Bungie's 'Myth' resurrected by fans for modern Mac gamers
An old Bungie favorite has been remastered by fans, with "Myth" now using a new upscaled way to play the franchise on the modern Mac.

The Myth series was Bungie's real time fantasy tactics game, which ran from 1997 to 2001 and was available on macOS and Windows. While the series isn't actively being developed by Bungie itself, and ownership of the intellectual property is in question, the franchise is still being worked on by a devoted group of fans.
The April 20 release of Myth: Twice Born Edition is a remaster of titles under the franchise, including the original Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter, up to the "Chimera" expansion pack. The remaster includes upgrades to every display asset, either remastered from the original assets, upscaled from the original sprites, or recreated in the same artistic style.
The remaster was started based on the work of Project Magma, a collection of map makers for the game that evolved into a community of developers and artists who continued to keep the game alive.
After creating the Magma Detailed Texture Megapack, which updated almost 400 maps for the game and its mods, there was an apparent visual disconnect between the improved maps and the lower-quality graphics of the rest of the game. The remaster refines everything else in the game so it is more cohesive overall.
This apparently took over 15 years to produce, with assets remade by hand using old 3D software and pixel-level editing.
While a community project, it's not an officially-sanctioned one at the time of publication, despite deemed abandonware. PC Gamer adds that it was to be released via Nightdive at one point in its development, but rights owners Take 2 were not keen on that happening, resulting in the free release.
However, given Bungie's community-forward approach, as well as seeming support from original Bungie members and its free release, the remaster should exist perfectly fine.
The remaster is compatible with Apple Silicon Intel, and PowerPC. However, you will still require a copy of Myth 2 in order to run it. But, that's not hard to find.
And if you're still adoring your PowerPC, there are updated versions for that too -- just don't expect to use the HD graphics.
