European Union evaluating if Corning monopolizes the smartphone screen market

The European Union is investigating Corning over concerns that the company might misuse its dominant position in the global market for alkali-aluminosilicate glass, commonly used in smartphone screens.

If you own a smartphone, chances are, the glass used to make the screen came from Corning. In 2016, the New York-based company held an impressive 73% share of the smartphone screen market, largely thanks to Gorilla Glass. Currently, Corning provides 40% of the glass for the entire display market, which includes smartphones, tablets, laptop screens, wearables, and more.

Apple's own Ceramic Shield, which has been used on iPhone models since the iPhone 12, was developed by Corning, too.

It is because of this market saturation that the company has landed itself in hot water with European regulators. The European Commission has expressed concerns regarding Corning's alleged distortion of competition through exclusive supply agreements with smartphone manufacturers and entities involved in raw glass processing.

Allegedly, Corning has put exclusivity agreements in place that require smartphone manufacturers to source nearly all of their alkali-aluminosilicate glass from Corning. Additionally, Corning offers rebates to companies that comply with the exclusivity contracts.

It also appears that Corning has placed similar exclusivity agreements and imposed no-challenge clauses into its contracts with companies that process raw glass.

As a result, the European Commission will conduct an in-depth investigation into Corning's actions. Corning is allowed to submit comments to address the Commission's concerns.

Corning receives hefty funding from companies like Apple. In fact, in 2021, Apple awarded the glass maker $45 million from the Advanced Manufacturing Fund to expand the company and its R&D.

EU will go after anything that tries to abuse its market position.

It is in fact their fucking JOB to investigate when it looks like there might be a problem. That's what they're paid to do.

"Investigation" does not mean that there IS a problem, btw.

The Trump Administration will not allow the American companies EU bullying to go on any longer. You can bank on that. He already spoke with Tim about how once elected that is not going to happen anymore.

If they have the best product then why do they need the exclusivity deals?

Seems like Microsoft has the exclusivity with Intel. All the Intel boxes came with DOS or Windows in the day....

Do think the US should go after European companies that abuse their positions?  How about Veritas who produces almost all wind generators in the US?  How about Pfizer and the other European pharmaceutical companies?  Trump likes the apply a little tit for tat.  I personally think Europe abuses their position much more than Apple.  Be careful what you wish for (Gen Colin Powell).

Oh, please. It's called a good business decision. If customers don't want your product they won't sign them.
Who is the European glass producer pushing this agenda anyway?

If I were Apple, I'd stop all shipments to the EU for a period of 1 month as a protest to their 'uppity' ways.
That ought to stop it all in it's tracks.  If not; repeat.  Certainly Apple can afford to do so.

Then you don't need exclusivity agreements in place that require smartphone manufacturers to source their glass from Corning.

If you can't see the difference...

Best or not is not the issue here.

It's about abusing dominant position and harming competition, which in turn stifles innovation.

Well then, if they just have the best product, and everybody's using them just because of that and paying exactly what their products are worth, then THEY HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

    Good!

The EU needs a clear message to not fuck with American companies.
Right now, it's American companies getting a very clear message not to fuck with European customers.

Since when is the EU the global dictator for how things are made and what is sold? If you don't like it, don't buy it. I need to investigate whether I actually buy any products manufactured in EU companies. I don't buy European vehicles, don't buy European wine (CA and other USA states make fine wine), don't buy EU made bikes, don't buy any cosmetics from any country, don't buy any knives either, in fact I found a website that showed several country's products and I don't believe I ever bought any of their products.

You’re not actually arguing that the EU is not the „dictator for how things are made and what is sold“ IN THE EU?

I mean…you might be, but WTF?
