Suddenly the rumored price of $2.2K for the iPhone with foldable screen coming in 2026 is starting to look like a good-value bargain compared to a $1.6K for the iPhone 17 pro Max.
If his lips are moving he’s lying everyday is a new low in someway, and tariffs are paid by the citizen, the taxpayer it’s not paid by Canada. It’s not paid by Mexico or China or any other country outside of the United States it’s paid for by the taxpayer who will have the tax added on to whatever product they are buying in the USA companies are not charities they are basically clearinghouses no different than old Hudson Bay trading company or the East India company. Whom never paid a tax in their existence they passed the cost on to the customers at the end of the chain, so much winning…..
Once again the United States citizen ie.. The Taxpayer at the end of the line will pay the tariff which will be passed on to them in the form of higher prices. There is no putting one over on China, Canada, or Mexico or any other foreign country It’s the reverse MAGA believers/followers.
And last the other countries will just trade among themselves with no tariff also many goods that used to have transit points on the way to other countries will now go around the United States ie the port of Seattle will start to lose business to the port of Vancouver instead of going through Seattle and trucking into Canada you will just reroute to Vancouver.
Now you really know how those Trump casinos went bankrupt.
Looking at futures right now tomorrow (April 3) looks like a world class sh!t storm. In fact, safety locks might be triggered. You know, the ones when the stock market drops too much during one trading session. Right now, tomorrow might be one of those historic days.
America wanted change. Well, tomorrow they will get it. Enjoy the ride.
Apple will survive. But Joe Average American is going to feel it to the core. Too bad.
Forgivably, this report and subsequent discussion has been totally US-oriented. Apple is a truly global multi-national with US sales a minority. I cannot imagine that Trump's authoritarian decrees will much influence Apple's business model - they will just make Apple products more expensive in the US. It will be interesting to see if US citizens obtain passports and travel overseas to buy cheaper Apple products.
As has been pointed out, isolationism has been tried before and resulted in recession. History is repeating. Let it all play out and current voters never make the same mistake in their lifetimes. The best way of learning is from experience of one's mistakes.

Apple can always start supporting Caliexit on the side. Which would free them and a big chunk of Americans from this mess.
Uninhabited islands hit by 29%. Those penguins and seals are so mean and unfair to U.S. workers.
Taiwan - not recognized by U.S. as a nation - got a tariff on their own. China is furious and U.S. products could become socially unacceptable. Hard to beat China on nationalism.
Israel got hit by 17%. Probably a bit unexpected to see Israel as an enemy to the U.S.

We will have to see where this takes us.
Maybe Israel will start adding a tariff on those 2000# bombs we've been providing?
You’re welcome to visit EU to buy your Apple stuff. No tariffs here since everything Apple comes from China or India and sold through the Irish Apple entity.

I've hosted many people from other countries. Most of them would buy consumer electronics before going back home because it was cheaper. That's probably no longer the case.

Yeah, it always amazed me that my SE Asian colleagues would repatriate goods that were made in SE Asia back home from US stores - at considerable savings. When they'd come over they'd often bring an empty suitcase or buy one here to bring their purchases back nearer to where they were made. There must have been limits and duties on the other end but they must not have been too bad because the first place they'd want to visit while in the US were the outlet malls. The biggest attractions were clothing and Apple stuff.
Maybe Apple could decontent the versions of their products sold in the United States and continue business as usual everywhere else. Also, their profit margin is such that a bit of decontenting combined with a hit to those margins in the US market might just do the trick. Whatever taxes the US government collects off of Apple, it will be less considering those lower profit margins. So some of that fabulous tariff income Trump and the Gang are counting on will be eaten away by that development. In addition, if inflation is one of the side effects of waging a tariff war, buying power will be diminished. That also means less money in government coffers. Trump simplifies enormously and in terms of gaining votes, that's effective. Yet if you oversimplify that which is exceedingly complex when governing, bad things happen. When running for office, Trump pushed the notion that if he were elected, life would go back to where it was pre-COVID. He has always claimed to love tariffs but he didn't run on the notion of using them to thoroughly remake the global economy and expecting initial pain in the process. He didn't because clearly not enough voters would have endorsed that approach. Folks just wanted it to go back to where it was in the earlier years of Trump's first term. He suggested this is what they'd get. Now he's pulled off something of a bait and switch. I suspect he has such faith in his ability to sell voters on whatever he wants to do, that he thinks they will stick with him. Some will but many will not. They've been had and some of them will clue in, especially, when there is direct impact on their lives. If what Trump has in mind is something akin to, impose tariffs, production returns to the US, badda bing, badda boom, this is going to be an epic fail. Is he capable of such massive mismanagement? Absolutely. He has the bankruptcies and mismanaged projects in his past to suggest he could blow it. He's not Midas even though some foolishly imagine him to be. He's brilliant at marketing himself. That doesn't mean he's brilliant at pulling off the major restructuring he apparently has embarked on. Nor was he elected with a clear mandate to embark on such a path. He would have had to run on doing that and he definitely did not. In any case, Apple is better positioned to manage this mess than some others like, for instance, the auto industry. The biggest issue for Apple will be making money during a recession which we surely are headed for.

If Trump really sticks to this it will end up being one of the largest and most regressive tax increases in history. It will feel very much like a big sales tax hike to most people.
I kind of hope he does stick with it — the people who voted for this should experience the consequences of their vote.
Except that everyone suffers as a result.
Yes, but Trump was going to do his best to make people in blue states suffer anyway. Now he's hurting his own voters. That's a nice surprise.
Are you really surprised?
Yes, at least sort of. He's very erratic. It's hard to predict with confidence what he will do. In his first term he talked a ton about building a wall. He built some wall segments, but never really swung for the fences on wall building. He's swinging for the fences now on tariffs in a way that goes beyond what I had expected. He might still get cold feet and reverse course. But I hope he just straps himself in, doubles down, and goes for broke. And ends up with 67 Democratic senators who convict him after this third impeachment.

But you know which country was exempted from Trump tariffs? Mr. Putin's Russia. That was nice of us.
