It is amazing how we just keep repeating the insanity. We know that mask mandates and lockdowns don’t work. This is unequivocal. That is not to say masks don’t work at all, but the way we’re wearing them clearly will not be effective.  We aren’t talking about wearing an N 95 or better mask when entering a high risk environment like a medical facility or a nursing home. We’re talking about wearing a piece of cloth or paper across your face while you shop for your new AirPods. It’s not going to do anything.
Sure they do. It's asshole republicans who can't seem to follow simple rules that keep exacerbating this problem.

I now see plenty of businesses saying that if you're vaccinated you don't have to wear a mask, but for unvaccinated people to wear them. Are unvaccinated people going to wear masks? Not the ones that I know.
Yep, the so-called ‘honor system’ is a joke. Someone who refuses to get vaccinated is also not going to pay attention to the honor system by wearing a mask. They see it as an excuse not to wear a mask and don't give a shit if they spread the virus. Time for vaccination passports and severe consequences if caught using a forged one.

But on the other hand, the government is so incompetent it would be a complete mess. I got a letter from my county health department saying they had no record of me getting my second Pfizer shot. I got both shots at the same county vaccination center and have my county vaccination card with both stickers showing the dates and time of both shots. See what I mean?
And it's the unvaccinated who are contracting severe cases, not the vaccinated. If the unvaccinated want to take their chances, let them.

Actually, in England, vaccinated people make up %40 of covid hospitalizations.

Which is expected when using a weak mRNA vaccine that only covers one aspect of a virus (spike protein), rather than traditional vaccines that use the entire virus particle to elicit a full immune response; it's very strange that mRNA vaccines are being pushed, while natural immunity is being ignored. Is this because natural immunity is so much worse? (Of course not); is this due to desire to control, to push for vaccine passports, etc? (Seems like it).

And it’s this type of uninformed comment that has the US in the situation it’s in.

N95 masks are designed to minimize incoming exposure and transmission. Proper cloth masks are designed to reduce transmission. They help capture the viruses encapsulated in micro droplets as you breathe out, reducing the chance of a contagious person from spreading the virus.

Mask wearing has been proven to help reduce spread and the data can be easily seen when comparing places with and without mask mandates (along with how seriously the people take these rules).
Just like the lockdown left, you’re just making shit up.  If mask mandates worked, we’d know.  The fact is the places with the strictest mandates had *some of the worst transmission rates.*  Cloth masks do very little to slow the spread of COVID.  They do appear more effective at reducing cold and flu.  To paraphrase a line in “Moneyball”…”if masks are good at slowing the spread, why don’t they slow the spread?”

Given the situation that were in, I’ll take a chance of some effect over a certainty of no effect.
No thanks.  I’m done wearing a mask unless absolutely required.  I’m fully vaxxed and I’m done with a useless piece of cloth.  Anyone who wants a vaccine can get one.  If they choose to risk it, it’s on them.

Looks like we have lots of doctors and scientists here. Who knew they'd spend time on a computer forum instead of doing that incredibly difficult work!

Has it occurred to you that the places that adopted the strictest mandates adopted them because they had high transmission rates in crowded areas?  And that mask mandates were never able to be as effective as they could be because in every corner of the western world there were numbskulls who refused to abide by simple rules, even in those crowded areas?

Cloth masks are not 100% effective, for sure.  Surgical masks are definitely better.  And neither are a forcefield, they need to be used in conjunction with other measures.  But even though you keep saying it, there is no consensus that fabric masks are not effective at all.  Quite the contrary, there is significant evidence that they help.

And even if you ignore all that, with COVID-19 being an epidemic, we could really do with a break.  Having less colds and flu going round would help.  So wear a fucking mask.

Get a grip, it's a bit of cotton over your mouth for a tiny part of your day, in the interest of public health, for only as long as an epidemic lasts.  Your watermark for tyranny is basically the same as being required to pick up your trash.

EDIT: Sorry, got confused here and though we were still talking about masks.  I still think the invocation of tyranny is dumb, but maybe a bit less dumb than when I first responded.

I wear glasses. When I wear a mask, my glasses fog up. There are masks which minimize fogging, but they do so at the expense of airflow.

So my choice, if I'm wearing a mask is, be able to see or be able to breath.

It's not just some minor inconvenience. I used to work in a wafer fab. I had to wear a mask 8+ hours a day. When I was able to leave the fab for an office job, I was very happy.

I wear glasses too.  When I need to wear a mask I take them off and live in blurro-vision for a little while, or I put contacts in.

    It's no trouble.

Wait, hang on, you are accustomed to wearing a mask for 8+ hours but you can't handle wearing one for 15 mins when you visit the grocery store?

Come on, realistic complaints please.  That very much is a minor inconvenience.

This asshole Republican wore one throughout the entire pandemic until the CDC said vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear them. Yes. I'm vaccinated. I have been since March 29...but you go ahead and keep generalizing. I know many Democrats who, once they no longer had to wear them, refuse to wear them ever again.

    But, yeah, asshole Republicans.
Funny you call yourself an asshole Republican considering I clearly laid out the qualifiers for that term which you then said don't apply to you. The terms triggered and snowflake come to mind.

Wearing a mask is such a hardship, I'm sure.  What about those who are unable to have the vaccine for medical reasons?  Does your proud self regard and dismissal of other people's circumstances and lives extend to them too?

    1) It is clear. Masks and distancing work, which is why surgeons wear masks.

    2) Assuming you mean "why" do I care, I care because the risk is to society as a whole, not just to people like you. You and your ilk are the reason this was an issue. You and your ilk are the reason we had to endure the lockdowns and drop in commerce for so long. You and your ilk are the reason there is a resurgence. You and your ilk through your spread of lies and spread of viruses have caused the death and destruction of countless lives.

So the Modern and Pfizer vaccines are weak despite having an efficacy rate considerably higher than the J&J vaccine. Good one.

What are you talking about? Lol. They're all weak. J&J is not a traditional inactivated vaccine. Like the mRNA vaccines, it too focuses on triggering spike protein creation; not only does this do a poorer job of stopping infection and spread, but it also leaves open more opportunity for mutation and variance. Good one??

Good one??
    OK, boomer.

It has nothing to do with Republicans. The data on mandated masks and lockdowns is clear.  As for the unvaccinated, who do you care?  They’re taking their own risks.  The vulnerable are largely vaccinated, so it’s not about protecting others.

Surgeons don't wear masks because of airborne illnesses lol. And did you just use the phrase "you and your ilk"? Wow, so very convincing lol. You know that %40 of covid hospitalizations in England are vaccinated people, right? You know the mRNA vaccines promote variants due to narrowly focusing on spike proteins, right? Uh oh, looks like you might be one of those 'ilk' and be causing the 'death and destruction of countless lives'!

It's funny how the most arrogant and condescending people are the ones that have the biggest blind spots.
