What would make you upgrade your iBook?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
I own a 05.2001 600Mhz 12" iBook and was looking at the new 700Mhz/Radeon iBook and did not upgrade (yet?).

I'm asking myself where is my trigger threshold that will make me upgrade ...

Of course a dual CPU 1Ghz iBook with a Radeon 7500 for half the price of the present offering would ... but what do I really need

What I need is a powerful, but ultra-portable system that I can use as a full desktop replacement at home. So even the small screen and the nowadays measly resolution of 1024x768 are not really a problem. Of course a faster CPU won't hurt and a faster graphics card neither, but what really hurts is IMHO:

The Radeon does support much higher resilutions than the built-in screen. Why can I not just hook up a nice big screen and an external keyboard to my iBook when at home ... and still have a lean&mean package when on the go?

So to answer the original question:

A 800+ Mhz G3 (witch big cache 512K or more) and a Radeon 32MB (or Radeon 7500 32MB) that allows bigger reolution for external screens, that would make me buy a new iBook within seconds

He's asking about WHAT FUTURE HARDWARE WILL MAKE YOU UPGRADE YOUR IBOOK. You are worse than the mods.

This thread is all about proving that AI can correctly format html...

Very modern motherboard. Dual G4's at 1.5 GHz. AGP 8x. cost &lt; $2200.

What about an answer to the question ... ?

Of course as soon as a 800Mhz G3 Ibook with a Radeon 32MB is current I will upgrade and this thread will move to currenthardware <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

In any case, I'd like to see

    1. 1+ Ghz G3

    2. Slot-loading optical drive (or no optical drive at all)

    3. lighter weight

    4. 133+ Mhz bus

    before replacing my iBook/500/CD.

To answer your question (and thus making room for my disapproval of any forum-fascism - people who refuse to look at content because of external factors-)

    1) (choice of) other colors (but I have digressed on this topic in other threads)

    2) a processor that is notably faster, meaning: not a pathetic calculator-thingy next to the G4 in, e.g., the TiBook - for, I reckon, the low price of the iBook has to do with

    a: low expandibility (no pcmcia, 1 ram-slot)

b: little memory -especially cache, the real money-eater in computers)

c: outdated motherboard design (low bus speeds et al.)

By which I mean to say: I realise that in desiring too much of the iBook, you would just end up wanting a TiBook for the price of its small brother.

But alas, I do not think I would buy an iBook again. And, if you were wondering, I have a 600 Mhz, 14 incher from somewhere in 2002.

I don't have an iBook, but I would replace my G4 SuperDrive iMac (15" model) TOMORROW if I could get an iBook with the equal specs (800MHz G4, 60GB hard drive, same graphics - more or less -, etc.).

I'd even give up the SuperDrive and opt instead for a nice zippy Combo Drive. Slot-loading, of course.

Oh yeah, one more thing: I'd like it in the screen size/resolution of the first generation TiBook (widescreen 15" at 1152x768, or whatever it was).

With all the usual ports (Firewire, USB, video out, etc.).

Basically, TiBook guts in an iBook shell: TiBook power with iBook style/toughness.

I'd make that my sole Mac, both desktop and grab it and go when needed.

And of course, an AirPort set-up.

    Thank you! That's a compliment.

I don't have an iBook so i'm cheatin' here but I'd jump for one with a G4.

    800+ MHz G4 and a 4xAGP graphiccard with 32Mb VRAM.

nope. to overclock a 500 MHz iBook, you have to break open the case, take it apart to find the mobo, and solder a couple of circuits.

I've got the same 15" iMac and sometimes regret I didn't get a laptop instead.

I agree, I'd trade it in for a similarly equipped iBook, but you left one key factor out...true video spanning.

This mirrorring crap is so useless. How many people out there actually use it?

    i am sold if:

    Bluetooth built in

processor closer to 1GHz on 133 bus

    small widescreen

    better battery life

    sweetner but not necessary:

    (i still want this though)

    512 cache

    slot load

a trackpad that doubles as a tablet for Inkwell

    video spanning.

anything after that is a gift.

There is definitely a difference between "What are the new iBook specs going to be?" and "What would make you upgrade your iBook" (Dream Machine)?

Personally, I think you guys have very high hopes if you expect any of these machines in the next 2 years.

Let's get up to a G4 in the iBook before we start talking about 15" Widescreens, 1 GHz+, 32-64 MB of Graphics memory, etc. Plus, remember Apple also has a computer called the PowerBook that already almost matches up.

For all those of you cussin' the 750FX G3, it is actually fairly speedy: all it is missing is Altivec (and a few FSB MHz). 512KB of full speed on die cache is quite nice .

Could IBM add VMX to the 750* G3s? Probably.

Could IBM up the FSB (see Gamecube's Gecko)? Probably.

However technically possible these additions are, the iBook cannot overtake the PowerBook, in MHz, actual speed or features. For the iBook to get a G4, the Powerbook needs a G5 (or a significantly faster "G4++").

I'd like to see a 12.1" TiBook. A return to 10 hour battery life would be great.

Where can I get the CHUD tools?

Just having this thread in the thread list makes the whole future hardware page look retarded.

Fix it, prease &lt;-- sorry, I've just spent a whole day aclimatizing Japanese ESL students.

A return to 5 hours would be nice.

It seems like i get almost 3 or so now.

    That bites!

But yes, battery life would get me to get a new one.

No measly 10 hours, either (which would be, what, 6 IRL?)

    I want 16 hours.

They need to improve battery technology, or put a little hydrogen engine in there, or something.
