'Iceland' and 'Greenland' were so named to disguise their true nature - to encourage people to go to Greenland which isn't very green, and discourage them from going to Iceland which, by comparison, isn't very icy.

This isn't entirely true, GPRS and UMTS is ways of delivering information and Wap is the application on top of the infrastructure. Think of it as ADSL and HTML. When you are using GPRS you still access WAP but not over the conventional GSM which is pay per minute. GPRS can be pay per meg or monthly fee.
As for the Iceland naming isse: The Vikings named the new places they discovered after their first impressions. Not to disguise anything. Take for example Iceland, the first place that they discovered on Iceland was Reykavik. Reykavik means foggy/smoky bay (more like a pointy bay but I don't know what you'd call those in English) in ancientnordic which is the language that Swedish (which I speak) developed from. And Reykavik most certainly isn't smoky most of the time. They called America Wineland (Vinland) since they found grapes there. All of these examples are names that describes the places, not disguising them. So is Gårdarike, Blåland, Normandie and so on. Southern parts of Greenland is rather green in summer due to the long hours with sun. But maybe Apple engineers don't know?
Slightly more on topic:
Apple will not make a phone in the forseeable future because of their strong relation with SonyEricsson. SonyEricsson buy the platforms they use in their phones from Ericsson Mobile Platforms (EMP) (and so does LG, JVC, Benefon and others). If Apple where to make the software for a phone they would have to work with EMP and not with SonyEricsson, effectively competing with SonyEricsson, which is't bloody likely after MWNY.
EMP is selling the hardware for other companies phones, letting every company who would want to, easily make a phone with their own touch on it but which builds on Ericssons reliable hardware.
Nokia is now licensing their Software, in the same way that Microsoft does. Their vision is that whatever phonebrand you buy, they will make profit from it due to the licensed software. Samsung for example will use Nokia's OS in the future.
I hope I cleared some things out in the EMP/SonyEricsson/Apple relations. And I hope that you actully remember this, it's a complex situation but the conclusion is that Apple cannot make a phone without collaborating with EMP and they cannot collaborate with EMP due to their relation with SonyEricsson.

Just to add to the naming speculation and its connection with Iceland, Iceland has the highest usage per capita of mobile phones in the world. Just a thought...

Actually, my guess is that they saw the change of name to ".Mac" in Jaguar builds and took an educated guess at what it meant.
It's not quite true that Viking named new places according to their first impressions of them. And Normandie is definitely a bad example (unless the first person they met there was someone from Scandinavia!).
Reading the sources that first indicate the use of Island and Grønland, it seems clear that the names were at least USED as part of a PR exercise, to get people up there and colonize the new areas. Whether the names might initially have been spoken as a reaction to the first impressions, cannot be established.
Could it be that Iceland is used to indicate that this concept bridges the mobile phone situations in the States and Europe, respectively? Iceland WAS a kind of stepping stone for the attempts to reach Vineland.
Of course, this theory is not really supported by the strategic and market reality arguments, as shown above - very valid ones, too.
Oh - and Apple desperately needs a built-in program for voice- and video communications. It's hard to see why they don't make it - most of the coding is already there, in QT. Surely SpyMac is not correct in the report that Apple has changed its opinion about enhancing iChat with these functions?
