Perhaps the low end iMac is doing poorly. I recently read that the 17 iMac was so hot that there was a waiting list to get them. We just bought one for my wife and are waiting ten days for delivery.

That was my impression. 15" iMac sales have stalled, but 17" iMacs sales are relatively strong.
This would explain the rumors floating around in axing the 15" model in MWSF, and introducing a new 19" model. Personally, that sounds a bit crazy to me (a 19" screen on that little hemisphere??) but there you have it.
In any case, it's likely we'll either see discontinuation or a reduction in price for 15" iMac soon.
Until a revolutionary truly new chip (G5) or a radicaly improved manufacturing of the G4 (90nM) shows up, the upcoming refreshes of the power macs will be less exiting than the last one
So 0.867-1.0-1.25 will be replaced with 1.0-1.25-1.5 and front mounted FW port for the iPOD and video camera, exciting is it not
The iMac is not overpriced, JD just doesn't have the money to buy one.
As a matter of fact, PC sales are way down all around - unless you want a Dell or Gateway low-end machine.
The bubble has burst on the home computer market for now. People upgraded a few years ago and are making do with their older machines. The infantile thinking that you must have the lastest and greatest is going away as the business matures. Someday even some of the immature Apple fans will see this.
The iMacs are a superb piece of kit, and compare well for their specifications. Most PC's do not include DVD burners or the software to author them.
The 17" is so good that I can see little market for the 15", so it is hardly suprising that sales have stalled.
I accept that iMacs have a speed problem in that they will be difficult to upgrade until the Powermacs move up, although now that the PM's are all DP.... I wouldn't be supprised to see the bus rise to 133mhz and a 931mhz processor imerge.
19" imac??? Isnt imac supposed to be the cheap mac alternative? The 17" isnt very cheap and I can imagin what a 19" imac would cost.

Not any more. That place of distinction has moved instead to the eMac. Or a classic iMac, I guess, if you're really cash-strapped and don't like G4 chips.
iMac has moved somewhere in-between the original iMac and the (remember this one?) Cube.
I'm sorely tempted by a 17" iMac, btw. It's a lovely computer.
It was already announced that Steve is going to do the Keynote speech. I know it is pretty obvious that he would do it but it seems early that it was announced. Usually they wait until a couple weeks before the show. It could mean something big is planned.
Or it could just mean that Steve used iCal and realized he had some free time that day!

And he probably sync it to his ipod and .mac account in all his desktops and portables
Hopefully he put down this on the to do list: Announce $200 price drops on all imac models!!
The New Office-macv ppromotion runs out on 7th January, the day of the keynote I think. That timing is not a co-incidence and so I guess that is when we will see any new hardware. It looks as though we are not going to get anything new until MWSF.
I hope we do see an MPC7470 or whatever it is called if the Power4 deriitive is not ready and a good speed jump for the iMacs. Give me a snappy GUI and I will be happy. Give me a P4-derivitive and I will be exstatic.
Apple will continue to use MacWorld as a show case for it products and software, But apple will limit the amount of new hardware because they do not want to hurt sales by people holding off buying new hardware. Steve will only announce one update to a hardware and that will usually be a consumer model like iBook or iMac
3rd party developers that Apple will rip off in the next 6 months. (cough cough Watson)
Will demo a really cool game with an all new Graphics Card from nVidia only to have Microsoft buy the maker of the game 4 months later and then 2 years later still no sign of the game on Mac.
Phil Schiller will come out with his blue Apple shirt that hasn't been washed in two years ( his lucky keynote shirt )
Steve will throw an iPod at someone in the first five rows that keeps yelling: "F*CK Motorola!"
Jonathan Rubenstein will come on stage and do a PC vs. Mac bake off but in regards to hardware design and not speed. They will call it the "Hardware Design Myth: Why design matters more than speed"
Then Jobs will have one more thing: This year instead of playing Love Shack he got the B52's to actually come on stage and play it for you!
then again, i might be a little sad b/c i have been saving up for a new power mac for a year and a half (even though i don't NEED one) and have been waiting to be wowed by a company that is supposed to make "insanely great" products.

I wouldn't expect anything groundbreaking
they have just about max'd out.
I see a dim holiday buying season, and a lot of money wasted on this "Switch" ad campaign.
a lot of hype that far outweighs the actual result.
Apple drains all the exitement out of us by updating so slowly,
Funny how that is the same prediction many were making for the last MWSF and also for MWNY.
What to expect at MWSF? Disappointment.
Sad but probably true.
The MWSF/MWNY cycle is dead.
If this is not a sign that people were hugely disappointed this year...

Oh, ok. You're right, the iMac is a bargain.

I do not think this is a nonsensical suggestion at all. But do you have some more flesh on that, Leonis?

I was just joking
You never know
Possible digital device.
