into the monitor it wouldn't be flexible enough to be of any real use. Still think they will sell a separate cam IF they're entering the webcam business.
If I want to use a webcam, I just plug my video camera into the Firewire port and scare people with the quality of the image...
Looks amazing, seriously.
So true, I use my Sony TRV 520 and it is awsome. I have a wide angle adapter lens, which coupled with the zoom capabilities, makes a great (if expensive) web cam.
I'd like to see an Apple DV cam that uses a hard drive instead of tape. There is an opportunity to innovate here that shouldn't be missed

It does make perfect sense in portables (iBooks, Powerbooks) to do video chatting. Regarding desktop machines I agree with you. Here, a more flexible version would be appropriate. If Apple introduces iCams it will be because of the integration with the upcoming iChat 2.0 in OS X 10.3. and it's video conferencing capabilities. So integrated cameras look very likely to me, but there will be external models too.
Regardless of what this is, if housings are being produced now when can we expect a release?
Who said housings are being produced now?
Besides if Apple is planning to introduce a webcam it would almost certainly be released with iChat 2.0, which I believe is tied to Panther, which -- at best guess -- won't be available until the fall.

I don't see why cams aren't just built into the monitors. If they can put them in $100 phones, then you would think they would add them as standard option with computers that are supposed to be "digital hubs"
CubeDude ~ 1 hour of raw DV is about 20 GB, but for a consumer Apple could use the technology that they use for RT video in FCP or a further compression using MPEG-4
ADC carries USB, so a mini web cam in the monitor wouldn't need another cable.

Isn't raw DV too large for a small hard drive?
