Good things to come at MWSF

This is the first time and probably the last time I will ever write about whats on the horizon for Apple, but I thought I'd share a piece of vague info that I just got. I work in the an industry where it is commonplace to have to "sign your life away" when working with clients who don't want their products "being announced" before the announcement dates.

With that said, I recently spoke with someone who spoke with someone (who I cannot name for obvious reasons because they work for Apple) who told me that MWSF is gonna be awesome. He didn't tell me why, but he said "don't buy anything until then."

He also said that he finds it funny that most people don't realize that Apples' products are usually done months if not years ahead of their announcement dates. What just came out now on Aug. 13 was done almost a year ago. So whats coming out for MWSF is already done I guess.

I know thats vague, but in this case, I didn't have to sign my life away so I thought I'd share any valuable info. Cheers.

so damn general don't know what to think

gonna buy me a dual 867 regardless

i suspect ghz imac maybe ddr... ibook and powerbook should come before january i think. the powermac update would probably be after macworld SF cause apple doesn't really update their porducts every 4-5 months

    IT'S OVER!!!

come one we've been waiting for standout Hardware since the return of Steve Jobs. Maybe it's time to face reality. That reality is that the intense competition between Intel and AMD has placed them and their roadmap so far ahead of Apple that hoping for a MWSF Miracle is crazy.

Intel will be at .09 micron. AMD will be 64 Bit soon and has Hammer coming. The momentum is just too strong. Apple has Motorola...a company with more recent failures than success. It's a shame that you have to decide between good software or good hardware. Perhaps someday we'll have both...I just pray that it's from Apple.

it may be vague but i am a believer. i am going to wait. i too think they have got to have much more "up their sleeves" and the current update isn't offering me enough reason to upgrade. i guess it will help them with the switchers. i will keep my dual 533 and make it due until i see some major improvements. the current update isn't a major improvement in my mind and a little less then i expected. i should have known. i also heard from a friend that apple has something big in store for mwsf. i love the apple computer and software but just can't see upgrading and then apple updates the systems with all the goodies we all talk about. i hear it is going to happen at mwsf but apple has disappointed us before. I wish we could get some solid rumors.

Generally, hardware and software products are "done" months in advance. The last few months are called testing and they get "done" products done. Brooks long ago recommended that half of a (software) project's time be taken up with testing. New hardware development also takes alot of time for testing.

IF Apple has something big for MWSF, then I hope that they are well into integration testing by now, but to hint that Apple could release something whenever it feels like it is something of a misstatement. Apple will release something new when it is ready to do so (and readiness is not dependent on the technical capabilities of a system- it may be constrained by physical shortages of CPU's, components, etc.)

The only projects that don't work this way are deathmarch projects on noncritical systems (e.g. video games).

I shall now utter the inevitable, magic phrase. Please stand back...

Macs based on x86 to be released at MWSF

    Now I will run away.

    Run faster...

iMacs seem like the only thing needing a revision and other than that the portables should be updated sometime between Septemeber and november

I doubt powermacs will be annoucned in January seeing as though apple doesn't usually annouce a revision every 4-5 months

But don't these new power macs just seem like a stop-gap thing until the next big thing (P5)? 5 months is plenty of time to get it out and dominate Windows again!!!

The reality is that, no matter who is the leader now they wont lead forever. Where was nVidia 6 years ago? Or where was SGI 6 years ago? Did anyone ever expect AMD to produce a faster chip than Intel did? Did anyone really believe ATI will catch up or even surpass nVidia? Were you expecting Apple to ship a 23" TFT display 3 years ago? Who expected OS X to be such a nice piece of software a few years back?

So Intel has 2.5 ghz now and will have 3 in 2003. Big deal. I think that Apple is doing _a lot_ of things right lately, starting with software, trough customer care and idustrial design. And I bet they're not miracolously leaving the CPU department to God's will. It just takes longer to develop a new CPU+Architecture than to write a spiffy GUI or mold some plastic.

As much as I would like to see the G5 come out in Jan. there is one thing that bothers me. Apple obviously spent a lot of money designing these systems (along with the Xserve). Designing that controller chip could not have been easy or cheap. If it is only a stop-gap until Jan. it would seem like a waste. In some ways I think Apple expects to use it for some time. If the 7470 ever comes out with a DDR frontside bus, this controller is not needed.

It does occur to me that they may plan on using it in future iMacs. This would make some sense in that they could offer iMacs with DDR ram as a selling point. Or they might cotinue to sell Powermacs (at a lower price hopefully) and sell a G5 workstation.

Looks like our future rests in the hands of IBM. I'm optimistic...I'll be even moreso when IBM releases more info on Oct 15

My mistake then. I tought Intel was having some problems with manufacturing these.. But it might as well been a misinformed news blurb.

DON'T LISTEN TO HIM!!! Apple needs to keep it's products flowing to stay in business. Buy what you need, when you need it.

Realize there is a big holiday shopping season coming up soon. Apple will not disappoint! The iPod came out in October, just in time for the busiest buying time of the year. They would be stupid not to offer something new again this year.

What will it be; camera, tablet? Something nobody has even conceived of yet? Wait and see (just don't wait until January).

These do feel like a stopgap... the problem is in realizing that the gap is pretty freakin' big. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

The mobo supports RAM that the CPU can't keep up with.

The case has more fans and vents than the combined CPU(s), graphics card, and drives need... heck, they *plugged* the front vents after the fact. (What, you thought those were *decorative*?)

All of this points towards Apple looking past the current CPUs. Quite a bit past, actually.

The question is... what's the timeline before the next CPU hits?

Personally, I think we're going to see Motorola thrown over in favor of IBM RSN. The new case points towards a higher heat output chip with good bus throughput. Consider also that Apple's split bus design allows them, theoretically, to replace chunks of the mobo in situ, such as HyperTransport.

Again, the question is... how long will this migration take?

Oct 15th is going to be very interesting.

Hey guys, I know this is vague. Believe me, I wanted more info than this, but would you rather me not post what I heard? And to clarify, I think people should buy Macs when they need them. Apple does need to stay in business, so don't wait. Even with this info, I went and bought a Powerbook 667mhz DVI recently. I am not endorsing to wait until MWSF in any shape or form. I'm just giving the facts about what I heard.

    Cheers.

I know I shouldn't tell you this, but Microsoft is planning a big release for autumn 2003. DON'T buy anything from Microsoft, at least until autumn 2003.

I don't believe these hypes about the big expos. If they wanted to they could have shown us the new towers during MWNY. They didn't. I think this is because they want to be able to release products regardless of when the big shows are, and stop this "waiting for the next expo" disease. So that sales will be more even thorughout the year.
