Fake. Look at the coorners of the screen, they aren't even consistent. One of the is curved, the others are squarish or just weird. It's just an iPod that's been hacked about in Photoshop. You can even spot some repeating patterns in the metal edge at the bottom from the cloning tool.

first: never believe a junior member.

second: I would say that the curves of the screen are correct, but that they look wierd from that angle.

third: where are those repeatings ? I can't see them. and why should he repeat the metal ? the iPod has metal there, so why repeat it?

fourth: did you also see the reflections of the metal and the transparency on the corners ?

Anyway we don't even know the scale of that? 3 inch or 12? It's look like it's magnified, and it's dam ugly! And there's not even something telling us it could be an Apple PowerPod or the futur Inspector Gadget artificial spam detector...

I have done some careful looking, and I am going to go out on a limb here....

I think this might be a real photograph, of what, I do not know, if it will ever be seen, I do not know, etc. This could also be a real photograph of a bogus thingamajig.

However, if you look carefully with rulers in photoshop, there is distortion from the lens (curvature) in the straight lines. This distortion comes from using a cheap camera or even a good camera on which the lens is not perfect (and it rarely is: even on real SLRs). I photograph (both digitally and traditionally) all sorts of square & rectangular objects, and this distortion is apparent at the edges of photographs unless one is very careful.

This is not the kind of thing one usually sees in fakes, either. they are all just a little too perfect--even when the old "graininess" trick is used.

So, as I said, this, I think, might be a real photograph, but of what, I have no idea.

There is only one problem that I see with this, however, is that the light source might not be consistent: the shadow from the thingamajig is toward the top left, but the shadow from on the screen goes toward the bottom right. This could be a LCD thing though. I am not sure. However, when I look at my  iPod in the same lighting situation, I do see such a line, caused by the housing of the screen.

I am still skeptical, but there are a couple of things about this photo that make me want to believe. And a couple of things that even an enterprising faker probably wouldn't think of.

If you look at the right side of the object, you can see what looks like port shadows on the edge of the plastic. You see the same "shadows" on the iPod in the plastic when viewed at the same kind of angle.

They look alot like the firewire and audio out on an iPod.

    Any ideas.

I agree. I just looked at mine and saw the same exact "shadows" or more accurately, reflections in the exact same positions.

You know what, I've looked at this image in detail in Photoshop and I'm convinced that it's either a photo of a real thing or definitely the best fake I've ever seen. What did it for me is the very faint reflection from the plastic cover that you can see on the table (or ground or whatever) along the bottom right of the image. I didn't notice it at first, but as i was playing with photoshop curves, it sort of jumped out at me. Then the other reflections jumped out - along the top left corner and the bottom left.

As well, the image is indeed distorted enough to suggest it was taken at close range, with a cheap flash and a cheap, probably digital camera.

Again, the shadows are consistent and the flare from the cheap flash diminishes evenly - it's not a photoshop effect, that's for sure.

And finally, try as i might, I can't find any evidence of cloning or touching up. In other words, this image really does NOT appear to have been doctored, and if it is, it was done by a very serious and talented professional.

But like everyone else, I don't know what it is. Looks a lot like an ipod with a full colour screen. Who knows... guess we'll find out soon enough.

    most likely?

somebody had a dead iPod. they took the front, white face off, and then you have the insides there. stick something black inside, snap a photo and away you go.

i had a Palm pilot that died a few years ago, no screws or anything. turns out if you heat it with a hairdryer though, you can open it up and take the two plates apart. iPod probably uses something similar.

it's just the metal half of the iPod, with something placed in the inside of the shell to cover the internal components.

nah, you can't just take the white front of like that, look here for reference: how to disassemble an iPod

Uh, cow always means female when discussing cattle, just as steer always means male when discussing cattle. It's 'cattle' which is gender ambiguous...

Just to clear this up because hate when people make absolute statements that are obviously false:

    Wester's Dictionary defines cow as:

    1: female of cattle

2: a domestic bovine animal regardless of sex or age

So while it is more common for cow to mean "female of cattle" it is obviously not "always" as stated so by JohnsonWax. I know this is gay but damn, I hate when people state absolutes like know it alls in the face of obvious evidence to the contrary.

if so how do you explain the lack of a hole in the plexiglass cover?

Whatever this is it is definitely a very interesting guessing game to figure out how it was faked, if so.

One might wonder at the fact that we all are puzzling (as are they at the spymac boards which I checked out to see what they thought) HOW this was faked. Most of the time that is the no-brainer.
