Talked the Girl into buying one, now if I could just stretch the credit card to get the combo...... sigh Still how useful is a 12" screen for watching DVD's? And I have a 48x CDRW already, I cant wait to get rid of my damn PC. Looks like I'm becoming a Murbot... This will be computer number 4 in 12 months....
Heh, at least they didn't plaster the new iBooks across the front page. Just one of the small boxes, better fit. Decent update to keep the value, wonder how long this rev will last though.
I guess my grumbles may be a little unreasonable now as I am having to stare down the barrel of another Apple purchase
I knew I should have bought AppleCare: let this be a lesson to all you out there with new machines.
Retrograde: I feel your pain. It cost me $300 to replace a pinched backlight cable on my out-of-warranty iBook/500/CD. I'll definitely buy AppleCare on my next Apple portable. Looking at the $300 repair, I was temped just to buy a new low-end iBook (I have an external FireWire 16x CD-RW). Today's upgrade would have made a new $999 iBook even more tempting. But I want to return to the PowerBook fold and I am determined to wait for a Rev.B 12-inch PowerBook (hopefully with 1+GHz processor, 1+GB RAM, and DVI-out).
I think that they are pretty cool, but does anyone know or think how they will compare to the 12 in pb and the 15 in pb? Will the G4's still be faster? Or will this new ibook beet the 12 in out with its level 3 cache?
I don't know, Apple have always taken the piss mightily on Ram, it's embarassing the rip-off they perpetuate. On a lighter note the missus and i saw Macca's gig last night, £160 very well spent indeed. In the last year I've seen B. Wilson and a Beatle on top form, money is good, money is our friend.
How do you know? Does it say that somewhere on the spec sheet?
And I just noticed... all the new X-only machines have 256 MB of RAM or more, including the low end iMac. I suppose they have to start shipping enough RAM to work with the OS, and until now they only shipped enough to work with OS 9 even though they wanted everyone to use OS X.
no bluetooth is a big step back.... do they want this to become a standard or not?! ApE I can understand because that requires a big redesign... BT is fairly simple to implement...
You'll see Bluetooth and Airport Extreme once the iBook no longer boots into OS 9.
Apple is still using the old board because the iBook is a prime educational machine, and education will probably be the slowest adopter of OS X. Once Apple feels comfortable offering an OS X-only iBook, you'll see the feature set take a leap forward.
PS, I still hold that IMHO Panther will NOT support ANY G3s. (including these latest iBooks)
FWIW, you have my condolenceses if you buy one now...
What are you smoking man? How can apple not support the G3 in their next OS? They still sell the G3 and probable will for at least another 6 months, so I think panther will have to support the G3. If Apple doesn't they will be asking for a law suit from some trial lawyer. Then Apple will be forced into supporting the G3 in Panther. Believe me it will be supported. Gosh!

It seems this is part of the deal struck with distributors. Instead of lowering the price distributors can offer Macs with free RAM upgrades. If you look around you can probably find the iBook with and additional 256MB for free and maybe an inkjet printer thrown in as well.
I think he was referring to the PowerBooks collectively, as in the current 867-1000MHz range is ahead of the 800-900MHz range. Rather than the iBook being, say, 800-1000...somewhat like the time when we had the 800MHz G4 iMac and Dual 800MHz G4 PowerMac.

Escher
Doesn't Apple understand that this will give many first time users (who don't know well enough to buy extra RAM) the impression that Macs are sloooow?
You mean their not
Grr.

Ups.. made a mistake. They all don't boot into OS 9 no longer...
The iBook boots up in Mac OS X, which includes the Classic environment.

The iBook is clocked higher than the Powerbook 12".
