Actually, I think I saw 10.2 at MacMall for like $79. It can definitely be had for cheap.
And I agree with everyone else here. Apple is not developing for OS 9 anymore. You might as well learn conversational Latin while you're at it . It will be worth having just to learn the ins and outs. And its a fairly modest investment. Then when you decide to splurge on a new machine you'll be up to speed.

I say get the RAM now. From the sounds of it you usually don`t go out and get new computers that often. If you want to get the most out of your machine get OS X and that extra 512MB of RAM.

Haha, too true. 7 years with the PB 520. The iMac is going to have to last at least 3, that's for sure.
