methinks perhaps the war made people think such flipant flinging of "convictions" (AO) in a time of organized killing is perhaps inapropriate . . .and a bit shallow

search the forums for AO and Block in the past week or two and look for his posts... you fill find your answer... or you could just read his sig...

Things I have been busy with:

1.) College. All this work has taken over my life the past two weeks. It seems I can barely get a break because there is so much busy work to do. I can't wait until I'm done in the next few weeks.

2.) Work. I'm trying to get my own company set up which also takes a bunch of time as you not only have paperwork, etc. to do, but you also can't say 'no' to new business. So that's eating up a good chunk of my time.

3.) Shadowbane. How come no one is playing this game? It's one of the best games to come to the Mac in a long time.

4.) MLB is back. The Red Sox play almost every day, and I have to watch them (no matter how painful it is).

The other thing to remember is that AI spikes up and down with traffic depending on the time of year. It will be interesting to see what happens this summer with WWDC in June and no MWNY.

Usually traffic would start increasing about now for WWDC and stay fairly constant through MWNY. People will come back, I think they just are tired of talking about the 970, the music service, the yet to be released iPod, and more importantly, the War.

But give it a month and the boards will be jumping again.

Some got better or more or busier work. Some (like I) never liked the flameside. I got bored, changed about everything in the life and now hang & mod casually elsewhere.

Yes, we should never have convictions. Much less, "fling" them.

Why do I get the feeling that if my "convictions" were more of the "no war" variety, that would sit well with you (because I'd see it your way?).

throughout late 2002 (when AI/MacNN front page links were a primary access point) there was frequently intelligent debate in many threads and most forums were full of engaging curiousity and reason. flame wars were primarily limited to FireSide Chat, which seemed to degenerate into childish name-calling and extremism, yet sometimes offered oddball opinions to ogle.

AI was offline for a while, then no-longer accessible from either front page, one of several times referred to in AI history threads as an "outage". after a few days of coming for a fix of discussion only to find your dealer gone from the corner, many users likely went elsewhere. it was probably a week or two later that i happened to search the corner more thoroughly and try a direct forums.appleinsider.com link, rather than my bookmarked AI frontpage. lo and behold, AI forums were up, but the population seemed sparse, as if many others had found another dealer and/or weren't yet finding their way back to the forums link. i suspect, some of those folks may not have returned.

some may have left over FSC (search the suggestions forum), the changeover from UBB to vB may have dropped a few who didn't re-reg, and there is certainly a seasonal frenzy of interest pre-Macworld which may not translate into activity during "down-time"

but i do admit to a similar opinion that AO has degenerated as FSC did, and a simple comparison of front page threads today vs last year (admittedly when FSC provided an outlet valve for much of the spleen that now has only AO for local release), an infrequent visitor might conclude that both the level of debate and the intelligence of the discussion have diminished

maybe war brings out the dark side. maybe we need a new fix of good stuff. maybe more attention should be paid to comedy and curiousity and less to criticism. maybe we need more coffee out in the sunshine.

there are still plenty of educational reads among the posts here, so i choose to stay and seek info, but less gibberish and more germane content would be nice

Good post, curiosburb! I agree with it completely. I think, after several solid days of vigorous back-and-forth about the war in AppleOutsider, I'll curtail some of my tendencies to pursue those and just participate in the funny, lighter AppleOutsider stuff (music, pop culture, non-war topics, etc.).

At this point, I think I've honestly said what I've wanted to (and I've heard all the other side's stuff as well). After a few days of volleying back and forth with the same 2, 3 or 4 people, it just gets to be a bit of a repetitive spiral, where you feel required to answer every point/sentence said about your previous post.

Fun and invigorating for a while, but once you've aired your side/views, it's cool to do other stuff. In other words, there's no way in hell I'm going to spend my weekend bickering with Shawn, bunge and others here about stuff we're obviously never going to agree on, no matter what. I've enjoyed this week, but I'm TIRED.

She never got married to that guy yet. Are they still dating? And J. Lo isn't war-related, so she's fair game.

I was dead-on about the Lisa Marie/Nicholas Cage marriage, so I still feel pretty confident that the J Lo/Affleck thing might wind up in divorce court by early/mid 2004 (if it goes that long).

My "social" threads are good! What are you talking about?

Still here. Posting a little more over at MaCNN these days - not much more, though. Like Fran I have to keep up with the Red Sox. Been surfing the blogs a lot lately too - never used to do that. And I'm waiting for the weather to break. I bought a new bike two weeks ago and it's been mostly cold, rain and even snow ever since. Thursday was nice but I had too much to do. Today it rained again. Maybe tomorrow.

No, I actually mean those as well . . . and believe me, I feel as innapropriate talking to you about my ideas, in such tragic times . . . . and there are lots of very sad stories happening and that have happened: a lot of people who are suddenly lonely, without family, missing there wives and kids, or brothers and sisters or husbands etc. . . . its a terrible thing to make merely 'another topic' out of . . . . but hey, Im not censoring, just thinking about it

I wish I could tell you it's because people are watching more hockey, but clearly people are more interested in the riveting days of baseball in April. Never have so many games mattered so little and yet garnered so much attention. Even when I was a baseball junky I never got why people felt compelled to pay attention in April and even May. By summer one should be ready to start paying attention in earnest but April?? Must be all the ESPN fantasy leagues.

Speaking of baseball, I'm hardly watching it this year. Just hasn't grabbed me, I guess. This time every year (since childhood), I get really excited and look forward to the games (either on TV or attending in real life).

I was flipping through the dial earlier this week and I felt no desire to stop and watch any of the games being shown.

The game hasn't changed. I haven't changed. At least not to such a degree. Maybe I just lost my passion for it over the years?

I have started here at AI about a month or two ago and like it a lot. I was pretty busy for the last past fw weeks and didn't get much in ( not that i have much anyway) but i overall i think there is a lot of people posting. Personaly I think that it is one of the best mac forum sites out there.
