M4 MacBook Pro upgrade could arrive by end of 2024

Apple could be planning to update the MacBook Pro lineup to M4 chips before the end of 2024, based on OLED screen production timetables.

A MacBook Pro with M4 could be on the horizon.

Apple has so far only included the M4 chip in one product, with the iPad Pro range the sole users of the newest Apple Silicon. If an analyst is right, there will be MacBook Prio models using it too.

In a tweet to subscribers on Tuesday, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants said that his recent supply chain checks show there will be new MacBook Pro updates on the way. Displays destined for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro will allegedly start in the third quarter of 2024.

If correct, this should mean that a launch could happen in the fourth quarter of 2024, in time for the holiday season.

Young's claims correlate with those of Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who said in April that M4 MacBook Pro models have a slim chance of a late 2024 release, and may get pushed to early 2025 instead.

In terms of leaking, Young is regarded as one of the more accurate analysts. Regularly referring to the display supply chain, the specialism has resulted in numerous previous claims that came out to be correct.

The MacBook Pro isn't the only thing to expect updates to M4 this year. It's also believed the 24-inch iMac will do so as well, along with a low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Gurman thinks that a Mac mini in M4 and M4 Pro varieties could be on the way, between the end of 2024 and early 2025. However, updates to the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro will be more 2025 updates.

Rumor Score: Possible

I would be very surprised if Apple didn't release an M4 based MacBook Pro in the fall with the new M4 Pro, and M4 Ultra chips.

M4 chip on 13” pro is amazingly responsive and fast.

Seems like upgrading to the M4Pro and M4Max will already be a significant upgrade this fall.  Really don’t need the OLED screen yet, save that for the fall of 2025 and the M5 processors.  I imagine if the AI in the M4Pro/max is significantly better than the M3 there will be huge demand for them.    I really love the miniLED screen on my 14” MacBook Pro.

That was my thought, too. "Based on OLED screen production timetables." The big news from this seems to be it implies the M4 MacBook Pros will have OLED, and this is the first I'm hearing of that. If so, that's HUGE news. Appleinsider should clarify.

Gosh just shut up and take my money. M1Max here and it is amazing, but my arm could be twisted to get the M4. I had initially targeted upgrade by M6.

The news that OLED may be coming for the MacBook may shave some of the weight off the 16" MacBook Pro?

I'm thinking that Apple will work hard to get their entire product line on the M4 series as quickly as possible. So by next spring I'd be very surprised if their entire Mac lineup isn't on the M4 series.

It would be awesome if Apple could have one of those special announcements in August 2024 just in time for the back to school buying season.

    Probably in the fall.

Should get Studio and Pro this Summer.

I think the timing is looking good for a new large iMac in 2026 if not next year with things lining up:

    1) the rumblings of Apple possibly going thin again.
    2) 2nm chips - would allow for the Ultra in a large iMac even if it’s thin.

But for the m4 generation, a Pro and Studio this summer and thinner devices like small iMac or MBP in the fall. I’m guessing MBP with iMac waiting until early next year.

The recent launches of MacBook Air M3 and iPad Air M2 indicate that things are complicated. M4 is less expensive and the first designed for AI. It should be easy to upgrade mini, iMac, MBA to M4. But if iPhone 16/16 Pro/SE 4th are all going to use N3E from TSMC then production capacity might not be available for anything but iPad Pro.

Last year Apple kept iPhone 15 (non Pro)/14/13/12/SE 3rd gen on 5nm. Most of these models will get discontinued due to a lack of USB-C. This could move the bulk of iPhone production to N3E and delay Mac updates. Agree with those saying OLED won't happen this year. 2nm is 2,5 years after 3nm indicating mid 2026 for "M6". Apple will need to offer upgrades in 2025 and OLED would be it.

If this supposed M4 Extreme is coming out I'd guess it won't be out until next year once the capacity is better. I do think they need to update both the Mac Studio and Mac Pro ASAP though. They're a shit Mac right now at not worth the money.

I’m afraid that M4 is obsolete already now.

Is  it just me or does upgrading from a previous M generation Mac seems less and less worth it? Like the difference in performance from M3 to M4 is not justifiable enough to buy the newer one

M4 is on the more efficient process with good yields.

Apple will have already been stockpiling Pro, Max, and Ultra chipsets and shipping to assembly. Extreme series will likely be very niche and won’t require the same kind of numbers the Pro/Max/Ultra series will.

But it does make sense that Apple speed this along. The top QC SD chipsets are nipping at their heels (in a disingenuous way, sure, but still swaying the mass market) and Microsoft is flat out copying their lsptop hardware designs, so a thinner notebook lineup and faster push to M4 does make sense.

This is probably the most ignorant statement I've read on the internet today.

You mean like the Qualcomm Snapdragon?

www.notebookcheck.net/... (A review done with ruthless German efficiency)

The M4 SOC is even more frugal/faster at peak performance when compared to their competition and the A18 will be no different.
